In their latest attempt to make a live-action G.I. Joe movie, Paramount banked heavily one an origin story for one of the most popular characters with Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. Blu-ray & 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Release Guide - August 15 - August 21, 2021Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 13 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming out this week on 4K disc and Blu-ray, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray/Digital Releases- After no releases last week (except for last minute import additions to the calendar) we return back to a normal flow. New title first, this week look for Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, available as a standard edition release and as a (somewhat yuck) Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. You might like the cover or agree with me, to me I am scratching my head as I try to figure out what I am even looking at. Because the original movie (The Hitman's Bodyguard) did not get a SteelBook release, Best Buy has remedied that this week as well. The cover is a bit more traditional comic book style. From Sony, Labyrinth is getting another release. This release has Dolby Vision HDR and is presented as a Digibook. I hope studios don't think we will regularly double-dip to upgrade the HDR. If you didn't buy the first release or are a fan of the movie, now might be the time. SteelBooks seem to be dominating a lot of 4K releases lately, this time around, the first movie in the Wizarding World Collection, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone but with a more traditional cover art and at the moment, this release is the only way to experience the 'Magical Movie Mode' in 4K. Early specs indicated the audio track might be different as well, stay tuned for more info. For an import Friday release, Lord of War as a SteelBook release, from Germany, just in case the standard domestic release isn't quite cutting it for you. HD Blu-ray/Digital releases- A rather slow(ish) week for Blu-ray releases, but there always seems to be something of interest for all. Getting it out of the way early, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard gets a blu-ray/dvd combo release. Also from LionsGate this week, 2021 action/thriller Rogue Hostage. Under the Vestron Video Label, Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat debuts on blu-ray this week. Also getting another out of the way early, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Magical Movie Mode Edition) gets a blu-ray release. From The Warner Archive, In the Good Old Summertime as well as Shadow of the Thin Man. Sony's archive/mod label brings us Bingo, Care Bears Movie II: A New Generation and The Truffle Hunters. Does this mean the original Care Bears movie is in the works somewhere? Kino Lorber has a lot of well known star power classic releases this week, titles include The Emperor Waltz, Fitzwilly and The Fortune Cookie. In case you're keeping score, Bing Crosby, Dick Van Dyke, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Criterion Collection's single title this week is Original Cast Album: "Company", described as 'the holy grail' of Broadway documentaries. Anime highlight(s) of the week, DECA-DENCE - The Complete Season and Maria-Holic! Complete Collection. Notable announcements from last week: Perhaps the biggest announcement from last week is that Criterion will be releasing 4K discs from the Criterion Collection label. Thus far the titles slated are Citizen Kane, Menace II Society, The Piano, Mulholland Dr., The Red Shoes, and A Hard Day’s Night. The email from Criterion alludes to Citizen Kane being the first release, in November. We should see more information this week with their November title slate announcement. This leaves a small number of release houses that are not on board with 4K yet. Off the top of my head I don't recall Image Entertainment (RLJ), MVD and Anchor Bay doing any 4K discs. Disney has announced the release of 2021's Cruella for release on September 21st. For 4K releases, expect a standard release, a Target Exclusive, Best Buy Exclusive and a Walmart Exclusive. For Blu-ray/DVD expect a standard release and a 2-movie release that includes the animated 101 Dalmatians. Universal's archive/mod label has revealed their next batch of titles. They include American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules, Because of Him, Can't Help Singing, For the Love of Mary, Something in the Wind, State of the Union, The Woody Woodpecker: Screwball Collection and You Should Have Left. Looks like a lot of decent vintage features in that batch. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?Posted Sun Aug 15, 2021 at 12:00 PM PDT by: -
The Criterion Collection Goes 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray With Six Titles Starting This November! As if the 4th Quarter of 2021 wasn't already really expensive! Citizen Kane, Menace II Society, The Piano, Mulholland Dr., The Red Shoes, and A Hard Day’s Night is their opening salvo into 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray starting this November 2021 Sadly at this moment - that's ALL we know. We don't know HDR or if there will be HDR for all of the films - "select films" is a bit teasing - audio (some might get Atmos), disc specs or anything of the like. Criterion will be punching out a full announcement soon, this was just the teaser to blow our minds. As if the close of 2021 wasn't already expensive, Criterion is finally jumping into the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray game. We'd heard rumblings about a couple of these titles, but we didn't expect a full slate of new additions to the collection! Until that full announcement hits, we'll just have to sit back and speculate about what Criterion is going to bring to make these releases special. When all of that info comes in, we'll update our listings and get that good stuff out to you folks. What do you think of Criterion's first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray lineup? All winners? Or are you too tired to upgrade your collection? [UPDATE 8/16] We now have cover art and specs for Citizen Kane, Menace II Society, and Mulholland Dr. - click the links for full details - It looks like these three are the first ones to come with the other three arriving in December or later into 2022. The first of these editions and their special features will be detailed in the November 2021 announcement next week, with others to follow in subsequent months. The most dazzling debut in cinema history, Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane was Criterion’s first laserdisc release 37 years ago. It now rejoins the library after a long absence, making its first appearance in 4K Ultra HD along with Allen and Albert Hughes riveting breakthrough, Menace II Society; Jane Campion’s Academy Award–winning The Piano, starring Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin in her breakout role; David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr., a tale of love and jealousy in the city of dreams; Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s singular Technicolor fantasia The Red Shoes; and Richard Lester’s timeless movie musical A Hard Day’s Night, which brought the Beatles’ revolutionary talent and irreverent humor to the big screen. Each title will be available in a 4K UHD+Blu-ray combo pack including a 4K UHD disc of the feature film as well as the film and its special features on Blu-ray. Select films will be presented in Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos. Stay tuned for more details in the November announcement!Posted Wed Aug 11, 2021 at 10:20 AM PDT by: -

Blu-ray & 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Release Guide - August 8 - August 14, 2021How has your Summer been so far? Seen any good movies or shows that you can't wait to own on disc? Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 12 of our weekly release guide, a look at the highlights of what's coming out this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray/Digital Releases- There are no 4K discs slated for release this week. Don't despair, there's still plenty up and coming. HD Blu-ray/Digital releases- Not a very large list of 'A' titles this week, but there are a few to consider. As far as 'B' titles, there are a bunch this week, which I will not highlight. Some of them have some well known talent. In the Criterion Collection, look for After Life this week. It's a foreign (Japan) drama film from a few decades ago. LionsGate presents American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally, which features Meadow Williams and Al Pacino. Also, Finding You, their next entry in the drama/romance category. Just when you thought that was all, The House Next Door: Meet the Blacks 2 comes out this week too! Oh, but there's more from them this week, Occupation: Rainfall closes out the list. If you bought Part One, this week Warner Bros. releases Batman: The Long Halloween - Part Two. There's rumor out there that a 4K might be coming, but when, if and where were not exactly filled in. The Warner Archive label brings One Crazy Summer to disc this week, it's been a long while since I had seen this one. Getting ever closer to relaing My Fellow Americans, Warner, are you listening? Shout Select presents Havoc, a Crime Drama featuring Anne Hathaway. From Paramount, The Misfits (2021) gets the list started, a pair of 'Paramount Presents' releases, Nashville and A Place in the Sun. CBS MOD is releasing the last two seasons of Charmed this week. Their business model has had me scratching my head in that order links have been pretty much nonexistent or delivery times questionable. Where's MacGyver? Anime highlights of the week, InuYasha: Set 6, Lapis Re:LiGHTS - The Complete Season and One Piece - Collection 27. Notable announcements from last week: Vinegar Syndrome's next batch of titles has been revealed. They have a street date of August 31 on their store site, and general release usually follows later. Titles include Auntie Lee's Meat Pies, Fantasm / Fantasm Comes Again (Peekarama), Girls School Screamers, Terminal Island - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Tough Guys Don't Dance and Whatever It Takes. Universal Studios will be releasing Carlito's Way on 4K disc later this year, with a familiar theme, a standard release and a SteelBook release. But that's not all, coming October 5th to 4K disc, Universal Classic Horror Monsters. The set features Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, and The Invisible Man. Check out the news story here. The first Miramax 4K release, Scream appears to be on track for an October release. The current (valid) link is broken, but keep trying, it will go live soon enough. The next Vestron Collector's Series release will be Dementia 13, which will feature the director's cut. Never heard of this movie or see what the big deal is about the director's cut?
