The Abyss Is Streaming In HD On Amazon Prime!Maybe one day we'll get that official The Abyss Blu-ray and 4K UHD disc? Please? Physical media connoisseurs have long waited for that beautiful day when (now) Disney/Fox would announce that James Cameron's underwater sci-fi classic The Abyss would one day arrive on disc in a condition far better than the SD letterboxed release of so long ago. Practically every time a cult classic or another title gets announced for the format someone inevitably asks the now redundant question "When are they going to put out The Abyss and True Lies?" We're also eagerly awaiting True Lies - and no that Spanish disc sourced from an old broadcast HD master doesn't count. While we're at it let's toss on Kathryn Bigalow's Strange Days too. The excuses for why either The Abyss or True Lies haven't been released get thinner and thinner every year. 2019 was the perfect time for those films to arrive. The Abyss turned 30 and True Lies turned 25 - major milestone anniversaries that would be ripe pickings for collectors to gobble up these films. Alas, we wait. And wait. The latest rumor is maybe possibly in 2022 timed to help hype Cameron's Avatar 2... but then maybe the Abyss never existed at all and we're all sharing a collective fever dream, like in Prince of Darkness. Ease Your Pain - Watch The Abyss In HD On Amazon Prime Previously, whenever this film would crop up on streaming services or if you were lucky and managed to redeem the Disc-To-Digital option on VUDU, it was sourced from the ancient letterboxed master used for DVD - and then it wasn't even anamorphic and would often appear squeezed. This current streaming master is in much better shape free of any speckling, grit, or other age-related issues. It also has different color timing than the old DVD and LaserDisc favoring that icy Cameron Blue tint instead of the brighter purplish tone folks may remember. In the video below you can see the differences. We did have to adjust the brightness of the HD Streaming, the recorder we used darkened it quite a bit. Also, this video is rougher than our usual full rez spit and polished comparisons - for some reason this lo-fi unvarnished version is the only one that would get past having a complete copyright block preventing anyone from viewing it. DVD opens the video and rotates every 12 seconds. As we continue to wait... and wait... and wait for The Abyss to arrive on 4K or even just a proper Blu-ray - this HD stream from Amazon Prime will just have to hold us over. And what's here ain't bad at all! Of course, in order to view this film, you need to have an Amazon Prime account. Time To Sell Some Plasma - The Expensive September 2021 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Release GuideWell, it's that time of year again. That glorious period of September through December where the summer ends, the cool weather starts, and studios absolutely crush physical media fans under the weight of a mass of new releases and special collector's editions. In particular, this year seems to be stacked for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases either getting their first outing on disc or are getting exciting new special editions. While this is a lot of fun, your wallet won't be happy. That list of Christmas presents you were going to get for other people - fold it back up and put it away. You're going to need every cent left in your bank account. Now, this release slate is still pretty volatile. In the course of prepping this guide, many titles moved (Halloween 1-5 moved to the beginning of October, Columbia Classics Vol 2 moved to the end of the month) or haven't been officially announced yet or aren't up for pre-order. SO with that in mind, we'll update our listings and this guide if there are any significant changes as they come along. Since there's a lot of titles some with a variety of retailer exclusives, lets get to it. September 2021 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Release Guide 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases - September 7th, 2021 Not to start things slowly, 4K fans get hit with a number of great releases right out of the gate. Zack Snyder's Justice League finally arrives on U.S. shores, John Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi creepy classic The Thing hits the format, while some more solo Hitchcock releases trickle out on top of the first four films of the original crew of Star Trek get 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray upgrades. Boss Baby 2 is also a thing, and supposedly Highlander is also coming but info on that release has been so scanty I wouldn't be surprised if Lionsgate shifts that one down the road a little bit. Black Widow is also set to hit on the 14th, but that's also another one that's not up for pre-order anywhere yet. [UPDATE 8/26] The standard edition of Black Widow is finally up for pre-order on Best Buy. The SteelBook hasn't been posed yet, but as soon as it is we'll update the listing and the article. Night Shyamalan films Unbreakable finally getting a 4K upgrade, but then we're hit with a ton of retailer exclusives for Cruella, the latest Speedy and Upset franchise entry - F9: The Fast Saga, and topped off with Stanley Kubrick's iconic A Clockwork Orange F9: The Fast Saga 4K UHD Blu-ray F9: The Fast Saga 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook Unbreakable 4K UHD Blu-ray Unbreakable 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook Cruella 4K UHD Blu-ray Cruella 4K UHD Blu-ray Target Exclusive Cruella 4K UHD Blu-ray Best Buy Exclusive Cruella 4K UHD Blu-ray Walmart Exclusive A Clockwork Orange 4K UHD Blu-ray A Clockwork Orange 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases - September 28th, 2021 Just when you thought you'd be able to save up a few bucks and prepare you for the deluge coming your way in October - Sony had to go and delay their Columbia Classics Vol 2 set until the final week of the month. If that wasn't enough of a hit, Arrow Video's Children of the Corn, The Forever Purge, the standard edition of The Transformers: The Movie and a new SteelBook for Rob Zombie's 3 From Hell all hit at the same time. Given the time it takes to ship and process through customs and all that nonsense, it's almost impossible to review ahead of street date, but we get to them as fast as we can! Children of the Corn Limited Edition 4K UHD Blu-ray U.K. Import The Servant 4K UHD Blu-ray U.K. Import That's all for now. Again - this list is pretty fluid at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised at all if one or a couple of these didn't have a release date change suddenly crop up. If when that happens we'll update our listings and this article ASAP. We hope this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release guide for September 2021 is helpful! Thanks again for all of your pre-orders, they really do go a long, long way towards helping us keep this little engine running.Posted Wed Aug 25, 2021 at 05:08 AM PDT by: -

Warner Bros. and Studio Canal are teaming up to bring fans of Coppola's iconic 1983 coming of age film The Outsiders: The Complete Novel the true definitive 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Not content with just his extended cut, the Theatrical Version will also be enjoying the same 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray upgrade. The film will be getting a theatrical re-release starting September 26 followed by the 4-Disc 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release on November 9th ahead of its arrival on HBO Max on November 16th. The Outsiders: The Complete Novel 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray We don't have full specs for HDR grade, audio format, or price point we've reached out for clarification and will update our listing as we get it and when the pre-orders go live. Here's the full press release from Warner Brothers & Studio Canal: WARNER BROS. AND STUDIOCANAL ANNOUNCE A BRAND NEW 4K RESTORATION OF FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA’S THE OUTSIDERS THE COMPLETE NOVEL IN ASSOCIATION WITH AMERICAN ZOETROPE Burbank, CA – August 24, 2021 – Warner Bros., STUDIOCANAL, and American Zoetrope today announce the forthcoming 4K restoration of the 1983 American coming-of-age drama, THE OUTSIDERS THE COMPLETE NOVEL, from Academy Award®-winning visionary director Francis Ford Coppola. Created to give fans more of the action that took place in S.E. Hinton’s celebrated book, Coppola’s latest, definitive version includes new music, as well as several scenes cut from the theatrical version which were reconstructed from original camera negatives. Warner Bros. will release THE OUTSIDERS THE COMPLETE NOVEL theatrically in the US and Canada beginning on September 26th with tickets going on sale this week. Details are available at Fandango.com. Warner Bros. will also make both it and the original version available in a 4K UHD Collector’s Edition and on digital platforms starting November 9th. Additionally, THE OUTSIDERS THE COMPLETE NOVEL will be available on HBO Max beginning on November 16th and will also air this fall on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Said Coppola, ‘“The Outsiders The Complete Novel’ came about after meeting students over the years who repeatedly asked me why certain scenes from S.E. Hinton’s wonderful book were missing from the theatrical version. These questions reminded about my inspiration for the film—in 1980, a contingent of 12- to 14-year-old students wrote and asked me to make it. I listened to those young fans back then, and I continue to listen to young people now and believe in their opinions, so this complete film version of the novel is for them.” STUDIOCANAL is handling the release internationally and will release THE OUTSIDERS THE COMPLETE NOVEL theatrically in the UK, and will make both it and the original version available in a 4K UHD Collector’s Edition and on Blu-Ray, DVD and digital platforms starting November 8th. Based on the 1967 best-selling young-adult novel by S. E. Hinton, THE OUTSIDERS is considered the first “Brat Pack” movie, as it stars then-unknown young actors in many of their first break-through roles, including C. Thomas Howell (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial), Rob Lowe (“The West Wing,” “Parks and Recreation”), Emilio Estevez (St. Elmo's Fire, The Breakfast Club, Young Guns), Matt Dillon (Crash, There's Something About Mary), Tom Cruise (Top Gun, Mission Impossible series, Jerry Maguire), Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing, Point Break, Ghost), Ralph Macchio (The Karate Kid, Cobra Kai), and Diane Lane (Unfaithful, Under the Tuscan Sun), who went on to superstar-caliber careers. THE OUTSIDERS takes place in '60s Oklahoma, centering on two rival teen gangs: The “Greasers,” a class term that refers to the young men on the East Side, the poor side of town, and the “Socs,” short for Socials, who are the “West-side rich kids.” Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell), a tender-hearted and kind teenager’s life is changed forever one night when a scuffle with his friend Johnny (Ralph Macchio) inadvertently leads to the death of a rival gang member, and the boys are forced to go into hiding to avoid arrest. Soon Ponyboy and Johnny, along with Dallas (Matt Dillon) and their other Greaser buddies, must contend with the consequences of their violent lives. While some Greasers try to achieve redemption, others meet tragic ends. Inspired by Jo Ellen Misakian, a librarian who had sent Coppola a letter signed by over 300 students explaining that the book was cult reading among local teens, Coppola captures adolescent teen emotions and the growing realization of life’s cruelties and a yearning for a life not attainable. “For ‘The Outsiders The Complete Novel’ as well as the original theatrical version, we wanted to create and maintain the highest level of visual quality possible for these restorations,” commented James Mockoski, Film Archivist and Restoration Supervisor at American Zoetrope. “We took the unusual path of locating all the various elements that went into creating the film's most elaborate visual effects sequences and re-scanned them. Luckily, Mr. Coppola is an archivist at heart and he kept every piece of film he shot, so we were able to unify scenes from the film using the original camera negative as much as possible. It was important to Mr. Coppola to give this release its best quality presentation, and no one has ever seen this film looking as beautiful and pristine as it does now.” U.S. and International Release Dates: NORTH AMERICA (Warner Bros.) – Theatrical September 26, Home Entertainment November 9, HBO Max November 16, TCM Fall 2021 UK HOME (STUDIOCANAL) – Theatrical TBC, Home Entertainment November 8 AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND (STUDIOCANAL) – Home Entertainment November 10 GERMANY (STUDIOCANAL) – Home Entertainment November 11 The stunning 4-disc 4K UHD Collector’s Edition will include both restored features - The Outsiders The Complete Novel and The Outsiders: 4K UHD disc includes The Outsiders The Complete Novel and The Outsiders in 4K with HDR Digital codes for both films are also included Plus, an impressive array of extra features: NEW Restoration Interview with Cinematographer Stephen Burum, Zoetrope Head of Archives and Restorations James Mockoski and Colourist Gregg Garvin NEW Deleted Scenes NEW Francis Ford Coppola Introduction NEW Francis Ford Coppola Anatomy of a Scene NEW Old House New Home featurette Audio Commentary with Francis Ford Coppola Audio Commentary with Matt Dillon, C. Blu-ray & 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Release Guide - August 22 - August 28, 2021The last week of August is upon us. Where has the Summer gone? Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 14 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray/Digital Releases- For 4K releases, there are two new releases and two catalog titles. The Covid delayed title Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway comes to 4K disc from Sony Pictures. I recall one of the movie posters using the word 'finally!' when referring to the theatrical release date. I had imported the first movie over a matter of cover art preference, at least this one isn't terrible, albeit a bit YELLOW. The next movie has been retitled for marketing purposes, Warner Bros releases The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It. It originally was not named Conjuring 3 in case you were wondering. Hope this means the first two will see a 4K upgrade as well. Again, I imported the first one on blu-ray as a SteelBook, it had a much nicer cover art. If you enjoyed Arrow's 4K release of The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, or are a completionist, Dario Argento's follow up titled The Cat o' Nine Tails sees 4K disc, offered as another one of those releases I like to refer to as a 'fat pack.' This one is loaded with all the extras we have come to expect and enjoy from a 'fat pack' release. And the final 4K disc of the week from Blue Underground is titled Two Evil Eyes. Thus far Arrow Video and Blue Underground have done phenomenal work on their 4K releases. HD Blu-ray/Digital releases- Getting the blu-ray versions out of the way first, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It are available if 4K is not for you. Franchise releases of Peter Rabbit and The Conjuring are also being offered on blu-ray. Criterion Collection this week, look for Ashes and Diamonds, a Polish Drama/War film that I will not even pretend to know or explain. You can be sure that Criterion put as much care and effort on this one as they do on all their releases. The Oh, God! Collection from Shout Select marks the first time you can get all three releases on Blu-ray, and as a single SKU package to boot. Also from Arrow Video this week, horror master Yasuzô Masumura brings us Blind Beast. From LionsGate this week, look for Habit, a film that at first seemed like a meh, but after watching a few extended previews, looks like a lot of fun. Then there's Lansky, a bio/crime film starring Sam Worthington and Harvey Keitel. For animated/anime releases, the highlights are Dreambuilders, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Season 3, Naruto: Set 4 and Show By Rock!! Mashumairesh!! - Season Three. Warner Archives releases this week include Prince of the City and Prodigal Son: The Complete Second Season. Honorable Mention -- this week Severin is releasing a lot of forgotten films, but I think the movie Overboard (Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell) is a first time that breaks from the norm of their horror releases and brings us something a little bit lighter. Friday releases include the usual music/arts releases. The Imprint releases that were due this week were pushed back four weeks, most likely related to production issues. (Amazon lists them as September 3rd, but Imprint's site itself says September 15th.) >Donizetti: Le Convenienze Ed Inconvenienze Teatrali >Engelbert Humperdinck - Totally Amazing >Hugo Von Hofmannsthal: Jedermann >Rameau: Platee >Teatro Alla Scala Opera Box >Tesseract: Portals Notable announcements from last week: More information about Criterion's November releases has come out including which 4Ks and when. Check out the article for details! Multiple October titles have been revealed from the various Shout! Factory labels. They include Coppelia, Deadly Friend, Don Knotts: 5-Film Collection, Killer Party, A Letter to Momo, Liam Neeson Double Feature, Little Vampire, Martial Arts Double Feature, Nothing But Trouble, Shirobako: The Movie, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Six Minutes to Midnight. Discotek's October batch so far includes City Hunter: The Complete First Series, Hajime No Ippo The Fighting! TV Series Collection 3, Lupin the 3rd Part V: Misadventures in France, Sgt. Frog: The Complete First Season and Shaman King. Disney will be releasing Who Framed Roger Rabbit on 4K disc, a standard edition and an overly YELLOW Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. Find out who framed the rabbit on December 7th (tentatively.) StudioCanal UK has announced a 40th Anniversary Edition 4K release of The Howling. Much like they did with the John Carpenter releases, they will release a fat-pack release and a SteelBook release. Both releases are expected October 25th. If you don't want to import, we can hope that Shout Factory gets around to it in the next year or so. Maybe they can at least confirm it is in the works, even if they don't offer an exact date. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?Posted Sun Aug 22, 2021 at 12:00 PM PDT by: -

Available on 4K Ultra HDTM, Blu-Ray, DVD and Steelbook editions from the 25th October 2021. With THE HOWLING, director Joe Dante (GREMLINS, INNERSPACE) and screenwriter John Sayles (LONE STAR, PASSION FISH) created a unique horror shocker loosely based on part one of author Gary Brandner's trilogy of novels. The film took the genre of werewolf horror to a whole new level, with its dark atmosphere, pointed irony and elaborately modelled special effects and make-up by Rob Bottin (ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL). The film received a Saturn Award for Best Horror Film in 1980. Commenting on the restoration, director Joe Dante said: “I can honestly say this 4K restoration is the best The Howling has looked since it came out of the lab in 1980 - maybe better. I'm happy to have it back in circulation at last.” SYNOPSIS: Karen West narrowly escapes death at a rendez-vous she has deliberately accepted with a murderer whose name is Eddie. He is shot by the police. After this, the young woman begins to have nightmares and goes to a therapy centre with her husband Roy. This restoration project was conducted from start to finish in 4K with a 16-bit color depth bringing all the details from the original negative to life. The 4K 16-bit scan was made from the original 35mm negative. The image from the 1.20 negative was then cropped to 1.85 in order to respect the original format of the film projection. The film was calibrated in the P3-D65-ST2084 color space, with a 1000 nits screen. The calibration was based on the reference of 35mm positive copies of the period as well as, for the video part, on the basis of existing reference masters. The restoration took a few hundred hours of meticulously filtering in order to correct the defects related to the age of the film and to the wear of time. STUDIOCANAL is proud to present THE HOWLING in DCP 4K, and a DOLBY VISION UHD HDR & SDR video master, through a brand-new Prestige 4K edition. The blockbuster film has generated more than $600 million worldwide and now fans can own the global box-office phenomenon that features “unbelievable, jaw-dropping action” (io9) on Digital September 7, 2021 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™ and DVD on September 21, 2021 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Featuring the original theatrical release, the Director’s Cut and more than an hour of exclusive bonus content – including a behind-the-scenes look at the gravity-defying stunts and nitro-charged cars, a gag reel and even more justice for Han – fans can now add F9 to their collection to watch again and again! Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) thought he’d left his outlaw life in the rear-view mirror, but not even he can outrun the past. When his forsaken brother Jakob (John Cena, Bumblebee) unexpectedly resurfaces as an elite assassin, the crew comes back together to help Dom confront the sins of his own past and stop a world-shattering plot. Franchise veteran Justin Lin returns to the director’s seat for F9 and delivers this supercharged version of the hit film. From extended action to spectacular scenes that weren’t shown in theaters, F9: The Director’s Cut explodes with additional content that can only be experienced on home entertainment! F9 also stars returning franchise cast members Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster and Sung Kang, with Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron. The film is directed by Justin Lin, who helmed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth installments of the series. Based on characters created by Gary Scott Thompson, the story is by Justin Lin & Alfredo Botello (consultant, Star Trek Beyond) and Daniel Casey (Kin). The screenplay is by Daniel Casey & Justin Lin. The film is produced by Neal H. Moritz, Vin Diesel, Justin Lin, Jeffrey Kirschenbaum (xXx: Return of Xander Cage), Joe Roth (Maleficent franchise), Clayton Townsend (Bridesmaids) and Samantha Vincent (xXx:Return of Xander Cage).BONUS FEATURES on 4K UHD, BLU-RAYTM, DVD AND DIGITAL: GAG REEL F9: ALL IN: The Fast family invites you to be part of the crew as they give you an intimate look at how F9 propels this epic franchise to even greater heights. This bonus feature, with more than 46 minutes of content, includes returning characters, new cast members, huge stunts, big surprises, and so much more. PRACTICALLY FAST: When it comes to stunts, it seems each film in The Fast Saga outdoes the last. In this piece, we examine how Justin Lin and his team go to great lengths to shoot as many stunts as they can in-camera and practically, giving the film an authenticity that cannot be achieved solely through visual effects or CGI. SHIFTING PRIORITIES: We first met many of these characters when The Fast and the Furious was released in 2001. In the 20+ years since, not only have the characters themselves grown and evolved, but so have the actors that portray them. Art often imitates life, and we look at how that's particularly true in F9. JUSTICE FOR HAN: Han is back! Sung Kang and Justin Lin discuss the genesis for the return of this beloved character, while the cast reveals how much it means to them to have Kang back along for the ride. A DAY ON SET WITH JUSTIN LIN: The job of a director on any movie production is huge. The job of a director on a production the scale of F9 is immeasurable. Spend a day with Justin Lin and see just how demanding it is to navigate a production day when you're the one with all the answers. JOHN CENA: SUPERCAR SUPERFAN: John Cena is a real-life car expert, and no franchise does cars like Fast. Watch John jump from exotic car to exotic car like a kid in a candy store, giving you a true fan's look at some of the rarest and most expensive automobiles in the world. Space Jam: A New Legacy Dunking On Blu-ray & 4K UHD Blu-ray October 5thLeBron James and the Tune Squad fight Don Cheadle in Space Jam: A New Legacy - coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray October 5th I heard a lot of mixed on this one, I couldn't make the time to check it out myself but the first one has a 50/50 reputation as well - some folks loved it while others couldn't muster up much enthusiasm. Regardless, Warner Brothers is giving this sequel/reboot the home video love on both formats. So far we haven't seen any retailer exclusive packaging, but a SteelBook appearance wouldn't be a surprise. We don't yet know if the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray will include Dolby Vision or just the base HDR10 grade, but each version gets a Dolby Atmos audio mix! with the same set of bonus features.
