This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman's family, and the world, from irreversible destruction. From inspiration to execution, filmmakers reveal how they leveled Black Manta up to the realm of supervillains. The Criterion Collection Dates and Details April 2024 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray SlatePeter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock and Mathieu Kassovitz's La haine will be getting 4K UHD Blu-ray upgrades; A Blu-ray of Nancy Savoca's Dogfight; and Agnes Hranitzky & Béla Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies as well as Mikhail Kalatozov’s I Am Cuba on both formats. As previously mentioned, Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock will be getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray + Blu-ray edition. It will be available for purchase on April 9. Picnic at Hanging RockThe Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray This sensual and striking chronicle of a disappearance and its aftermath put director Peter Weir on the map and helped usher in a new era of Australian cinema. Based on an acclaimed 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay, Picnic at Hanging Rock is set at the turn of the twentieth century and concerns a small group of students from an all-female college who vanish, along with a chaperone, while on a St. Valentine’s Day outing. Less a mystery than a journey into the mystic, as well as an inquiry into issues of class and sexual repression in Australian society, Weir’s gorgeous, disquieting film is a work of poetic horror whose secrets haunt viewers to this day. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Peter Weir and director of photography Russell Boyd, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features Interview with Weir Program on the making of the film, featuring interviews with executive producer Patricia Lovell, producers Hal McElroy and Jim McElroy, and cast members Introduction by film scholar David Thomson, author of The New Biographical Dictionary of Film On-set documentary hosted by Lovell and featuring interviews with Weir, actor Rachel Roberts, and source-novel author Joan Lindsay Homesdale (1971), a black comedy by Weir Trailer English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by author Megan Abbott and an excerpt from film scholar Marek Haltof’s 1996 book Peter Weir: When Cultures CollideCover by Eric Skillman Mathieu Kassovitz's La haine is also getting a 4K UHD Blu-ray upgrade. Look for that in stores on April 2. La haineThe Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Mathieu Kassovitz took the film world by storm with La haine, a gritty, unsettling, and visually explosive look at the racial and cultural volatility in modern-day France, specifically the low-income banlieue districts on Paris’s outskirts. Aimlessly passing their days in the concrete environs of their dead-end suburbia, Vinz (Vincent Cassel), Hubert (Hubert Koundé), and Saïd (Saïd Taghmaoui)—Jewish, African, and Arab, respectively—give human faces to France’s immigrant populations, their bristling resentment at their marginalization slowly simmering until it reaches a climactic boiling point. A work of tough beauty, La haine is a landmark of 1990s French cinema and a gripping reflection of its country’s ongoing identity crisis. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital master, supervised by director of photography Pierre Aïm and approved by director Mathieu Kassovitz, with 2.0 and 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features Audio commentary by Kassovitz Introduction by actor Jodie Foster Ten Years of “La haine,” a documentary featuring cast and crew members Featurette on the film’s banlieue setting Production footage Deleted and extended scenes, with an afterword by Kassovitz Behind-the-scenes photos Trailers PLUS: An essay by film scholar Ginette Vincendeau and a 2006 appreciation by filmmaker Costa-GavrasCover by Neil Kellerhouse The only Blu-ray solo release is Dogfight from filmmaker Nancy Savoca arriving on April 30. DogfightThe Criterion Collection An ineffably bittersweet portrait of youth in the 1960s, Nancy Savoca’s funny, sensitive tale of love and war etches two vividly alive characters: aspiring San Francisco folk singer Rose (Lili Taylor) and hotheaded, Vietnam-bound marine Eddie (River Phoenix), who meet on the occasion of a cruelly misogynistic party where men compete to bring the most unattractive dates they can find. But what begins as a night to forget unexpectedly develops into something far more meaningful. Featuring music by folk legends Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Pete Seeger, Dogfight captures the miracle of human connection while gracefully subverting ideas surrounding machismo, patriotic duty, and the very meaning of America itself. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 2K digital restoration, supervised by director Nancy Savoca, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack Audio commentary featuring Savoca and producer Richard Guay New interview with Savoca and actor Lili Taylor conducted by filmmaker Mary Harron New interviews with cinematographer Bobby Bukowski, production designer Lester Cohen, script supervisor Mary Cybulski, music supervisor Jeff Kimball, supervising sound editor Tim Squyres, and editor John Tintori Trailer English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by film critic Christina NewlandNew cover inspired by an original theatrical poster Agnes Hranitzky & Béla Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies will be available on 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray. The release date is April 16. Werckmeister HarmoniesThe Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray This mesmeric parable of societal collapse is an enigma of transcendent visual, philosophical, and mystical resonance. Adapted from a novel by László Krasznahorkai, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown time in an unnamed village, where, one day, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens that builds inexorably toward violence. In thirty-nine hypnotic long takes engraved in ghostly black and white, auteur Béla Tarr and codirector-editor Ágnes Hranitzky conjure an apocalyptic vision of dreamlike dread and fathomless beauty. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Béla Tarr, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features Family Nest (1979), Tarr’s first feature film New interview with Tarr by film critic Scott Foundas New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by film programmer and critic Dennis LimNew cover by Polly Dedman And last but not least is Mikhail Kalatozov’s I Am Cuba arriving on 4K UHD Blu-ray. A Blu-ray edition will be also be available, and both editions hit stores on April 23. I Am CubaThe Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Both a landmark of radical political cinema and one of the most visually ravishing films ever made, this legendary hymn to revolution shimmers across the screen like a fever dream of rebellion. The result of an extraordinarily ambitious collaboration between the Soviet and Cuban film industries, director Mikhail Kalatozov’s I Am Cuba unfolds in four explosive vignettes that capture Cuban life on the brink of transformation, as crushing economic exploitation and inequality give way to a working-class uprising. Backed by Carlos Fariñas’s stirring score, the dazzling camera work by Sergei Urusevsky—an inspiration for generations of filmmakers to follow—gives flight to the movie’s message of liberation. 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features “I Am Cuba,” the Siberian Mammoth, a 2004 documentary on the making of the film featuring key participants Interview from 2003 with filmmaker Martin Scorsese New appreciation of the film by cinematographer Bradford Young Trailer Alternate Russian-dubbed soundtrack New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by film critic Juan Antonio García BorreroNew cover by Century Pre-orders should be available in the coming daysPosted Tue Jan 16, 2024 at 11:34 AM PST by: -

In Sync With HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Jan 14, 2024Another light to moderate week for 4K titles, with blu-ray somewhere around normal. This gives us time to prepare for the end of the month's motherload. Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 33 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of January 14th - January 20th, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- For Import Monday, Second Sight's take on Mean Streets. It is reported to be the same transfer as Criterion's recent release, but of course more swaggy. With practically a one-week notice, Universal informs the world that Trolls: Band Together streets on the 16th. With that being said, a standard edition only, no SteelBook option or retailer exclusives this go round. From Synapse Films, Blood Feast (2016) gets that 4K upgrade. Between last week and this, we have three titles with the word 'Blood' in the title. Next, from Criterion Collection, a 90s Western titled Lone Star. Vague memories on this one. Still on target for a Tuesday release, Police Story 3: Supercop (standard edition) with Jackie Chan comes at us via 88 Films. This still leaves Police Story 2 4K as an import only, either as a trilogy set or by itself. And the final 4K title for this week, The Raid: Redemption from Sony Pictures and in a SteelBook package. Next week we see a couple of decent imports, another Justice League animated, and a bit of Aahnold comedy. Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases includes Trolls: Band Together from Universal, Blood Feast (2016) from Synapse Films and Lone Star from Criterion Collection. Doubling back to Trolls, as always, there's a what's out so far collection (Trolls 3-Movie Collection), blu-ray only, not 4K, as well as a Walmart Exclusive and a Target Exclusive. Again, not 4K, so I guess somehow us 4K collectors have no interest in retailer exclusives!?? Omitting all the reprints this week, we are left with just a few more titles (by volume) than last week. From Sony Pictures and just in time for (next) Christmas, Journey to Bethlehem. The latest GKIDS animated release Ernest & Célestine: A Trip to Gibberitia comes to us via Shout! Factory. Arrow Video has a box set for us this week, Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe. Just one Anime highlight this week, Love Flops Complete Collection. Debuting to blu-ray this week from MGM, Mademoiselle (1966). Notable announcements from last week: Barnes & Noble right now through February 5th has Arrow Video titles at 50% off. No doubt Amazon will match prices on a majority of them as well. Great time to get those titles you have been waiting to get! Shout Factory has revealed multiple titles for March 2024, for 4K, K-19: The Widowmaker, Carrie (2013), Child's Play (2019) and Quigley Down Under. For blu-ray so far, Over the Edge and Stephen King's The Shining (TV Series). Upcoming from Paramount in 4K, Major League, which is also available as a SteelBook option as well, Contagion, and, Primal Fear as a Paramount Presents title. Universal is offering a couple of 4K upgrades, Harriet, The 355 and Ticket To Paradise. Disney has revealed their latest MCU title, The Marvels is coming to blu-ray and 4K February 13th. Disney Pixar's WISH will street March 12th. Best Buy appears to be beginning to dismantle their physical media operations. A visit to their web site shows a majority of titles not available for delivery, and the store closest to me has not restocked anything recently. For Exclusive SteelBooks in the future, it would appear Walmart will be the place to look. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?Posted Sun Jan 14, 2024 at 09:00 AM PST by: -

Steven Soderbergh's Contagion Infects 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on February 27The 2011 thriller Contagion from director Steven Soderbergh and featuring an all-star cast including Marion Cottilard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, and more is getting a 4K UHD Blu-ray release on February 27. An international traveler reaches into the snack bowl at an airport bar before passing her credit card to a waiter. A business meeting begins with a round of handshakes. A man coughs on a crowded bus... One contact. One instant. And a lethal virus is transmitted. When Beth Emhoff (Paltrow) returns to Minneapolis from business in Hong Kong, what she thought was jet lag takes a virulent turn. Two days later, she’s dead in the ER and the doctors tell her shocked and grieving husband (Damon) they have no idea why. Soon, others exhibit the same mysterious symptoms: hacking coughs and fever, followed by seizure, brain hemorrhage... and ultimately, death. The numbers quickly multiply as the contagion sweeps across all borders, fueled by the countless human interactions that make up the course of an average day. A global pandemic explodes. As the death toll escalates and people struggle to protect themselves and their loved ones in a society breaking down, one activist blogger (Law) claims the public isn't getting the truth about what's really going on and sets off an epidemic of paranoia and fear as infectious as the virus itself.
