"A 4K it was..." Orson Welles' Iconic Thriller 'The Lady from Shanghai' Comes to 4K UHD July 23rd“My 4K UHD had torn himself from the player, and the scent, or maybe the stain it was, and him bleeding his bitrate away drove the rest of them mad. Then the collectors took to eating each other.” Orson Welles' 1948 thriller THe Lady from Shanghai will devour its first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release from Sony, come July 23rd. From the terrific performances, the crisp dialog, and the incredible hall of mirrors finale, the film is one of Welles' all-time greats often overshadowed by his many other cinematic masterpieces. Co-starring Rita Hayworth, this iconic thriller will finally see it's day on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as a single-disc release with Dolby Vision HDR and a swath of archival extras. The Lady from Shanghai - 4K Ultra HD SYNOPSISBaffling murders, fascinating plot twists, and remarkable camerawork all contribute to this spellbinding, time-honored film noir written, directed by, and starring Orson Welles. Hired to work on a yacht belonging to the disabled husband of femme fatale Elsa Bannister (Rita Hayworth), Michael O’Hara (Welles) is an innocent man drawn into a dangerous web of intrigue and murder. The subject of great controversy and scandal upon its initial release, THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI shocked 1948 audiences by presenting Hayworth with her flaming red hair cut short and dyed champagne blonde. THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI is now considered vintage Welles, with his famous hall-of-mirrors climax hailed as one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. Criterion Collection Crowns Their August Batch of 4K UHD & Blu-ray TitlesThe Criterion Collection has announced their August 2024 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray titles. This wave includes Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor in 4K, Brief Encounters / The Long Farewell: Two Films by Kira Muratova as well as Martha Coolidge's Not a Pretty Picture on Blu-ray, and finally Albert Brooks' Real Life and Mother - sold separately on both formats. On August 13, The Criterion Collection will offer Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (the Blu-ray is already available). The Last Emperor - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor won nine Academy Awards, unexpectedly sweeping every category in which it was nominated—quite a feat for a challenging, multilayered epic directed by an Italian and starring an international cast. Yet the scope of the film was, and remains, undeniably powerful—the life of Emperor Puyi, who took the throne in 1908, at age three, before witnessing decades of cultural and political upheaval within and without the walls of the Forbidden City. Recreating Qing-dynasty China with astonishing detail and unparalleled craftsmanship by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti, The Last Emperor is also an intimate character study of one man reconciling personal responsibility and political legacy. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES 4K digital restoration, presented in the aspect ratio of 2.35:1, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and two Blu-rays with the film and special features Audio commentary featuring director Bernardo Bertolucci, producer Jeremy Thomas, screenwriter Mark Peploe, and composer-actor Ryuichi Sakamoto 218-minute television version The Italian Traveler, Bernardo Bertolucci, a film by Fernand Moszkowicz tracing the director’s geographic influences, from Parma to China Footage taken by Bertolucci while on preproduction in China Two documentaries about the making of the film Program featuring cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, editor Gabriella Cristiani, costume designer James Acheson, and art director Gianni Silvestri Archival interview with Bertolucci Interviews with composer David Byrne and cultural historian Ian Buruma Trailer English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by film critic David Thomson, interviews with production designer Ferdinando Scarfiotti and actor Ying Ruocheng, a reminiscence by Bertolucci, and an essay by Fabien S. GerardCover by Lucien S. Y. Yang On the same date, Brief Encounters / The Long Farewell: Two Films by Kira Muratova will arrive on Blu-ray. Brief Encounters / The Long Farewell: Two Films by Kira Muratova - The Criterion Collection Nobody made films like Kira Muratova. Uncompromising and uncategorizable, the Ukrainian iconoclast withstood decades of censorship to realize her singular vision in hypnotically beautiful, expressionistically heightened films that remain unique in their ability to evoke complex interior worlds. Her first two solo features, Brief Encounters and The Long Farewell, are fascinatingly fragmented portraits of women navigating work, romance, and family life with a mix of deep yearning and playful pragmatism. Long suppressed by Soviet authorities, these films became legendary—along with their maker—and they now make for a revelatory introduction to this most fearlessly original of artists. SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restorations, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks Interviews with scholars Elena Gorfinkel and Isabel Jacobs Archival interview with director Kira Muratova PLUS: An essay by film critic Jessica Kiang Martha Coolidge's Not a Pretty Picture arrives on August 20. Not a Pretty Picture - The Criterion Collection Trailblazing filmmaker Martha Coolidge made her feature debut with this unflinchingly personal hybrid of documentary and fiction. Centered on an intense reenactment of Coolidge’s experience of rape in her adolescence, the film casts Michele Manenti (also a survivor) as the director’s younger self, and observes the actor and her castmates as they engage in a profound dialogue about what it means to recreate these traumatic memories, and about their attitudes concerning consent and self-blame. A high-stakes experiment in metacinema that broke new ground with its uncompromising examination of date rape, Not a Pretty Picture brings a stunning immediacy to questions about the on-screen representation of sexual violence and the limits of artistic catharsis. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Martha Coolidge, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack Interview with Coolidge conducted by filmmaker Allison Anders Old-Fashioned Woman (1974), a documentary by Coolidge about her grandmother English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by film critic Molly HaskellNew cover by Polly Dedman The 1979 comedy Real Life from Albert Brooks is headed for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray on August 27. Real Life - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Decades before reality television reigned supreme, there was Albert Brooks’s debut feature, Real Life, a brilliantly deadpan, stylistically innovative satire about the perils and pitfalls of trying to capture the truth on film. The writer-director plays “Albert Brooks,” a narcissistic Hollywood filmmaker who plans to spend the year in Phoenix embedded with Warren and Jeanette Yeager (Charles Grodin and Frances Lee McCain) and their two children, deploying an arsenal of cutting-edge equipment (including the over-the-head Ettinaur 226XL camera) to capture an American family’s ordinary day-to-day. Chronicling the project’s disastrous fallout, as the meddlesome Albert can’t help getting too close to his subjects, this pioneering mockumentary is more relevant than ever amid today’s media landscape. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Albert Brooks, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features New interview with Brooks New interview with actor Frances Lee McCain 3D trailer directed by Brooks English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by critic A. S. HamrahNew cover based on an original theatrical poster And rounding out the month also on August 27 is another Albert Brooks comedy, Mother - starring Brooks and Debbie Reynolds on both 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray. Mother - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Reeling after his second divorce and struggling with writer’s block, sci-fi novelist John Henderson (Albert Brooks) resolves to figure out where his life went wrong, and hits on an unorthodox solution: moving back in with his relentlessly disapproving, cheerfully passive-aggressive mother (Debbie Reynolds), whose favorite son has always been John’s younger brother, Jeff (Rob Morrow). It’s an experiment that, however harebrained, delivers surprising results. Brooks’s film perfectly blends the writer-director-star’s biting wit with insight and inviting warmth, while giving him a formidable foil in the delightful Reynolds, triumphant in a comeback role that’s equal parts caustic and charming. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Albert Brooks, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features New interview with Brooks New interview with actor Rob Morrow Teaser directed by Brooks English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by critic Carrie RickeyNew cover based on an original theatrical poster The Criterion Collection's August 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases should be up for pre-order soon and we will update the links when they are available.Posted Wed May 15, 2024 at 04:46 PM PDT by: -

The film is based on historical events as well as the book The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: How Churchill’s Secret Warriors Set Europe Ablaze and Gave Birth to Modern Black Ops by Damien Lewis, and the story itself also inspired Ian Fleming's post-war James Bond novels. Let's Get Spicy - HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, May 13, 2024The Summer movie season is just around the corner which means blockbusters and new releases. For the disc market, we are ramping up again to what will be a busy end of month schedule, for this week though, a few more titles than last. Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 50 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of May 12th - May 18th, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- The week begins with Import Monday and the erotic drama/romance The Dreamers. And from Warner Bros, another deluxe release, American Sniper 10th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook [UK Import]. On to Domestic Release Tuesday and starting with Warner Bros, and no doubt a title most of us have been anxiously awaiting, Dune: Part Two. You can also get this in a SteelBook Release, and the obligatory Two-film Collection release. Warner Bros also leads the catalog releases section as well. First, award winning American Sniper, directed by Clint Eastwood. This one also has a Steelbook option available. Standard Warner Bros M.O here, the UK gets a much nicer release, seen above in the import Monday section, the US gets a standard release. On a plus note, they did not use an alternate cover art for these release and they actually did put more than one special feature on the disc this time. A bit of comedy goes a long way too with Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, popcorn tub not included. And then, lastly from Warner Bros, 12 Strong, a film based on a true story of a post 9/11 U.S. Special Forces team. Paramount Presents Spine Number 44 becomes available this week, referring to Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West, starring several familiar names like Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda. The Criterion Collection this week has the 1960 mystery/thriller Peeping Tom. Closing out the 4K category, Shout! Factory has Killer Klowns from Outer Space, which can also be had in a snazzy SteelBook. Next week looks like a bear, but a lot of them are those "All 4 formats edition" releases that have been on the shelves of your local Walmart on and off for awhile, and seem unavailable to order now via Amazon. Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases include Dune: Part Two, Dune: 2-Film Collection and Peeping Tom. New release from LionsGate - Imaginary. On my maybe list, but would be on a for sure list if it was a 4K. Someone tell Blumhouse there is a hungry market for 4K discs. In the zero notice category, Universal Pictures also brings us a new release comedy/fantasy titled The American Society of Magical Negroes. The Warner Archive Collection has a few more treats for us this week with Friendly Persuasion, The Nun's Story and You're a Big Boy Now. LionsGate delivers a pair of previously released Vestron Video titles, but as Walmart Exclusive SteelBooks, look for The Gate and The Lair of the White Worm. Anime highlights include The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague - The Complete Season, KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World! - The Complete Season, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Punch - Season 2, Naruto Shippuden Set 3, A Place Further Than The Universe: The Complete Series [Collector's Edition] and Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out! The Complete Season 2, which can also be purchased as a Limited Edition Release. Shout! Factory releases Wes Craven's Dracula 2000 this week. Also the 2009 thriller Orphan gets a Collector's Edition. Notable announcements from last week: Warner Bros has detailed the release for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire to 4K and blu-ray disc, with a street date of June 11th. Not an announcement, but rather news. We just want to mention the passing of B-movie great Roger Corman at the grand age of 98. There would have been a lot of ideas never made in to movies if it were not for his vision. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? It's All For You! 'The First Omen' Terrorizes Digital May 28th & Blu-ray on July 30thIn an era where legacy horror and science fiction franchises are continued and retooled for the streaming market, it's nice to see one of these come to theaters - and it's actually good! With little marketing, The First Omen proved successful and will soon terrorize digital retailers, Hulu, and eventually Blu-ray Like Prey, The First Omen was originally slated to be a direct-to-streaming Hulu venture. But Disney wisened up and realized these films could actually make money in theaters - especially when they're actually pretty damn good! While it wasn't a massive box-office draw, it wasn't a complete failure pulling in a healthy $ 50 million (and counting) globally. Which, to me, is impressive since I didn't know the movie was even coming to theaters until three weeks before its opening. I have to wonder if it hadn't released so close to a very similar Nunsplitation flick like Immaculate if its box office prospects wouldn't have been better. Regardless, I found this to be a surprisingly effective franchise prequel with some genuinely shocking imagery. Now writer/director Arkasha Stevenson's The First Omen will begin its digital sales journey on May 28th, start streaming on Hulu on May 30th, and drop on Blu-ray and DVD on July 30th. No word on a 4K yet - but we hope one is in the works! The First Omen - Blu-ray Film SynopsisIn this psychological horror prequel to the classic Omen films, a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church. Soon, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her faith, and that reveals a terrifying conspiracy to bring about the birth of evil incarnate. The First Omen stars Nell Tiger Free (Servant), Tawfeek Barhom (Mary Magdalene), Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Ralph Ineson (The Northman) and Bill Nighy (Living). The film is directed by Arkasha Stevenson based on characters created by David Seltzer (The Omen), with a story by Ben Jacoby (Bleed) and a screenplay by Tim Smith & Arkasha Stevenson and Keith Thomas (Firestarter).Bonus Features The Mystery of Margaret – Join director Arkasha Stevenson and stars Nell Tiger Free, Bill Nighy and Maria Caballero as they dive into the character of Margaret, her relationships with other characters, and how she’s manipulated while trying to solve the film’s horrifying mystery. The Director’s Vision – Director Arkasha Stevenson talks about her love of horror films, the opportunity to expand on The Omen legacy, and crafting The First Omen entirely through a female lens. She also describes shooting in Rome, and the cast recounts working with Arkasha. Signs of The First Omen – Join the director and talented artists as they reveal some of the symbolism within the set designs and the costumes. Learn how the use of practical effects blurs the line between what is real and what is not in The First Omen’s terrifying world. 'The Last Emperor' Returns to 4K UHD Special Edition from Germany's Turbine May 14th.Bernardo Bertolucci's sumptuous biopic about the controversial Chinese leader returns to 4K UHD from Germany's Turbine. If you missed out on the beautiful Limited Edition Mediabooks, you can now pre-order a new Special Edition with standard packaging featuring the same excellent 4-Discs. The shame of limited editions is they often sell out - especially Mediabooks and SteelBooks. Thankfully Germany's Turbine Medien has come to the rescue after their own 4k UHD Mediabook releases sold through. Now fans can pick up Bertolucci's incredible biopic in 4K with standard packaging. I for one love Mediabooks - I think they look pretty damn cool - but I also concede they don't fit on most shelves very easily. I actually have a special section just for oversized packs and Mediabooks to maintain order in my collection. That's where Turbine offering up a new standard soft-pac edition is a welcome move. This set will offer up the Theatrical Cut in 4K UHD and 1080p Blu-ray, the Extended Edition on its own Blu-ray disc, with another disc dedicated to bonus features. To complete the package, the set will come with reversible insert art. Paramount Scares & Fangoria Kick Off Scream Greats Series with 'The Crow' Back in Theaters May 29th-30thEver wish you could go back and catch your favorite flicks back in the theater in all their glory? Having a great home theater setup is fun and all, but there's something special about going to the theater and scarfing down overpriced popcorn to an old favorite. Paramount Scares is bringing some of our favorite flicks back to theaters. After a series of well-performing re-releases like Disney with Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace, Sony bringing back all eight Spider-Man films, and Universal celebrating The Mummy's 25th, it's Paramount's turn to get into the mix. Teaming with Fangoria, the "Scream Greats" series starts of May 29th and 30th with Alex Proyas' The Crow starring the late Brandon Lee. Sure, we literally just got a 4K disc of the film this week, but how cool is it going to be to see it back up on the big screen? After The Crow we have the following fan favorites to look forward to: FRIDAY THE 13TH PART IV: THE FINAL CHAPTER 40th Anniversary - September 8 & September 10 SLEEPY HOLLOW - October 13 & October 16 ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES - November 10 & November 13 Given how many great horror flicks reside in Paramount's archive this isn't the most aggressive slate of rereleases ever - but it's a fun one. Addams Family Values is especially well-timed! Now the fun speculative side of this development is that since we have 4K discs for The Crow and Sleepy Hollow could this mean 4K discs of Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter and Addams Family Values are coming our way? While I can't wait to see both again on the big screen (along with The Crow and Sleepy Hollow) I'd love to add both to the ever-growing 4K UHD Collection. But since Paramount has yet to do 4K discs of Friday the 13th Part 2 and Part 3 - we can only speculate there.
