Criterion Details February 2018 Blu-ray Titles[teaser]The distributor has revealed its upcoming slate of February releases, including George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead and Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs.[/teaser] In an early announcement to retailers, Criterion is preparing Tom Jones, An Actor's Revenge, The Hero, The Silence of the Lambs, Night of the Living Dead, and Elevator to the Gallows for Blu-ray throughout the month of February. Elevator to the Gallows (February 6) - For his feature debut, twenty-four-year-old Louis Malle brought together a mesmerizing performance by Jeanne Moreau, evocative cinematography by Henri Decaë, and a now legendary jazz score by Miles Davis. Taking place over the course of one restless Paris night, Malle’s richly atmospheric crime thriller stars Moreau and Maurice Ronet as star-crossed lovers whose plan to murder her husband (his boss) goes awry, setting off a chain of events that seals their fate. A career touchstone for its director and female star, Elevator to the Gallows was an astonishing beginning to Malle’s eclectic body of work, and it established Moreau as one of the most captivating actors to ever grace the screen. - New 2K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray- Interview from 2005 with actor Jeanne Moreau- Archival interviews with Moreau, director Louis Malle, actor Maurice Ronet, and original soundtrack session pianist René Urtreger- Footage of Miles Davis and Malle from the soundtrack recording session- Program from 2005 about the score featuring jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis and critic Gary Giddins- Malle’s student film Crazeologie, featuring Charlie Parker’s song “Crazeology”- Trailers- PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Terrence Rafferty, an interview with Malle, and a tribute by film producer Vincent Malle Order the Blu-ray Night of the Living Dead (February 13) - Shot outside Pittsburgh on a shoestring budget by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark, Night of the Living Dead, directed by horror master George A. Romero, is one of the great stories of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time. A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of recently dead, flesh-eating ghouls, Romero’s claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in its lead role. Stark, haunting, and more relevant than ever, Night of the Living Dead is back, in a new 4K restoration. - New 4K digital restoration, supervised by director George A. Romero, coscreenwriter John A. Russo, sound engineer Gary R. Streiner, and producer Russell W. Streiner- New restoration of the monaural soundtrack, supervised by Romero and Gary R. Streiner, and presented uncompressed on the Blu-ray- Night of Anubis, a never-before-presented work-print edit of the film- New program featuring filmmakers Frank Darabont, Guillermo del Toro, and Robert Rodriguez- Never-before-seen 16 mm dailies reel- New piece featuring Russo about the commercial and industrial-film production company where key Night of the Living Dead filmmakers got their start-Two audio commentaries from 1994, featuring Romero, Russo, producer Karl Hardman, actor Judith O’Dea, and more- Archival interviews with Romero and actors Duane Jones and Judith Ridley- New programs about the editing, the score, and directing ghouls- New interviews with Gary R. Streiner and Russel W. Streiner- Trailer, radio spots, and TV spots- More! - PLUS: An essay by critic Stuart Klawans Order the Blu-ray The Silence of the Lambs (February 13) - In this chilling adaptation of the best-selling novel by Thomas Harris, the astonishingly versatile director Jonathan Demme crafted a taut psychological thriller about an American obsession: serial murder. As Clarice Starling, an FBItrainee who enlists the help of the infamous Hannibal “the Cannibal” Lecter to gain insight into the mind of another killer, Jodie Foster subverts classic gender dynamics and gives one of the most memorable performances of her career. As her foil, Anthony Hopkins is the archetypical antihero—cultured, quick-witted, and savagely murderous—delivering a harrowing portrait of humanity gone terribly wrong. A gripping police procedural and a disquieting immersion into a twisted psyche, The Silence of the Lambs swept the Academy Awards (best picture, best director, best screenplay, best actress, best actor) and remains a cultural touchstone. - New 4K digital restoration, approved by director of photography Tak Fujimoto, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray- Alternate 5.1 surround soundtrack, presented in DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray- Audio commentary from 1994 featuring director Jonathan Demme, actors Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, screenwriter Ted Tally, and former FBI agent John Douglas- New interview with critic Maitland McDonagh- Thirty-five minutes of deleted scenes- Interview from 2005 with Demme and Foster- Inside the Labyrinth, a 2001 documentary- Page to Screen, a 2002 program about the adaptation- Scoring “The Silence,” a 2004 interview program featuring composer Howard Shore- Understanding the Madness, a 2008 program featuring interviews with retired FBI special agents- Original behind-the-scenes featurette- Trailer- PLUS: An essay by critic Amy Taubin along with, in the Blu-ray edition, a new introduction by Foster; an account of the origins of the character Hannibal Lecter by author Thomas Harris; and a 1991 interview with Demme Order the Blu-ray The Hero (February 20) - In this psychologically rich character study, written and directed by Satyajit Ray, Bengali film star Uttam Kumar draws on his real-world celebrity to play Arindam Mukherjee, a matinee idol on the brink of his first flop. When Mukherjee boards an overnight train to Delhi to accept an award, a journalist (Sharmila Tagore) approaches him seeking an exclusive interview, which initiates a conversation that sends the actor reeling down a path of self-examination. Seamlessly integrating rueful flashbacks and surreal dream sequences with the quietly revelatory stories of the train’s other passengers, The Hero is a graceful meditation on art, fame, and regret from one of world cinema’s most keenly perceptive filmmakers. - New, restored 2K digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray- Interview from 2008 with actor Sharmila Tagore- New program featuring film scholar Meheli Sen- New English subtitle translation- PLUS: An essay by author Pico Iyer and a 1980 tribute to Kumar by Ray Order the Blu-ray An Actor's Revenge (February 20) - A uniquely prolific and chameleonic figure of world cinema, Kon Ichikawa delivered a burst of stylistic bravado with this intricate tale of betrayal and retribution. Set in the cloistered world of nineteenth-century kabuki theater, the film charts a female impersonator’s attempts to avenge the deaths of his parents, who were driven to insanity and suicide by a trio of corrupt men. Ichikawa takes the conventions of melodrama and turns them on their head, bringing the hero’s fractured psyche to life in boldly experimental widescreen compositions infused with kaleidoscopic color, pop-art influences, and meticulous choreography. Anchored by a magnificently androgynous performance by Kazuo Hasegawa, reprising a role he had played on-screen three decades earlier, An Actor’s Revenge is an eye-popping examination of how the illusions of art intersect with life. - New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray- Rare 1999 Directors Guild of Japan interview with director Kon Ichikawa, conducted by critic and filmmaker Yuki Mori- New interview with critic, filmmaker, and festival programmer Tony Rayns- New English subtitle translation- PLUS: An essay by critic Michael Sragow Order the Blu-ray Tom Jones (February 27) - In the early 1960s, at the height of the British New Wave, a movement whose gritty realism they had helped establish, director Tony Richardson and playwright John Osborne set out for more fanciful narrative territory. Tom Jonesbrings a theatrical flair to Henry Fielding’s canonical eighteenth-century novel, boisterously chronicling the misadventures of the foundling of the title (Albert Finney, in a career-defining turn), whose easy charm seems to lead him astray at every turn from his beloved, the wellborn Sophie Western (Susannah York). This spirited picaresque, evocatively shot in England’s rambling countryside and featuring an extraordinary ensemble cast, went on to become a worldwide sensation, winning the Oscar for best picture on the way to securing its status as a classic of irreverent wit and playful cinematic expression. - New 4K digital restorations of the original theatrical version of the film and the 1989 director’s cut, both supervised by director of photography Walter Lassally, with uncompressed monaural and stereo soundtracks on the Blu-ray- New program on the film’s cinematography featuring a conversation between Lassally and critic Peter Cowie- Excerpt from a 1982 episode of The Dick Cavett Show featuring actor Albert Finney- New interview with actor Vanessa Redgrave on director Tony Richardson, to whom she was married from 1962 to 1967- New interview with film scholar Duncan Petrie on the movie’s impact on British cinema- Illustrated archival audio interview with composer John Addison on his Oscar-winning score for the film- New interview with the director’s-cut editor, Robert Lambert- PLUS: An essay by scholar Neil Sinyard Order the Blu-ray You can find the latest specs for all of the titles listed above linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where they're indexed throughout February.Posted Thu Nov 16, 2017 at 07:50 AM PST by: -

Want to see The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly on 4K Blu-ray? Vote now!It seems we can't go more than a day or two without some tantalizing - and somewhat frustrating - news about a possible 4K UHD Blu-ray double dip on the horizon. The latest in this neverending saga of physical media has to do with Kino Lorber Studio Classics and their proposed plans about possibly, maybe, doing a 4K UHD Blu-ray release of The Good, the bad, and the Ugly. Yeah, this news drops just a month or two after their already impressive 50th Anniversary Blu-ray release. But here's the kicker, on the Studio Classics' Facebook page, they're giving us the fans the deciding vote! All you have to do is select Happy for "Yes" or Hate for "No." They're not letting folks add to the comments thread so don't try - just let your emotional symbol flag fly. Before you get too excited - or too angry - this 4K UHD release would only be available for the 179-minute extended cut from the MGM 4K master - not the recent cooler color grading that Kino did. Why this is, I have no idea. But thems the rules. If this is a sticking thorn for you, bare in mind, participation in this may dictate future releases in 4K. Kino is on deck to release A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More on Blu-ray from fresh new 4K restorations. How cool would it be to get those on a good and proper 4K UHD Blu-ray? Kino Lorber Studio Classics is pumping out some top tier titles these days and I for one am favorable to this release - especially if it means there's a chance at future 4K UHD titles. We know studios aren't too keen on their back catalog titles these days so if Studio Classics can step in to fill the 4K UHD void on that front, I think they should get all the encouragement they can get. But that's just my piece of the pie. If you want your voice heard - head over to Kino Lorber Studio Classics Facebook page and leave your Like or Angry. We'll keep you posted as this develops.Posted Wed Nov 15, 2017 at 06:07 AM PST by:

Coming Soon to Streaming: 'The Crown,' 'Tales of Arcadia,' and More[teaser]Royalty, wizards, psychics, and more are all heading to your favorite streaming devices.[/teaser] Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu have released new trailers and info for several of their upcoming shows and movies, including The Crown: Season 2, Tales of Arcadia Trilogy, Ultimate Beastmaster: Season 2, Dark, The Benefits of Gusbandry: Season 2, and Shut Eye: Season 2. In addition, Sony has announced the digital download launch of all nine seasons of Seinfeld, and AT&T has announced an early digital release for The Ballad of Lefty Brown through DirecTV Cinema. Let it Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992 (Netflix, Now Streaming) - Takes an unflinching look at the 1992 L.A. uprising tracing its roots back a decade, unfolding its history as a series of very personal decisions and very public failures. The film weaves heartbreaking first-hand accounts from black, white, Asian, and Hispanic Angelenos of all classes, caught up in a cascade of rising tension culminating in an explosion of anger and fear after the Rodney King verdict. Check out our review here! The Crown: Season 2 (Netflix, December 8) - Tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world -- Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street - and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. Two houses, two courts, one Crown. In season two, as Queen Elizabeth's marriage and empire crumbles around her, she must do what is required to ensure the British monarchy survives. Tales of Arcadia Trilogy (Netflix, December 15) - On the surface, Arcadia appears to be a slice of timeless Americana, but it is no ordinary town. It lies at the center of magical and mystical lines that will make it a nexus for many battles among otherworldly creatures including trolls, aliens and wizards. From visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, the world of DreamWorks Trollhunters is set to expand into a trilogy of series called Tales of Arcadia. Trolls were just the beginning. Ultimate Beastmaster: Season 2 (Netflix, December 15) - An international competition series featuring 108 competitors from six countries: Spain, France, Italy, China, India and the U.S. Each episode will feature 12 competitors, two from each country, taking their shot at running one of the most physically demanding obstacle courses ever devised: “The Beast.” Nine individual winners from each episode will compete in the end against each other for the chance to become the "Ultimate Beastmaster." Dark (Netflix, December 1) - A family saga with a supernatural twist, is set in a German town in present day where the disappearance of two young children exposes the double lives and fractured relationships among four families. In ten, hour-long episodes, the story takes on a supernatural twist that ties back to the same town in 1986. The Benefits of Gusbandry: Season 2 (Amazon Prime Video, Now Streaming) - In a new, politically charged 3-episode arc, the world of The Benefits of Gusbandry bursts open to reveal a deeper side of protagonists Jackie and River. Rose and Courtenay Hameister channel a compelling and hilarious storyline about sexual agency and politics in the era of "outrage fatigue". Brooke Totman (Jackie) delivers a raw, no holds-barred performance and co-star Kurt Conroyd (River) posits enough charming comic relief as her Gusband River to keep the laughs coming in this freshly funny indie web series right out of Portland. Shut Eye: Season 2 (Hulu, December 6) - Takes a darkly comedic look at the world of Los Angeles storefront psychics and the organized crime syndicate that runs them. Former magician Charlie Haverford (Jeffrey Donovan) oversees a number of fortune telling parlors on behalf of his violent and domineering Romani kingpin boss, until a blow to the head jars him into a new mindset, making him question everything he has ever believed. Meanwhile, Sony has announced the Digital Download release of Seinfeld, allowing customers to purchase all 180 episodes from the show's nine seasons with options to buy individual episodes, full seasons or the entire series from various digital retailers like Amazon and VUDU.
