Coming Soon to Streaming: 'Stranger Things,' 'Jack Ryan,' 'The Grand Tour,' and More[teaser]Demogorgons, teenage witches, and more are all heading to your favorite streaming devices.[/teaser] Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu have released new trailers or info for several of their upcoming shows and movies, including Stranger Things: Season Three, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Wormwood, Altered Carbon, The Grand Tour: Season Two, and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. Wormwood (Netflix, December 15) - Directed by boundary-breaking filmmaker Errol Morris, Wormwood explores the limits of knowledge about the past and the lengths we’ll go in our search for the truth through the story of one man’s sixty-year quest to identify the circumstances of his father’s mysterious death. Combining a virtuosic performance by Peter Sarsgaard with Morris’ legendary interview style, Wormwood examines this case from every possible angle, bringing the viewer face-to-face with some of the United States’ darkest secrets. Altered Carbon (Netflix, February 2) - Based on the award-winning novel, Altered Carbon takes place in a future where the human mind can now be digitized and downloaded into a "cortical stack" and placed into new bodies, called sleeves. The series follows Envoy soldier Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman), who is brought back to life centuries later to investigate the attempted murder of Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), the wealthiest man on Earth. As the investigation progresses, Kovacs comes to learn that his past isn’t nearly as buried as he thought. In addition, Netflix has officially confirmed what we all already assumed: Stranger Things has been renewed for a third season. The show comes from The Duffer Brothers and stars Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, David Harbour as Chief Jim Hopper, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler, Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler, Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers, Joe Keery as Steve Harrington, Dacre Montgomery as Billy, and Sadie Sink as Max. Full details on the new season have not been announced yet, but seasons one and two are now available to stream through Netflix. Likewise, Netflix has announced a 20 episode order for a new series based on the Archie comic book character Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The show comes from Executive Producer/Writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Here's a logline per Netflix: Imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit. Casting and a release date have not been detailed yet. The Grand Tour: Season Two (Amazon Prime Video, December 8) - Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May return for a new season of the world’s greatest show about three middle-aged men rampaging around the world having unusual adventures, driving amazing cars, and engaging in a constant argument about which of them is the biggest idiot. Although it’s also the only show that combines these things so the ‘greatest’ title is pretty much uncontested. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (Amazon Prime Video, Coming in 2018) - When CIA analyst Jack Ryan stumbles upon a suspicious series of bank transfers his search for answers pulls him from the safety of his desk job and catapults him into a deadly game of cat and mouse throughout Europe and the Middle East, with a rising terrorist figurehead preparing for a massive attack against the US and her allies. Meanwhile, Amazon has also added 15 Official Selections from the 2017 Sundance Film Festival to its Prime Video lineup via the Amazon Video Direct Film Festival Stars (FFS) program. The collection includes titles like Manifesto starring Cate Blanchett, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Feature Film Prize winner Marjorie Prime, and Special Jury Award for Cinematic Vision Free and Easy. "Amazon Video Direct's Film Festival Stars program accelerates the career of deserving films, elevating cinematic curation into a galvanic connection with audiences who might never have discovered them," said Richard Lorber, President and CEO of Kino Lorber, Inc. "It's an innovative strategy that allows specialty film distributors like us to amplify support for the worthiest films—not only with additional financial backing, but unparalleled outreach only an amazing entity like Amazon can provide. I don't know what genius dreamed this up, but we at Kino Lorber are enthusiastically participating—proud to be populating the Film Festival Stars roster with many of our most important releases." Check out a trailer for Manifesto below. Finally, Hulu has announced that it has licensed the subscription streaming rights to several more shows from The Disney/ABC Television Group, including the exclusive US SVOD rights to Designated Survivor. Designated Survivor stars Kiefer Sutherland as Tom Kirkman, a lower-level cabinet member who is suddenly appointed President of the United States after a catastrophic attack on the U.S. Capitol during the State of the Union. In addition to Designated Survivor, Hulu users now have access to all episodes of Revenge, Shadowhunters, Marvel's Agent Carter, Blossom, Cougar Town, The Catch, Perception, and Bunheads. - A current Netflix subscription starts at $11 per month for HD streaming and $14 per month for Ultra HD streaming. - A current Amazon Prime subscription costs $99 per year or $11 per month. Likewise, Prime Instant Video is available as a standalone service for $9 per month. - A current Hulu subscription starts at $8 per month with commercials ($6 limited time promotional price now available). Google Is Removing YouTube from Amazon Devices[teaser]The streaming service will no longer be available through Amazon products.[/teaser] According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Google is set to remove its YouTube app from Amazon's lineup of media players, including the Fire TV. The move comes in response to Amazon's continued refusal to offer Google media devices through its site. Starting January 1, Google plans to block all access to YouTube through the Amazon Fire TV. Likewise, the service has already been removed from Amazon's Echo Show device. The move comes as a result of Amazon's decision to keep Google products like the Chromecast and Google Home smart speaker off of its retail site, and the company's refusal to make its Prime Video app available via Google Cast or Android TV. For its part, Google says that it hopes the two companies can reach an agreement soon. A similar dispute between Amazon and Apple has also been in play over the last few years, but those issues seem to be on the mend. While Apple TV devices are still not available for purchase on Amazon as of press time, the Prime Video app was just added to the Apple TV channel lineup. Amazon's latest Fire TV ($70) device offers access to a growing collection of apps (sans YouTube) and Alexa skills. Under the hood, the device is powered by an Amlogic Quad-core 1.5GHz processor and Mali450 MP3 GPU, along with 2GB of memory, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and 8 GB of storage. The player also features a new compact dongle-like design that fits behind a user's TV. In addition, the unit includes support for up to 60fps 4K Ultra HD playback with HDR10 and Dolby Atmos audio. Meanwhile, Google's latest Chromecast device, the Chromecast Ultra ($69), plugs into a display's HDMI port, allowing users to cast all of their favorite content from thousands of apps (sans Amazon) using a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. In addition, the device supports 4K, HDR (high dynamic range) and Dolby Vision content, offering playback support for videos with higher resolution, expanded colors, and enhanced contrast. Chrome Set to Add HDR Video Playback Support for Android Platform[teaser]The Google web browser will soon add mobile HDR playback support.[/teaser] According to recent updates on the Chromium Gerrit, Google is prepping an HDR (high dynamic range) update for its Chrome browser on the Android platform. Other Android apps that already offer HDR playback through supported devices include Google Play Movies & TV, Netflix, and YouTube. HDR is an advanced display and image mastering technology that offers expanded brightness to improve contrast between dark and light aspects of an image, bringing out deeper black levels and more realistic details in specular highlights -- like the sun reflecting off of an ocean -- in specially graded HDR material on compatible displays. In addition to enhanced contrast and brightness, HDR is also usually coupled with a Wide Color Gamut (WCG), offering a greater range of colors than those found in traditional HD sources. Per the updates on the Chromium Gerrit website, Chrome will soon be able to interpret HDR metadata and color spaces on VP9 encoded videos. An exact launch date or list of supported mobile devices for Chrome HDR playback have not been announced yet. With that said, Android smartphones with some level of HDR support currently include models like the Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Google Pixel, LG V30, LG G6, Sony Xperia XZ1, and Sony Xperia XZ Premium. Meanwhile, current iOS devices with HDR displays include the iPhone X. Outside of Chrome, Vimeo recently announced an update for HDR playback and upload support through the iPhone X, iPad Pro, and Apple TV 4K. Apple TV Adds Amazon Prime Video Support[teaser]Amazon's streaming service has finally arrived on Apple's media player.[/teaser] Apple and Amazon have officially launched Amazon Prime Video support for the Apple TV. The Prime Video tvOS app is now available through 3rd Generation and later Apple TV models. In addition, Amazon HDR playback support is also available on the Apple TV 4K. "There is nothing that excites us more than delighting our customers, and we are thrilled for them to stream Prime Video on Apple TV," said Mark Eamer, Vice President of Prime Video. "The app arrives just in time for the highly anticipated new season of The Grand Tour, which launches on December 8th, and Prime Video members streaming on the Apple TV 4K will have the exceptional viewing experience of 4K HDR." Previously, the only way for Amazon users to access Prime Video on the Apple TV was through an AirPlay connection to a separate iOS device with the app, like an iPhone or iPad. The lack of an official Amazon Prime Video app on the Apple TV until now has often been attributed to Amazon and Apple's competing interests in the media player and streaming services market. In fact, Amazon still does not offer Apple streaming devices for purchase through its site -- though that could change now that the Apple TV offers Prime Video. The latest gen Apple TV, dubbed Apple TV 4K, utilizes the A10X Fusion chip and offers 4K playback capabilities at up to 60 frames per second with support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision content. Users can currently view 4K HDR titles from iTunes, Amazon, and Vimeo, and HDR support for other services like Netflix is expected to be added in the coming months. In addition, the device includes 4K scaling for HD sources, Siri voice search, iCloud support for media sharing, standard AirPlay capabilities, and the ability to serve as a smart home hub for HomeKit accessories with remote access and automated control. Apple TV 4K models are in 32GB ($179) and 64GB ($199) versions. Meanwhile, an Amazon Prime subscription costs $99 per year or $11 per month. Likewise, Prime Instant Video is available as a standalone service for $9 per month. Source: Amazon, iTunes via EngadgetPosted Wed Dec 6, 2017 at 06:35 AM PST by: -
