Sony Launches 16K Crystal LED TV... for a Reported Price of Over $5 Million[teaser]The company's MicroLED display tech is now available for the home... if you happen to have a few million dollars to spare.[/teaser] Though initially only available for commercial applications, Sony has announced the release of its Crystal LED system for the the residential market. The advanced display tech can be configured in sizes up to 790-inches and resolutions up to 16K -- that is, if you can afford the reported price tag of over $5 million. "Scaling this technology to residential installation marks a milestone in Sony's efforts to get closer to consumers," said Mike Fasulo, president and chief operating officer, Sony Electronics North America. "Crystal LED delivers over a million-to-one contrast ratio, the most accurate light levels, low heat emission and a picture quality that is absolutely breathtaking. By offering the display in modular configurations, consumers now have an exciting new option for the transition from home projection systems and large-screen TVs." Sony Crystal LED systems use modular MicroLED technology with multiple panels consisting of ultra-fine, self-emissive micro-LEDs measuring just 0.003 mm². These modular pieces can then be combined to configure various screen sizes, aspect ratios, and resolutions. In addition, Crystal LED displays support HDR with 1,000 nits of brightness, 10-bit grayscale, 140% coverage of the sRGB color gamut, high frame rates of up to 120p, close to a 180-degree viewing angle, 3D playback, and 99% black surface area for high contrast and high resolution. Home installation for Crystal LED systems will be available via select Sony dealers. Here's a rundown of some sample configurations that customers can put together: Full HD Size (18 Units) at around 110-inches diagonal 4K Size (72 Units) at around 220-inches diagonal 8K Size (288 Units) at around 440-inches diagonal 16K Size (576 Units) at around 790-inches diagonal Exact pricing for the residential systems has not been confirmed, but reports by TechHive and Engadget indicate that each module costs around $10,000 -- which would make the 220-inch 4K option come in at around $720,000 and the gigantic 790-inch 16K option come in at an absolutely absurd $5.8 million. Coming Soon to Streaming: SEE, CASTLE ROCK, and More[teaser]Apple's upcoming sci-fi drama starring Jason Momoa headlines this week's roundup of streaming trailers.[/teaser] Netflix, Apple TV+, Hulu, and Amazon have all released new previews and info for several of their upcoming shows and films. Here's a full rundown of titles scheduled to arrive on each service: See (Apple TV+, November 1) - In the far future, a virus has decimated humankind. Those who survived emerged blind. Jason Momoa stars as Baba Voss, the father of twins born centuries later with the mythic ability to see—who must protect his tribe against a powerful yet desperate queen who believes it’s witchcraft and wants them destroyed. Alfre Woodard also stars as Paris, Baba Voss’ spiritual leader. Criminal (Netflix, September 20) - A police procedural with a unique premise: it takes place exclusively within the confines of a police interview suite. This stripped down, cat-and-mouse drama will focus on the intense mental conflict between the police officer and the suspect in question. Inside Bill's Brain: Decoding Bill Gates (Netflix, September 20) - From Academy Award-winning director Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, He Named Me Malala) comes Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates, a new three-part documentary that explores the mind and motivations of celebrated tech visionary, business leader, and philanthropist Bill Gates. After stepping down as CEO of Microsoft, Gates began what is undeniably one of the greatest professional second acts in modern history when he shifted his time and considerable intellect toward solving some of the world’s most persistent problems. The series, in-depth and unfiltered in its depiction of a man's life journey, both his triumphs and setbacks, offers unprecedented access to Gates as he pursues unique solutions to some of the world’s most complex problems with the same level of optimism, curiosity, and fervor that inspired his original vision for Microsoft. Interweaving these endeavors with personal moments, Inside Bill’s Brain draws on interviews with Bill and Melinda Gates in addition to their friends, family, and partners in philanthropy and business, creating an innovative and revealing portrait of a man who, after changing the world, might just change the way others see it. Jeff Dunham: Beside Himself (Netflix, September 24) - Ventriloquist and renowned comedy star Jeff Dunham talks parenting and pink eye, all the while skewering political correctness as only he can, in his second Netflix Original stand-up comedy special, Jeff Dunham: Beside Himself. Filmed at the American Airlines Center in his hometown, Dallas, Texas, Dunham is literally beside himself with his posse of unusual suspects: Walter, Bubba J, Peanut, José Jalapeño on a Stick, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, and newest addition Larry - the high strung, chain-smoking, on-again, off-again personal advisor to the President. Birders (Netflix, September 25) - A diverse number of migratory birds travel thousands of miles back and forth across the US-Mexico border each year. They have no regard for man-made laws and barriers. Dedicated Birders on both sides of the border, and all sides of the political spectrum, share a passion for these creatures and for their perilous journey. The documentary short Birders, directed by Otilia Portillo Padua (Diario a Tres Voces), celebrates those who observe, record, monitor and fight for the rights and habitats of these species, demonstrating another way to think about the passage for survival that is migration. Skylines (Netflix, September 27) - In Frankfurt, a young and gifted hip-hop producer gets the chance of a lifetime when he signs with Skyline Records. But the worlds of music, organized crime and high finance collide when the label owner’s gangster brother returns from exile to claim his share. Baby: Season 2 (Netflix, October 18) - A coming-of-age story that explores the unseen lives of Roman high schoolers. Loosely inspired by a true story, the series follows a group of Parioli teenagers as they defy society in their search for identity and independence against the backdrop of forbidden love, family pressures, and shared secrets. Little Monsters (Hulu, October 11) - Dave (Alexander England), a washed-up musician, volunteers to chaperone his nephew’s kindergarten field trip after taking a shine to the plucky schoolteacher, Miss Caroline (Lupita Nyong'o). Dave’s intentions are complicated by the presence of world-famous child entertainer and competitor for Miss Caroline’s affections, Teddy McGiggle (Josh Gad). One thing none of them bargained for, however, is a sudden zombie outbreak, from which Dave and Miss Caroline must protect the children. Looking for Alaska (Hulu, October 18) - The series centers around teenager Miles “Pudge” Halter (Charlie Plummer), as he enrolls in boarding school to try to gain a deeper perspective on life. He falls in love with Alaska Young (Kristine Froseth), and finds a group of loyal friends. But after an unexpected tragedy, Miles and his close friends attempt to make sense of what they’ve been through. Castle Rock Season 2 (Hulu, October 23) - A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The fictional Maine town of Castle Rock has figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half, IT and Needful Things, as well as novella The Body and numerous short stories such as Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption are either set there or contain references to Castle Rock. Castle Rock is an original suspense/thriller — a first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories. Modern Love (Amazon Prime Video, October 18) - An unlikely friendship. A lost love resurfaced. A marriage at its turning point. A date that might not have been a date. An unconventional new family. These are unique stories about the joys and tribulations of love, each inspired by a real-life personal essay from the beloved New York Times column "Modern Love." - Apple TV+ is set to launch on November 1 for a monthly subscription price of $4.99. - A current Amazon Prime subscription costs $119 per year or $13 per month. Likewise, Prime Instant Video is available as a standalone service for $9 per month. - A current Netflix subscription starts at $13 per month for HD streaming and $16 per month for Ultra HD streaming. - A current Hulu subscription starts at $6 per month with commercials.
