‘The Walking Dead’ 4.03 Recap: “You Breathe and You Risk Your Life”

At the conclusion of last week’s episode of ‘The Walking Dead’, Tyreese, Rick, Daryl and Carol had come across the burnt bodies of Karen and David. As this week’s episode begins, the once-passive Tyreese gets so upset over the deaths that he and Rick start slugging it out. Rick busts up his hand, but Tyreese gets a nice shiner on his left eye.

With the flu-like virus spreading quickly through the prison, a decision is made to quarantine all the sick in one cell block, and to isolate the young and those most vulnerable in another. Beth and baby Judith wind up with the healthy group, while Sasha and Glenn, both whom have gotten sick, wind up in quarantine.

At the council meeting, Daryl points out that they’ve already raided all the known drug stores in the area and no medicines remain. However, Hershel knows of a nearby veterinarian clinic that may not have been touched. Daryl puts together a group to join him on his trek out to the clinic. His final roster includes Michonne, Bob Stuckey and Tyreese – who only agrees to go if Carol promises to check in on Sasha.

Hershel gets the idea to make elderberry tea to help alleviate the flu symptoms, so he heads outside the prison (with Carl joining for protection) to gather some berries. Returning to the prison, Hershel decides to enter the quarantine block in order to attend to the sick. Maggie isn’t happy about it, but Hershel explains that they’re all living on borrow time, and it’s what they chose to do with that time that is the most important.

On the drive to the vet clinic, Daryl turns on the radio and everyone in the car hears a mysterious voice on the other end. It’s hard to make out what the person is saying, other than that it sounds like a male voice and I’m pretty sure I heard the word “alive.” The radio is quickly forgotten, however, when the group encounters thousands of zombies on the road blocking their way to the clinic. Daryl throws the car into reverse, but it gets hung up on a pile of Walkers behind them. Everyone gets out of the car to take their chances in hand-to-hand combat… all except Tyreese, who has to be yelled at by Bob before he’s able to spring into action. Once he does, he disappears into a mob of zombies while swinging an axe as fast as he can to kill them.

Daryl, Michonne and Bob make their way into the woods, believing that Tyreese didn’t make it. But as a few Walkers come their way, Tyreese comes out from behind them, weary and blood-splattered, but otherwise unharmed. Comic book fans may want to note that Tyreese gave us two nods toward the comics this week: one where he duked it out with Rick, and the other where he took on a mob of Walkers and killed them all. Of course, the comic had Tyreese in different scenarios (the Walker fight in the comics took place at the prison), but it’s a nice nod to fans, who almost certainly knew the result when he disappeared into that swarm of Walkers.

Back at the prison, Rick has gone into full Gil Grissom mode, as he checks out some clues near where the burnt bodies were found and seems to come to a revelation about what happened. Later, when he sees Carol in the prison yard (whom he saved from a group of Walkers outside the prison fences earlier in the day), he asks her point-blank if she killed Karen and David. Carol matter-of-factly replies, “Yes.”

This week’s episode is pretty thin on Walkers and gore… until Daryl, Tyreese and the gang run into the swarm on the road, which more than provides fans with their money’s worth. The big revelation this week is that Carol admitted guilt in the deaths of Karen and David… but did she really do it? My guess is that she’s covering for young Lizzie, who probably killed them with the knife Carol gave her (everyone remember that?) and then helped Lizzie cover up the crime by dragging the bodies outside and starting a BBQ. Anyone else have theories?

My money was on Lizzie from the beginning, I just couldn’t connect that with her dragging the bodies away. I hadn’t thought of someone else helping her. Interesting.
