Videogame Releases: Week of September 4th, 2011

Now this is more like it. Three sweet looking games in one week? Hell yeah. PlayStation owners get their hands on a must-have, and every high-def system gets a pair of absolutely stellar-looking titles. It almost makes up for the temperature outside being so low that I have to wear a hoodie. Almost.

Warhammer 40000: Space Marine (360, PC, PS3)

As a fan of the ‘Warhammer’ universe, I’m pretty psyched for this one. Plus, it looks downright awesome. It’s gorgeous and gory and all sorts of wonderful, just like a ’40K’ game should be. And why not? It’s made by Relic, the company behind the ‘Dawn of War’ RTS games and ‘Homeworld’, which was a favorite of mine back in the day.

The ‘Warhammer’ universe is the inspiration behind many of the games out today. ‘StarCraft’ and ‘Warcraft’ owe much to the ‘Warhammer’ table top games, as do ‘Gears of War’ with its chainsaw guns and big bulky space marines with attitude problems. It’s a badass universe and this looks to be a badass game. So go buy it already.

Dead Island (360, PC, PS3)

A lot of people are going to be seriously disappointed with what ‘Dead Island’ has to offer. I’m not saying that it’s a bad game or anything. Reviews seem to be pretty good thus far. Metacritic has it at a 72. But since game review scores are mostly worthless, I wouldn’t get too excited about that.

The real issue here is that the trailer was just too damn good. It’s seriously the most entertaining and emotionally-touching game trailer ever, and no game can live up to that. Especially not this open-world game that doesn’t actually have much to do with the trailer at all. Game companies really have to stop trying to promise drama and emotional attachment when they know that they’ll never deliver.

Resistance 3 (PS3)

Do you own a PS3? Buy ‘Resistance 3’. It’s one of those exclusive titles that you need to play. Why? So you can, without playing ‘Gears of War 3’, argue which game is better in forums. The battle between exclusives, solely to justify your choice of console, is on!

The game itself seems pretty boss. If you liked the first two, you’ll surely enjoy this one. New to the series is Move support, if you feel like throwing away some cash on a peripheral that will sit collecting dust with your Wii. If you feel like blowing even more money, it does 3D too.
