Videogame Releases: Week of September 18th, 2011

The big videogame news this week is that Xbox owners can finally get their hands on ‘Gears of War 3’. This one’s a required purchase whether you like the genre or not. Read the EULA on your 360 if you don’t believe me!

Gears of War 3 (360)

The story is rubbish, the characters (aside from Coletrain) are forgettable and interchangeable, and the design scheme is derivative and unoriginal. But that stuff isn’t what gaming is about. Gaming is about, well, playing a game. That’s one thing that the ‘Gears of War’ franchise does well.

If you’ve played a previous ‘Gears’ game, you’re not going to be surprised with the third installment. You play an angry bald guy who, along with his angry bald buddies and Coletrain, wants to kill aliens. Then you kill aliens. There’s a new online mode that sounds like it’s at least part tower defense, which should be a lot of fun as well.

Assuming that the formula hasn’t taken a dramatic turn, you’re going to be playing with some of the most satisfying guns around, nice tight controls, and as good of a cover mechanic as you’ll find anywhere. ‘Gears of War 3’ is a necessary purchase.

Child of Eden (PS3)

It’s been out for the Xbox 360 for a while, but ‘Child of Eden’ has finally made its way to the PS3 complete with support for Move. The game, created by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, might not be for everyone, but some diehards out there won’t be able to get enough.
