Videogame Releases: Week of January 16, 2011

Ports and sequels abound on the videogame release list this week, but that’s not actually a bad thing. It’s an especially good week for PS3 owners, who get a little of everything.

Little Big Planet 2 (PS3)

It’s just so hard not to love this amazingly cute and whimsical game. The first ‘Little Big Planet’ was flawed, but that didn’t stop it from being one of the biggest games on the PS3. The second looks like it’s going to follow in the footsteps of the first, but with added creation tools, better gameplay, and more great music.

Mass Effect 2 (PS3)

The second ‘Mass Effect’ game received a great deal of praise – not only for its storytelling, but also its improved combat system that moves things along a bit more quickly. Now PlayStation owners can finally get their hands on it. With ‘Mass Effect 3’ coming out at the end of the year, you can bet this one’s going to be huge.

Mindjack (360, PS3)

Mind-what? What-jack? Beats the hell out of me! It’s a shooter/RPG game in the style of ‘Deus Ex’, ‘Alpha Protocol’, and ‘Mass Effect 2’. It was developed by no one of note, though composer Tsuyoshi Sekito is pretty hip. Give it a rent if it’s a genre you’re into. You could probably do a lot worse.

Plants vs. Zombies (DS)

This is one of the most interesting and original tower defense games to come out of the recent genre explosion. It’s no surprise that Popcap can make an addictive game, but to capture the casual and hardcore crowd so well is impressive. Go out and get the game that Luke has been playing since October.

    • Dated nothing. LBP is an essential PS3 game that I think gets overlooked far too often in favor of more conventional games like ‘Uncharted.’

I haven’t played the second game yet, but it seems like they’re trying to be a bit edgier with it and I’m not sure how I feel about that. The first though, is awesome to be sure.
