Mid-Week Poll: Which 3D PS3 Game Should I Buy?

Since beginning my foray into 3D home theater, most of my attention has been focused on 3D Blu-rays. I think it’s about time that I tested some 3D videogames as well. The only problem is that I’m not much of a gamer. So, I’ll need your help in choosing the 3D game(s) I should buy.

I do have one 3D game already. Over the weekend, I picked up a copy of ‘MotorStorm: Apocalypse’. But that’s just one title, and I’d like some variety. It seems to me that racing games (like ‘MotorStorm’) and First Person Shooters would make the most natural fit for 3D, but I could be wrong about that.

I compiled the following poll options from the list of 3D PS3 titles found on Wikipedia. If I’m missing anything important, be sure to tell me in the comments. Because the PlayStation Store is still down at the time of this writing, I’ve eliminated any titles that are only available by download. I also don’t have much interest in sports games, so I’ve removed most of those from the voting options as well.

As I already said, I’m not much of a gamer. A lot of the games available in 3D are sequels within franchises that I’m not particularly familiar with. I’ll need a game that I can pick up easily and understand even if I haven’t played the previous entries.

I have no interest in multi-player or online play. I’m also not a fan of games that are overly complicated, like RPGs that make you spends months building a character from nothing. I like mindless games where I can either drive really fast or run around blowing stuff up.

It’s a given that 3D is the primary selling point, or these titles wouldn’t be on the list. However, I’m also looking for something that’s good in other areas: gameplay, graphics, a decent story, etc.

So, help me out. You can vote for multiple titles if you’d like.

Motorstorm Rift 3D and Apocalypse should be on the list, also WipeOut and Super Stardust HD are going to be free as part of the “Welcome Back” program, so definitely pick those up; the 3D is very nice in both. Finally, once PSN is up there are lots of demos available in 3D including Mortal Kombat and Killzone 3.

I got the graphic from a Google search. I can’t claim to have created it.

I’m not necessarily going to bind myself to buying what people vote for. I just want suggestions. 🙂

  2. People love bagging on the Dynasty Warriors series for being essentially the same game over and over again. I get where they’re coming from, but it’s a fun game! I have no idea how the 3D will work out, but if you like killing tons of dudes it’s worth playing. It’s also super easy to get into.

Crysis might be a good pickup as well. I haven’t played the second, but the first was a solid shooter with some of the sexiest graphics known to man. If that translates to 3D, you’re in luck.

  3. I’m not a big gamer either. I have a lot of systems, but only play occasionally, and then usually NES or SNES. Also, I have not nor do I intend to jump on the 3D bandwagon as long as I can avoid it. That said, I voted Mortal Kombat, my fiance and I are loving the shit out of this game. It plays and feels like the classic games and has a great deal of replay value and gameplay options. My thumb hasn’t been this calloused since Super Mario Brothers 3 first came out. As for the 3Diosity of it, no idea, hopefully someone else can chime in on that part.

Motorstorm: Apocalypse is the most wow-inducing 3D PS# game I’ve played. Super Stardust HD is a close second, and believe it or not de Blob 2 is impressive.

The graphics and 3D in MotorStorm: Apocalypse are terrific, but the aliasing is really out of control. I thought modern videogames had basically licked that problem? I guess not.

It’s the trade-off for the massive, dynamic tracks and 16-racers fields, I suppose. Been playing it online (in 3D!) now that PSN is back and love it even more thanks to the CoD-like perks and level progression.

Killzone seems to be a favorite. I’m definitely going to have to try out that demo as soon as the PlayStation Store comes back online.

I am told Killzone 3 is the one to play for the mean time.

Be sure to check out Uncharted 3 in the Fall when it comes down.

I just found this site and am not poking through to see what you think of 3D gaming, this was the first post I found.

If you are still at this, taking suggestions of 3D games to try… since you already have the new Motorstorm, I’d suggest Crysis 2 and Prince of Persia above the rest. I have those, Killzone3, Mortal Kombat, Wipeout HD, Motorstorm 3d Rift, and rented GT5, Call of Duty and a handfull of others.
Killzone3’s visuals are great, but the drop in resolution when playing in 3d is terrible, I go between 3D and 2D every few times I play it again and really, though I love the depth, the picture is degraded enough that it’s almost a better game in 2D. Of course that’s my opinion.
Crysis 2 does not seem to loose as much clarity in my eyes. Prince of Persia I have only started, and so far it looks very very clean, but that’s probably because the source is Playstation 2 upconverted. For 3D depth, it actually looks very nice and makes me love that old game again.
    Good luck
