Labor Day Weekend Movies: I Ain’t Afraid of No Catacombs

Yes, new movies are opening this Labor Day weekend – but who cares about those when you can go see ‘Ghostbusters’ on the big screen instead?

That’s right, prior to the Sept. 16th release of the new ‘Ghostbusters’ 4K remastered Blu-ray sets (you can purchase the two movies together or individually), Sony is releasing the new transfer for the first movie on the big screen to commemorate the film’s 30th anniversary. I’ve already got my Amazon pre-order for the Blu-rays in place, but I’m still very tempted to see ‘Ghostbusters‘ this weekend. Being that it’s one of the very first movies I remember seeing on the silver screen, I want to experience it that way again 30 years later. Distributed to 775 screens, check your local listings to see if it’s playing in a theater near you.

Of the weekend’s new sure-to-be-flops, Relativity Media has the widest release with ‘The November Man‘. Pierce Brosnan goes from James Bond to James Boring in this generic spy thriller. While trying to escape from Russia’s shady presidential hopeful, Brosnan’s screen wife is shot and killed by a sniper that turns out to be a former pupil. With a broken heart, he’s determined to end the lives of everyone responsible, as well as uncover the nasty truth that will end the future president’s political career. Former Bond Girl Olga Kurylenko co-stars.

Universal’s Found-Footage horror thriller ‘As Above So Below‘ seems to channel both ‘[Rec]’ and ‘The Descent’. A bunch of no-names star as a team of explorers who head into the catacombs beneath Paris, only to discover something they wish they hadn’t. From the director of the ‘[Rec]’ remake ‘Quarantine‘, the film could go either way. Enter these catacombs at your own risk.

On the indie front, IFC films is releasing the dramedy ‘Last Weekend‘. Patricia Clarkson stars as a somewhat neurotic and controlling mother who invites her two twenty-something sons to join her and their father at the family lake house for a weekend. This confrontational not-so-relaxing getaway will cause each member of the family to assess their lives and their familial relationships.

Labor Day weekend is typically a dry time at the box office. Since both new wide releases feature R ratings, it will be interesting to see which movie nabs the number one spot. Will ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ continue to hold onto the lead?

  1. Very, very jealous. I want to see ‘Ghostbusters’ on the big screen too! I’m as old as the movie, so I, eh, have never seen it on the big screen. I was fortunate enough to see ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ two years ago while visiting NYC, but no such luck this time around.

I’m not sure if Cineplex is in Europse at all, but hear in North America they have something every winter called The Great Digital Film festival. Where they screen cult classics and old blockbusters on the big screen. One Saturday afternoon they played all 3 Back To The Future movies back to back. It was effin’ amazing.
