Videogame Releases: Week of March 27th, 2011

This is a massive week for videogames. You can pick up a new WWE game, a new NASCAR game, and the latest Tiger Woods golf game. That’s all well and good, but this is also the week that the 3DS debuts on U.S. shores.

Nintendo 3DS

It’s been far too long since the release of a new system – and no, the PSPgo doesn’t count. The Nintendo 3DS is a breath of fresh air in the handheld gaming scene. It’s so full of promise that it’s hard not to get excited. Even if you don’t care for 3D, the new graphics, bigger screen and lineup of announced games look pretty impressive.

One important thing that the 3DS has over most systems is a good launch titles. ‘Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars‘, ‘Super Street Fighter IV‘ and ‘Pilotwings Resort‘ are definitely worth getting pumped about.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters (360, PS3, Wii)

Golf games are generally pretty iterative. Though you’ll notice a big difference over a five year span, they don’t change a lot year to year. ‘PGA Tour 12’ is a little different, since it’s the first time that The Masters tournament will be featured.

WWE All-Stars (360, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii)

‘All-Stars’ is an arcade-y game featuring the biggest wrestlers of today and some of the best wrestlers from the past. In addition to the guys like Sgt. Slaughter who show up in every wrestling game, Macho Man Randy Savage and Jake “The Snake” Roberts are also playable. Both are a bit surprising; Jake is one of the saddest stories in wrestling, and Macho Man has an extremely strange relationship with the WWE. If you’re a wrestling fan, this might be one worth picking up for the nostalgia alone.

  1. WWE All Stars is a big pass for me. they call it the greatest roster ever, yet it has people like Drew McIntyre and Kofi Kingston, yet COUNTLESS legends from the 90’s, 80’s, and 70’s are missing. there’s a huge glut of DLC, but yeah, that bumps up the game price a lot.

I disagree w/ you on the 3DS launch quality. the majority of the games are getting critically lambasted. Pilotwings got called glorified pack-in material (OUCH), while the only games getting good reviews are Ghost Recon (exclusive, which is good), Nintendogs (evil evil game), and SF4 (port!). Nintendo needs a good PROPERTY to help launch a system, like a Star Fox, Metroid, Zelda, Mario, Kirby, shit like that. guilt trip dogs and pilotwings using the ridiculous Mii creations is wimpy at best.
