Monday’s TV Madness featured another very close race. There’s chance that things could change right before this article is posted, but as I’m writing this, John Locke leads Eric Northman by one vote. We’ll see if his lead holds up. In the other match-up, Worf easily handled gangster extraordinaire, Al Capone.

The five-year odyssey of ‘Chuck’ ended its run this past Friday with a two-part series finale that, if perhaps not an artistic pinnacle for the show, at the very least brought things together with a satisfying note of closure.

As some of my recent complaining probably makes clear, ‘Chuck’ doesn’t always come together as well as it should. However, when it does, it’s one of the most purely entertaining shows on TV. This past Friday gave us the penultimate episode before the series finale, and fortunately it was a really good one.

While ‘Chuck’ is certainly no stranger to being meta, the show turned almost bizarrely so this past Friday with a guest appearance from former ‘10‘ star and 1970s poster pin-up girl Bo Derek… playing herself… as a spy. The strangest part of all this: We’re supposed to believe that Bo Derek is still a sex symbol that anyone in the audience would care about or be impressed by.

The pendulum of my feelings for this final season of ‘Chuck’ continues to swing. I don’t know if this Friday’s episode really saw a big increase in quality, or if I was just more receptive to being entertained by it that night. In either case, this one really clicked with me.

Have I been too hard on ‘Chuck’ lately? Last week, I was feeling pretty negative about the recent Christmas-themed episode, but honestly, it wasn’t really that bad. Maybe I was just in a sour mood when I watched it? Whatever the case, this past Friday’s follow-up episode wasn’t exactly a huge step up in quality or anything, but I found myself enjoying it a little more and remembering why I watch this show in the first place.

I’ll give the writers and producers of this season of ‘Chuck’ one thing: They seem to be at least trying to entertain the show’s fans. They’ve brought in fun guest stars, brought back fan-favorite characters, and have thrown in plenty of silliness that should make for a good time. Unfortunately, trying does not necessarily mean succeeding, and last week’s Christmas-themed episode is another uneven, ungainly mess.
