Principal photography is officially underway in Wilmington, NC for ‘Piranha 3DD’, with ‘Feast‘ director John Gulager at the helm. ‘Piranha 3DD’ (pronounced “Three Double D”) is of course a sequel to last year’s ‘Piranha 3D‘, the surprisingly critically acclaimed remake of Roger Corman’s cult horror flick ‘Piranha‘.

Instead of attacking Lake Victoria’s unsuspecting Spring Breakers again, our fierce school of unfriendly prehistoric fish will get into summer’s most popular attraction, The Big Wet Water Park.

Although shooting is already underway, little information has been revealed about the movie’s ensemble cast. While ‘Piranha 3D’ featured known actors Ving Rhames, Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Adam Scott, Christopher Lloyd and Richard Dreyfuss, the cast of ‘3DD’ holds mostly no-names so far. The announced cast includes Danielle Panabaker from ‘The Crazies‘ remake, Matt Bush from ‘Adventureland‘, Chris Zylka from the upcoming ‘Spider-Man’ reboot, Meagan Tandy from ‘Unstoppable‘ and a handful of other names that will really leave you drawing a blank. David Koechner, the familiar face of Champ Kind in ‘Anchorman‘, is easily the most well-known cast member. However, Dimension Films says that more casting will be announced soon.

Much like the rest of the world, I was surprised to see ‘Piranha 3D’ pull off a 74% favorable critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But once I saw it, I knew exactly why. ‘Piranha 3D’ didn’t get rave reviews for its technical merit nor its brilliant screenplay; ‘Piranha 3D’ received a 74% rating for being a gruesomely disgusting crowd-pleaser, and for being the terribly awesome cult flick that ‘Snakes on a Plane‘ failed to be.

I enjoyed ‘Piranha 3D’. With that said, I’m wary of the direction of the franchise. I’m usually always up for a good sequel, but when the sequel to a well-received movie can’t get a solid actor, I begin to worry. Even if ‘3DD’ turns out to be a good time, it’s ‘3DDD’ and ‘3DDDD’ that I fear.
