Now Playing: Disney’s Mixed Bag of Interplanetary Goodies

Now Playing: Disney’s Mixed Bag of Interplanetary Goodies

It’s difficult to explain how awesome ‘John Carter’ is, but it’s even harder to get others amped up to see the movie. I blame the marketing. No trailer or television spot does anything positive for the film. There’s nothing enticing in the advertising campaign, which makes the movie look like a CG-laden cook cutter space Western, or worse, a remake of ‘Attack of the Clones’. But I promise that if you make the leap of faith and give the movie a shot, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

The Trailer Park: Always the Sucker

The Trailer Park: Always the Sucker

Call them generic, conventional or routine, but I still like them. Sure, they’re not the best actors around, but what they’re good at they meet head-on and deliver with unique charm. I might excuse their movies as guilty pleasures on occasion, but honestly, I feel no guilt whatsoever and take complete pleasure sitting back and enjoying two hours of distraction.

Posterizing: Mondo ‘Redemption’

Posterizing: Mondo ‘Redemption’

Last time on Posterizing, I lamented the fact that I wasn’t able to purchase a Tom Whalen poster of Disney’s short ‘The Lonesome Ghosts’ before it sold out. This time around? Rejoicing! I finally got my hands on a limited edition Mondo poster print by Tom Whalen. First, let’s take a look at new posters from ‘John Carter’, ‘Brave’ and ‘Frankenweenie’.

R.I.P. Ralph McQuarrie

R.I.P. Ralph McQuarrie

The creative arts felt another significant loss over the weekend with the passing of Ralph McQuarrie, the famed production illustrator who helped conceive much of the look of the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy. He was 82-years-old.

Weekend Box Office: Eco-Friendly ‘Lorax’ Cleans Up

Weekend Box Office: Eco-Friendly ‘Lorax’ Cleans Up

If anyone had told me in advance that a heavy-handed animated flick about deforestation and evil greedy corporations would open to more than $70 million, I would have called them a fool. There’s no way that such a movie could do that well, or so I thought.

Weekend Roundtable: Who Should Host the Oscars Next Year?

Weekend Roundtable: Who Should Host the Oscars Next Year?

After the complete disaster that was this past Sunday’s Academy Awards telecast, it’s clear that the Academy needs to take major steps to revamp the ceremony. It can no longer fall back on dragging Billy Crystal out of retirement when other plans fall through. His hosting this year was simply dreadful. With that in mind, let’s use today’s Roundtable to offer our suggestions for people who might make better hosts next year.

Now Playing: The Worst Found-Footage Movie of All Time

Now Playing: The Worst Found-Footage Movie of All Time

By now, I’ve made my opinions on the found-footage genre more than clear. As much as I loathe these movies, I haven’t hated one as much as ‘Project X’ until now, and I doubt that any future release will ever top this as the worst found-footage movie of all time.

Now Playing: A Cartoon That Actually Validates One of Fox News’ Wild Claims

Now Playing: A Cartoon That Actually Validates One of Fox News’ Wild Claims

On my Facebook profile page, in the section that asks for political preferences, mine says, “Who cares? What movie is opening this weekend?” When it comes time to vote, that’s when I pay attention to politics… but that’s it. Working full-time in entertainment, I don’t have time to follow every slanted news story out there. However, the two things occasionally cross paths and I have to pay attention. Such is the case with ‘The Lorax’. Lou Dobbs has called the film anti-industrial Leftist propaganda. I don’t care about the Leftist aspect of his comment, but the anti-industry bit is 100% spot-on.

Weekend Movies: Two of the Worst Films of Their Genres

Weekend Movies: Two of the Worst Films of Their Genres

Both of this week’s big openers fail at doing what they’re meant to do. The animated family flick is chock full of less-than-entertaining content and the R-rated comedy isn’t funny in the slightest. Mark this up as another weekend to catch up on the Oscar winners.

The Trailer Park: America, F**k Yeah!

The Trailer Park: America, F**k Yeah!

As many politicians have proven as of late, if you don’t screw up American history for your own personal gain, then you’re not being patriotic enough. Trailers for three new comedies test this train of thought in some rather offensive ways. Be warned, these are red-band trailers.
