High-Def Digest's Must Own 3-D Classics on Blu-rayAs CES 2017 saw the first year without any new 3-D television sets in development, one may fear that the 3-D Blu-ray format is going the way of the dinosaurs. Many of us took the 3-D plunge and purchased top of the line sets in order to appreciate the eye-popping effects in the comfort of our own home. For the time being, it would appear that 3-D televisions are being phased out, but the good news is that there is plenty of great content out there for fans who love their entertainment in three dimensions. [teaser]The new big blockbusters all have terrific 3-D releases, but it's important to take a look back at the films that got the 3-D ball rolling.[/teaser] Here is our list of the classic 3-D Blu-rays every collector should have in their home: 3-D Rarities Most people think that 3-D has been around only since the 1950s, but it dates back much further. The first 3-D stereographic footage and exhibition date back all the way to 1915! Amazingly enough, a lot of this footage survives today and the great folks at 3-D Film Archive (You're going to hear a lot about these guys in this article) and Flicker Alley have pulled together a collection of short films shot between 1922 and the 1950s. While some of these shorts are in understandably rough shape, the 3-D effect is impressive, to say the least. Not only is '3-D Rarities' a wonderful exhibition of short films in 3-D, it's also an important history lesson in filmmaking! Where else are you going to see Charlie Chaplin's Tramp (in this case an impersonator) toss a pie in your face in 3-D? House of Wax (1953) 'Bwana Devil' may have been the film to whet audiences' appetites for 3-D movies, but it was this Vincent Price horror classic directed by André De Toth that got the craze rolling in 1953. The film is a study in mood and atmosphere and helped propel Price to leading man status for horror pictures for generations. Terror and thrills leap out of your screen with numerous sight gags that create a terrific 3-D illusion as Price's Professor Jarrod gets revenge on those who wronged him by turning them into wax sculptures in his twisted museum of the macabre. The Blu-ray is terrific with exceptional video and audio. A true 3-D fan's delight that must be a part of your collection. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) Another horror classic comes roaring back to life in 3-D! This 1954 monster movie classic directed by the late great Jack Arnold and starring Richard Carlson and Julie Adams features the titular Gillman slaying unsuspecting trespassers in depth of the Amazon. Above water and below, this is a beautiful restoration effort for a black and white monster picture. The first time that fossilized hand protrudes from the screen, you'll want to reach out and try to shake hands! The sequel 'Revenge of the Creature,' has as of yet to be released on 3-D. Fingers crossed we get to see Jon Agar swim around with the Gillman at Sea World in 3-D very soon! Kiss Me Kate (1953) Believe it or not but not every single 3-D film released during the 50s heyday of 3-D was a monster movie or featured a murderous Vincent Price! George Sidney's adaptation Cole Porter's musical broadway show 'Kiss Me Kate' proved to be a perfectly entertaining and musical wonder to behold in three dimensions! Delightfully entertaining and full of numerous out-of-the-screen moments make this an absolute must-own 3-D song and dance wonder. You may think you've seen 'Kiss Me Kate,' but you haven't enjoyed the full effect of the film until you've seen it as it was meant to be seen. Now pull out those glasses and give this colorfully infectious flick a whirl! It Came From Outer Space (1953) Granted, not every single 3-D film produced in the 1950s heyday were science fiction and horror films, but a bunch of them were! Jack Arnold's 'It Came From Outer Space' was one of the best in the group. Not simply a piece of sci-fi B-movie schlock, 'It Came From Outer Space' is a thoughtful contemplation about humanity - while working in some 3-D thrills and chills. Featuring an out of this world restoration by the 3-D Film Archive, the picture and audio quality make for a picture-perfect 3-D experience. Do not pass this one up! The Mad Magician (1954) Made a quick year after the break-out hit 'House of Wax,' Vincent Price stars in this pseudo-remake about a wronged magician who dispatches his enemies with his deadly illusions. The plot may be a bit familiar, but this is the film that cemented Vincent Price as the go-to source for horror thrills and chills. Director John Brahm makes smart use of 3-D through inventive camera angles and some impressive tricks to give this black and white thriller a little extra edge. This 3-D Blu-ray delivers all the goods and includes the two hilarious 3-D 3 Stooges shorts 'Pardon My Backfire' and 'Spooks!' making it a terrific three-dimensional package! Jaws 3-D (1983) The 1950s may have been known for the 3-D craze, but the format never really went away. By the time the 1980s came around, 3-D was in full swing again and 'Jaws 3-D' was front and center. Unrelated to any of the previous sequels, fans were treated to the titular toothy shark terrorizing Sea World (sound familiar?). While this plot shares more than a few similarities to 'Return of the Creature,' the 3-D schlocky images of a shark floating towards the screen or a severed arm is a hilarious delight. Fully restored in 3-D, this Blu-ray is the only way to experience the terror! GOG (1954) A smart and crafty thriller, 'GOG' takes a stab at man's technological advancements where the creations designed to save us could well be our end. Not only is 'GOG' a well-made little science fiction yarn, it sports some impressive 3-D visuals courtesy of the multi-armed robotic monstrosity Magog. This is perhaps one of the finest vintage 3-D restorations to make its way onto 3-D Blu-ray. 3-D Film Archive did an incredible job restoring this film giving it a new life with bright bold colors and and incredible use of the 3-D effects. World War II in 3-D This History Channel documentary may not be a thriller or a romantic musical, but what it does do is showcase the importance of 3-D photography during World War II. From Nazi propaganda films to Allied forces invasion preparations, this Blu-ray features some incredible 3-D moments and proves to be an impressive educational experience! Dial M for Murder (1954) One of Hitchcock's finest thrillers also manages to make a splash in 3-D. Unfortunately, the restoration effort for this presentation isn't quite as good as one would hope - but when those scissors come out, you'll be happy to have those glasses on! Again, it's not ideal, but considering the age of the film and the fact that this was an early release on the format - this is still a worthwhile addition to the collection! 3-D may not be for everyone, but for enthusiasts, it provides a unique and infectious viewing experience. Thankfully there are plenty of great classic 3-D films out there with more on the way. With so many great titles out there, it's hard to keep a list like this to only ten, but these flicks are a great starting point for building an impressive collection of classic 3-D movies on Blu-ray.Posted Wed Mar 8, 2017 at 09:00 AM PST by: -

Order the Blu-ray 'The Climber' (May 16) - After shooting cult favourites Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula in Europe, Joe Dallesandro spent much of the seventies making movies on the continent. In France he worked with auteurs like Louis Malle and Walerian Borowczyk, and in Italy he starred in all manner of genre fare from poliziotteschi (Savage Three, Season for Assassins) to nunsploitation (Killer Nun). The Climber follows in the tradition of gangster classics such as The Public Enemy and Scarface as it charts the rise and inevitable fall of small-time smuggler Aldo (Dallesandro). Beaten and abandoned by the local gang boss after he tries to skim off some profits for himself, Aldo forms his own group of misfits in order to exact revenge... Written and directed by Pasquale Squitieri (Gang War in Naples, I Am the Law), The Climber is a prime example of Italian crime cinema a high-octane action-thriller full of brawls, fistfights, shootouts and explosions! The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, an Italian PCM mono and alternative English soundtrack, and supplements will include: - Little Joe s Adventures in Europe, a brand-new interview with Joe Dallesandro on his numerous European film appearances during the 1970s and early 1980s- Reversible sleeve with original and newly commissioned artwork by Chris Malbon- FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Booklet featuring new writing on the film by Roberto Curti, author of Italian Crime Filmography, 1968-1980 Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $39.95. Order the Blu-ray 'Cops vs Thugs' (May 23) - Considered by many to be director Kinji Fukasaku's greatest single-film achievement in the yakuza genre, Cops vs Thugs was made at the height of popularity of Toei Studios' jitsuroku boom: realistic, modern crime movies based on true stories taken from contemporary headlines. Returning to the screen after completing their Battles Without Honor and Humanity series together, Fukasaku joined forces once again with screenwriter Kazuo Kasahara, composer Toshiaki Tsushima and star Bunta Sugawara to create one of the crowning achievements of his career, and a hard-boiled classic which is still ranked as one of the best Japanese films of the 1970's. It's 1963 in the southern Japanese city of Kurashima, and tough-as-nails detective Kuno (Sugawara) oversees a detente between the warring Kawade and Ohara gangs. Best friends with Ohara lieutenant Hirotani (Hiroki Matsukata), he understands that there are no clear lines in the underworld, and that everything is colored a different shade of gray. But when random violence interrupts the peace and an ambitious, by-the-books lieutenant (Tatsuo Umemiya) comes to town, Kuno's fragile alliance begins to crumble. Greedy bosses and politicians alike seize the opportunity to wipe out their enemies, and Kuno faces the painful choice of pledging allegiance to his badge and keeping a promise to his brother. Echoing the great crime films of Sidney Lumet and Jean-Pierre Melville, in Fukasaku's world, there's no honor among thieves or lawmen alike, and the only thing that matters is personal honor and duty among friends. Kasahara's shattering screenplay and Fukasaku's dynamic direction support an all-star, ensemble cast to create one of the most exciting, and deeply moving films about cops and criminals ever made. The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, a Japanese mono soundtrack, and supplements will include: - Audio commentary by film scholar Tom Mes- New video interview with film scholar & Fukasaku biographer Sadao Yamane- Sympathy for the Underdog, a new visual essay on Fukasaku's career by Marc Walkow- Trailer- Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Ian MacEwan- FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated collector s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Patrick Macias, Marc Walkow and a newly-translated essay by screenwriter Kazuo Kasahara Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $39.95. Order the Blu-ray 'Evil Ed' (May 30) - WHEN HIS MIND BLOWS, ANYTHING GOES! A blood-soaked love letter to the splatter films of the 80s, video rental favourite Evil Ed returns in a brand-new Special EDition featuring an extended cut of the feature and hours of stomach-churning bonus features! Mild-mannered film technician Edward enjoys his job. That is, until he finds himself transferred from his regular post to the Splatter and Gore department , where he s forced to edit hours upon hours of grisly video nasty footage. Traumatized by the onscreen violence, Ed starts to lose his grip on reality with ghastly (and bloody) consequences... Owing a debt to films such as The Evil Dead, Re-animator and the early splatter classics of Peter Jackson, Evil Ed is a veritable smorgasbord of flying limbs, exploding heads, busty babes and creepy creatures! The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, Original Stereo and 5.1 Audio Options, and supplements will include: - Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Graham Humphreys- Collector's booklet with new writing on the film by critic James Oliver- Keep Em Heads Rollin making-of documentary- Reconstructing Edward featurette on the creation of the Special EDition cut- Deleted scenes- Bloopers- Teasers and Trailers- Still Gallery- Lost in Brainland never-before-seen extended 3 hour version of the making-of documentary- PLUS OTHER SURPRISES!!! Sonos Reveals PLAYBASE Sound Stand Speaker, Price Set for $699[teaser]The company's latest audio device has been detailed.[/teaser] Sonos has announced the upcoming launch of its newest home audio product, the PLAYBASE. The thin speaker is designed to sit under a customer's TV, offering home theater sound and music streaming. "When we think about what product we’ll invent next, we think first about the home, and the role each of our products play in the home. What we realized is that PLAYBAR only met the need of the small percentage of homes where people mount their televisions on the wall," said Sonos CEO, Patrick Spence. "We saw a tremendous opportunity to deliver great sound in great style for the majority of homes where the TV sits on a piece of furniture. It was a huge challenge where we pushed the boundaries of design, acoustics, materials, wireless and software, and we can’t wait for people to bring it home." The PLAYBASE can support TVs up to 77 pounds, measures just 58 mm in height, and features 10 custom-designed drivers with dedicated amplifiers, including six mid-range, three tweeters, and one woofer. The device can connect to home theater displays through an optical cable. Likewise, the speaker can expand to other rooms by connecting wirelessly to a user's Sonos home sound system, providing robust music streaming support with access to more than 80 music services. "We have built a product that can not only handle the complexities of home theater – delivering open and natural sound, clear dialogue, and immersive bass that fills the room – but also fits perfectly in any home environment,” said Giles Martin, Sound Experience Leader at Sonos. The Sonos PLAYBASE ($699) will start shipping on April 4. Pre-orders are now available exclusively for current Sonos owners. Source: SonosPosted Wed Mar 8, 2017 at 07:30 AM PST by: -
