The popbox Media Center is Up for Preorder[teaser]Meanwhile, Syabas seeks out Flash developers for more content. [/teaser] Amazon has put the popbox up for pre-order. The popbox Media Center, which brings simple network streaming to the living room, runs only $129. It’s got a decent channel lineup, but it’s the promise of displaying almost every multimedia file that’s really exciting. Of course, a simple media streamer isn’t enough these days, even if it’s a capable one. There’s got to be some flash, some sizzle, some apps. With Apple putting a hurting on flash developers, Syabas, the makers of the popbox, is hoping to gain support. “This is a huge opportunity for the Flash development community,” said Alex Limberis, COO of popbox. The company released its software development kit today and is expecting huge returns. Developers will be able to make applications that play multimedia content from mounted drives, a home network or from the cloud. “The possibilities are endless,” says Liberis. “We can't wait to see what the community comes up with.” Source: AmazonPosted Wed Apr 21, 2010 at 10:00 AM PDT by: -

The VIA ARTiGO may be the Smallest HTPC Ever[teaser]If you’re okay with building your own, you can get your hands on this incredibly small computer for just $199. [/teaser] VIA’s latest DIY kit, known as the ARTiGO, is surprisingly small. It’s smaller than your PC for sure, slimmer than any VHS player, and it’s almost certainly smaller than your set-top box. The ARTiGO measures a mere 5.7 inches by 3.9 inches by 2 inches. The miniscule computer packs a VIA Nano 64-bit processor and integrated VIA Chrome9 graphics with MPEG-2/4, WMV9 and H.264 video decoding acceleration. It’s got five USB ports, an IDE 44-pin interface and a SATA interface for hard drive use. And of course, the ARTiGO sports an HDMI output. It’s $199 for the base model, but you can pick up some addons as well. There’s no built in WiFi, but you can nab an adapter from VIA. There’s also an optional TV mount which would position VIA’s new micro-PC right behind your television. Source: VIAPosted Wed Apr 21, 2010 at 08:00 AM PDT by: -

Panasonic Kicks Up 3D Plasma Production[teaser]3D sets are selling well, or at least better than Panasonic expected. [/teaser] It’s hard to naysay the whole 3D trend when Panasonic has already sold out of the sets allocated to the US. Panasonic’s sets, despite some worries of changing black levels, have been the best reviewed of the 3DTVs available. It makes sense of course that the company behind much of the tech used for the production of 'Avatar' would have the best sets. Panasonic’s plasmas have flown off the shelves and they’re responding by ramping up production. Their plasma factory is currently at full capacity, according to Hirotoshi Uehara, head of Panasonic’s TV business. Since the company can’t make more total sets, they’re changing up their production to allow for 30% more 3D sets. Obviously, Panasonic execs are pleased with the sales so far. “We've had a very strong reaction,” said Uehara. But he’s hoping 3D will make it out of entertainment and into business. “3D shouldn't just be limited to broadcast television,” he said. “It should reach a range of industries, such as video conferencing or PowerPoint presentations.” Source: Tech RadarPosted Wed Apr 21, 2010 at 06:00 AM PDT by:
