Redbox Talks Streaming Options[teaser]The kiosk-based company is hoping to find another way to compete with Netflix. [/teaser] Redbox is big, there's just no getting around it. But as huge and successful as the company is, there's a limiting factor that they're running up against and that's the complete and utter lack of an online presence. Redbox president Mitch Lowe says it won't be a problem for long. The company is currently considering a few options for online capabilities. "The way we look at it is - how can it help us deliver to our customers things we can’t do in our kiosks?" Going from a kiosk based company to an online streaming service may not seem like the simplest leap, but it's important to keep in mind that Netflix got a start as a DVD by mail service and only went streaming recently. Now the name goes hand in hand with streaming video. The new digital initiative from Redbox should form into a solid plan within the next few months. Sonic Solutions, the company behind CinemaNow, is being mentioned as one likely partner for digital distribution. Source: BusinessweekPosted Wed Jul 21, 2010 at 07:00 AM PDT by: -

Canada Gets Netflix Streaming[teaser]It's time for a celebration up north. Netflix streaming is finally coming to Canada![/teaser] Let's take the prerequisite Canada jokes as read. We'll assume that this news article contained references to moose, wrong bacon, beer, and 80's wrestlers that still maintain their popularity north of the border. Now that we've gotten all that out of the way, let's talk about Canada finally getting some streaming Netflix. According to the official press release, "Canadian Netflix members will be able to instantly watch a broad array of movies and TV episodes right on their TVs via a range of consumer electronics devices." Hopefully that means any device capable of streaming Netflix in the US can handle Netflix in Canada. Since they've been waiting patiently, Canada also gets the first ever streaming-only subscription option. That means you'll get all the streaming content you want, but you won't get any discs by mail. If you're not interested in the Blu-ray option, it's not a bad way to go. Pricing hasn't been announced for the service yet, but you can sign up at Netflix to get an email as soon as this all hits. Initially the service will launch in English, with a French option coming in the near future. Source: PR NewswirePosted Tue Jul 20, 2010 at 09:00 AM PDT by: -
