Physical Media Sales Continue to Decline but Overall Home Entertainment Spending Is Rising[teaser]Sales of discs are continuing to drop but the home entertainment industry itself is growing.[/teaser] As reported by The Digital Bits, recent sales data presented by the MPAA does not paint a particularly promising future for physical media. With that said, the continued popularity of streaming and cable services have led to an overall increase in home entertainment spending. According to the market data from the Digital Entertainment Group and IHS Markit, global physical media sales have declined by a staggering 48% over the last five years, dropping from $25.2 billion in 2014 to only $13.1 billion last year. And sadly, the launch of 4K and potential future arrival of 8K media don't seem to be pushing toward any kind of substantial uptick. Graphic via MPAA's 2018 Theme Report But while physical media sales might be on the decline, the overall home entertainment industry is actually growing -- thanks in large part to the increased popularity of digital media and streaming services. Per the MPAA report, global digital media spending has gone up by 170% over the last five years, rising from $15.7 billion in 2014 to $42.6 billion in 2018. In addition, 2018 marked the first year that subscriptions to online services surpassed subscriptions to cable. With that said, despite having fewer members, cable still accounted for a higher overall revenue total than streaming platforms did in 2018. Of course, many home theater enthusiasts (like myself) continue to greatly appreciate the video and audio quality benefits of physical media like 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray over digital streaming. It's just not clear whether that passionate yet relatively niche consumer base will be enough to ensure the survival of disc-based formats going forward. HBO Debuts GAME OF THRONES Lyric Video Performed by Florence + the Machine[teaser]The song from last night's episode is now available to stream online.[/teaser] HBO has released a lyric video for "Jenny of Oldstones," the melancholy song featured in last night's episode of Game of Thrones. The video includes clips from various seasons of the show as the track's lyrics are shown on screen, often relating to the sequences they accompany. "Jenny of Oldstones" is based on "Jenny's Song" from George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi wrote the music for the track and the show's writers added extra verses. Actor Daniel Portman, who plays Podrick Payne, sang the song in episode 2 of season 8, though the version here is the end credit's rendition performed by the band Florence + the Machine. Check out the lyric video below! Game of Thrones: Season Eight consists of six episodes, with the series finale set to air on May 19. Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Iain Glen, Alfie Allen, John Bradley, Gwendoline Christie, Liam Cunningham, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Jerome Flynn, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Rory McCann all reprise their roles for the final batch of episodes. And beyond the currently airing eighth season, HBO is set to start shooting a Game of Thrones prequel spin-off pilot this summer. Here's a synopsis per the network: Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it's not the story we think we know. The potential series comes George R. R. Martin and Jane Goldman (Kingsman, X-Men: First Class), and is set to star Naomi Watts as "a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret."
