Let's Shop HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, August 19, 2024Mid-August, releases still coming on strong. It is an ever so much of a reprieve this week, next week on the other hand, yeah, brace for impact! Welcome to Volume 5 Episode 12 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of August 18th - August 24th, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- Little bit of this, little bit of that, that's what 4K is about this week. (Sing it like the hokey pokey) Import Monday begins with You're Next (Limited Edition) from Second Sight. This is also available as a Standard Edition. Thus far, many of these Second Sight releases have not been duplicated with U.S. counterparts, and their Limited Editions have for the most part grown in value over the years. I bought this one, so, LionsGate will likely release it in the U.S.. Domestic Tuesday has no New Releases. The closest title to new release status though is Let Him Go from Universal Pictures. Yup, you can thank me again. The blu-ray was on sale, I bought it, a 4K was announced shortly afterwards. From Sony Pictures Entertainment, 1998 comedy Can't Hardly Wait. From Shout! Factory, the animated film The Last Unicorn. Also available as a Walmart Exclusive SteelBook. Also from Shout/Scream Factory, a reissue of the Evil Dead (2013) SteelBook, but not as a Best Buy Exclusive. A pair of skus from Kino Lorber, the double feature Peril & Distress: And Soon the Darkness / Sudden Terror, and Prime Cut. Closing it out, a reissue of Red Eye from Paramount. This one was previously available under the Paramount Presents line. Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases include You're Next (likely region B locked) from Second Sight and Prime Cut from Kino Lorber. Fairly good size selection this week in blu-ray. Next week is a whopper here too, but let's get through this week first. Anime highlights include The Ancient Magus' Bride - Season Two, Part One, Bungo Stray Dogs - Season Five and Helck (Season 1) Complete Collection. Little by little, the Robin Williams shelf fills in. This week Shout Select offers us Death To Smoochy. Special Interest right here.... Bloody Disgusting has partnered with Walmart to produce a line of Exclusive SteelBooks. They street this week, titles to get this treatment are Hannibal Rising, I Spit On Your Grave (2010), Leatherface, Sinister, Texas Chainsaw (2013), Wolf Creek and You're Next. Personal experience says YMMV when trying to find these in your local store. Assume nothing, even though they are Walmart Exclusives. Criterion Collection this week has Not a Pretty Picture, a serious subject matter drama/documentary. TV on disc, Universal has La Brea: Season Three, which is the final season. That being said, you can also get The Complete Series. With a Friday release date, Shout Factory has Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. This mega-set is also available in the UK from AlltheAnime. Friday also brings us more Australian imports, most of them via Amazon U.S.. Australian War Film Collection (Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan / Parer's War)(AU Import) Magnum P.I.: The Complete Series (2018 – 2024)(AU Import) The Outer Limits: The Complete Original Series (Australian Import) Broken Trail (2006) – Imprint Standard Edition Johnny Handsome (1989) – Imprint Standard Edition The Long Riders - Imprint Standard Edition The Driver - Imprint Standard Edition The Avengers: The Emma Peel Collection (1965-1967) - Imprint Standard Edition Hard Times - Imprint Standard Edition Extreme Prejudice - Imprint Standard Edition Dating The Enemy (Australian Import) (Slipcase Version) Notable announcements from last week: Universal will be releasing Friday Night Lights (2004) to 4K and 4K SteelBook on October 8th. Criterion Collection's November slate of titles has been announced, several familiar titles, but with a 4K label. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Give Thanks for The Criterion Collection's November Bounty of 4K UHD & Blu-ray ReleasesThe Criterion Collection's November wave of 4K UHD and Blu-ray titles have just been revealed. The titles this batch include: William Wyler's Funny Girl on 4K UHD and Blu-ray, Peter Bogdanovich's Paper Moon on 4K UHD and Blu-ray, Howard Hawks' Scarface on 4K UHD and Blu-ray, PLUS Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, and Ishiro Honda's Godzilla all on 4K UHD Blu-ray. Funny Girl - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Witness the birth of a movie star as Barbra Streisand makes a screen debut for the ages in this musical spectacular. From humor to pathos, she hits every note as popular 1920s singer-comedian Fanny Brice, a young Jewish New Yorker whose spirit and supernova talent propel her to fame in the Ziegfeld Follies, but whose devotion to an unreliable gambler (a charismatic Omar Sharif) brings drama and heartbreak into her life. Adapted from a hit Broadway show and directed by Hollywood master William Wyler, Funny Girl hits emotional highs in unforgettable performances of songs like “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade”—moments that won Streisand one of the most richly deserved Best Actress awards in Oscar history. 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES 4K digital restoration, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features New audio interview with actor Barbra Streisand New conversation between director William Wyler’s son David and author Alicia Malone Directed by William Wyler (1986), a documentary on Wyler’s life and career Archival interview with actor Omar Sharif Deleted scene featuring Streisand and Sharif Featurettes from the original theatrical release English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by author and film critic Michael KoreskyCover based on an original theatrical poster Check out the Blu-ray here. Paper Moon - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Maverick director Peter Bogdanovich affectionately recreates the world of the 1930s Dust Bowl in this beloved, briskly entertaining chronicle of one of cinema’s unlikeliest crime sprees. Real-life father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O’Neal (who became the youngest-ever Oscar winner for her spark-plug performance) play off each other with almost musical agility as a Bible-hawking con man and the precocious, recently orphaned tomboy who falls into his care—and soon rivals her newfound father figure’s skill as a swindler. With period-perfect detail, glowing monochrome imagery by cinematographer László Kovács, and a memorable supporting cast (including the inimitable Madeline Kahn), Paper Moon is a witty, loving portrait of two natural-born hustlers on a road trip through Depression-era America. 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features Audio commentary featuring director Peter Bogdanovich Introduction to the film by Bogdanovich New video essay by Bogdanovich biographer Peter Tonguette Three-part making-of documentary featuring Bogdanovich, production designer Polly Platt, associate producer Frank Marshall, and cinematographer László Kovács Archival interview with Platt Excerpts from a 1973 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson featuring Bogdanovich and actors Ryan and Tatum O’Neal Trailer English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by critic Mark HarrisNew cover by Raphael Geroni View the Blu-ray details here. Scarface - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Blazing across the screen in a spray of bullets, the gangster-film sensation Scarface helped set the standard for the genre for decades to come. Swaggering, scary, and unexpectedly charming, Paul Muni gives an iconic portrayal of criminal sociopathy as Tony Camonte, the ruthless, machine-gun-toting mobster who rises through the ranks of a bootlegging empire atop an ever-increasing body count, but whose possessive relationship with his wild-child sister (Ann Dvorak) threatens to be his undoing. With rat-a-tat command of editing and dialogue, and his trademark panache, director Howard Hawks creates an unstoppable sense of dynamism while pushing on-screen violence to new heights of brutality. 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features Alternate ending, from the censored version of the film New conversation between author Megan Abbott and actor Bill Hader New interview with film scholar Lea Jacobs on director Howard Hawks’s innovative use of sound and editing English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by critic Imogen Sara SmithNew cover by Mark Chiarello Check out the Blu-ray here. The Shape of Water - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Cinema’s great modern mythmaker Guillermo del Toro uses the hallmarks of classic horror and fantasy to tell a strange and sublime fable about outsiderhood, connection, and love’s transcendence. An ineffably touching Sally Hawkins plays Elisa, a mute janitor at a top-secret government laboratory who finds herself drawn to the facility’s newest research subject: a humanoid amphibian—for whom she is soon risking everything, amid the stifling conformity of 1960s America. A triumph of visual imagination that combines elements of sci-fi, noir, and the golden-age musical, this swooning cinematic dreamscape—winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director—is a monster movie with a human heart. Get Your ‘Euro-Kinski’ Fill with Creature with the Blue Hand / Web of the Spider Hitting Blu-ray on October 22!A pair of creepy Klaus Kinski classics will be available in a special collector's edition Blu-ray on October 22 from Film Masters. The films included are Creature With the Blue Hand (1967) and Web of the Spider (1971). Creature With the Blue Hand (1967) - Originally released in Germany as Die Blaue Hand, the film was bought by Roger Corman’s New World Pictures and released in the U.S. in 1967 as the alternate version, Creature With the Blue Hand. This release is presented for the first time on Blu-ray in North America. A mystery-thriller about a series of grisly murders. It's one of several German films based on the novels of Edgar Wallace, many adaptations of which starred Kinski. Directed by Alfred Vohrer, the film also stars Harald Leipnitz and Carl Lange. The film follows an inmate (Kinski) who is being held at a questionable sanitarium. When the inmate escapes and a series of murders occur, signs point to him as the killer ... but is he? Based on the novel, The Blue Hand, by Edgar Wallace, Creature With the Blue Hand is a suspenseful ride with many gothic elements and complex plot twists. Labeled as a “Krimi” film, this is a classic example of the genre, combining elements of mystery, crime and horror. The film was later acquired by Independent International Pictures and released to home video in the U.S. as The Bloody Dead in 1987 with six minutes of new footage, shot specifically for the release. The extra footage is included in this special edition as a bonus feature, which also includes a HD version of the full film, The Bloody Dead. Web of the Spider (1971) - A classic haunted house tale from Italian maestro, Antonio Margheriti, with Kinski as none other than Edgar Allan Poe! It's a diabolical double dose from one of cinema's most controversial and unique figures! In the film, American writer Alan Foster is challenged to spend the night in a haunted castle by Edgar Allan Poe and his friend, Lord Blackwood. Foster, intrigued and eager for new inspiration for his writing, accepts the challenge. Once inside the supposedly deserted castle, Foster encounters many intriguing characters including the beautiful Elisabeth Blackwood. Foster and Elizabeth fall in love, but things are complicated when Elizabeth reveals that she may not be entirely alive. In a series of increasingly supernatural events, Foster learns about the tragic and sinister history of the castle and its former inhabitants. As the night progresses, the line between reality and the supernatural blurs. Web of the Spider also stars Anthony Franciosa and Michèle Mercier and is a remake of director Margheriti's earlier film, Castle of Blood (1964). This version of Web of the Spider is the 92-minute U.S. version of the original Italian version of Nella Stretta Morsa del Ragno.controversial and unique figures! Make Your Collection Epic - HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, August 12, 2024Whether you're shopping for 4K or blu-ray, or both, this week sees a considerable uptick in volume. I know I can't choose just one release, what about you? Welcome to Volume 5 Episode 11 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of August 11th - August 17th, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- Let's just say it. There's probably something for everyone this week. There are no imports to speak of, so let's get started with New Release Tuesday first. Three titles this week are considered New Releases. First from Paramount, IF, which is short for Imaginary Friends. Next, with their traditional 0-day street date notice, The Bikeriders from Universal Pictures. And from Warner Bros, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. This one is also available as a Limited Edition SteelBook. On to catalog titles. Titles getting a 4K upgrade, withOUT the digital code. Warner Bros brings us three titles with Black Mass, Game Night and Just Mercy, with Focus being pushed back two weeks, and it would be no surpirse to see these three being pushed as well. I want 4K upgrades as much as the next guy, but when money is tight or there are a lot of releases to pick and choose from, sometimes the lack of a digital code might be a deciding factor. Sometimes a lack of a slipcover is a decider for me as well, I know, maybe I am eccentric. A double-feature special edition from Arrow Video, When Titans Ruled The Earth: Clash of the Titans & Wrath of the Titans. One has to wonder how the original Harryhausen masterpiece would look with a 4K upgrade. Bare minimum the HDR or DV grade would certainly make it worthwhile! From the Criterion Collection, The Last Emperor. Previously Turbine did a release in Germany, and Arrow Video did one in the UK, read our review to see where this one ranks. Because, Chuck Norris, am I right? This week from Shout studios, The Delta Force, with, Chuck Norris. Kino Lorber has a pair of French crime-wave films directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, Bob le Flambeur and Le Doulos. Still on track for this week, Dark Force Entertainment's general release of Mirror Mirror. Synapse Films has broken the double-feature up in to single title releases, referring to Demons and Demons 2. And nothing new really, but it's a 4K release. A less bulky repackage for Beverly Hills Cop: 3-Movie Collection. Import Friday has one release (via Amazon U.S.), Umbrealla Entertainment's standard edition of JSA: Joint Security Area. Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases include IF prom Paramount, The Bikeriders from Universal, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga from Warner Bros, When Titans Ruled The Earth: Clash of the Titans & Wrath of the Titans from Arrow Video, and Demons and Demons 2 from Synapse. Usually when I think Monday releases, I think UK imports. But not this week. CrunchyRoll Exclusives, B: The Beginning: Season Two, which comes as a Limited Edition as well as a standard edition. And on to Tuesday releases, and we got close to 70 to look through. Anime highlights include Boruto: Naruto Next Generations - Set 18 (Farewell), The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy (Season 1) Complete Collection, The Devil Is a Part-Timer!: Season 2 Part 2, My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1: The Complete Season and One Piece: Season Thirteen - Voyage Nine. The Criterion Collection has Ukrainian drama/romance films Brief Encounters / The Long Farewell: Two Films by Kira Muratov. Those that got the first two seasons, you are now ready to own the third, that would be Chucky: Season Three. Assuming no last minute delay, action/crime films In The Line Of Duty III and In The Line Of Duty IV should be released this Tuesday. Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has a pretty extensive box set worthy of a purchase this week, The Three Stooges Collection. A 20-disc set with tons of Stooges action. I preordered mine. Friday brings us more Australian Imports via Amazon U.S.: Emperor (AU Import) The Quiet Family (Australian Import) Lonesome Dove: The Ultimate Collection (Australian Import) Hamlet (1990) (Australian Import) Darling (1965)(Australian Import) Dating The Enemy (Australian Import) Love And Other Catastrophes (Australian Import) Notable announcements from last week: Disney has revealed that Inside Out 2 is coming to blu-ray and 4K on September 10th. At this time it looks like the 4K will be a SteelBook only, and it is unknown if that will be a Walmart Exclusive. The elusive Godzilla Minus One is now available for preorder in the U.S market. Both as a standard release and SteelBook editions. If we had to guess, end of August on those. Emmy winning TV series The West Wing: The Complete Series has been officially announced for a blu-ray release from Warner Bros, with an October 1 release date. Again, more TV on blu-ray and 4K is a wonderful thing! I got my preorder in before a street date was even announced. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?Posted Mon Aug 12, 2024 at 06:00 AM PDT by: -

The Criterion Collection Celebrates 40 Years with 40-Film Blu-ray Boxset 11/19/24For four decades The Criterion Collection has been the standard bearer for high-quality home video releases. From LasterDisc to DVD to Blu-ray and 4K UHD, Criterion has delivered a unique and diverse catalog of films with world-class presentations and bonus features. Now they're celebrating with a massive box set! Ever wonder what a 40-film 49-disc boxset from The Criterion Collection would look like? Well on November 19th, you're going to find out! The Criterion Collection celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year with a stylish (and massive) 40-film box set collecting a full range of their biggest and best hits from the ages. CC40 - The Criterion Collection 40th Anniversary As Brad Pitt once asked so eloquently "What's in the box!?! What's in the box?" - A LOT! Here's the film's you'll find: The films: 8½ (1963), Tokyo Story (1953), All That Jazz (1979), Bicycle Thieves (1948), Repo Man (1984), Naked (1993), Jules and Jim (1962), Being There (1979), Weekend (1967), Yi Yi (2000), The Night of the Hunter (1955), Pickpocket (1959), Sweet Smell of Success (1957), On the Waterfront (1954), Do the Right Thing (1989), Ratcatcher (1999), Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971), Mirror (1975), Barry Lyndon (1975), Safe (1995), Seconds (1966), His Girl Friday (1940), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985), Y tu mamá también (2001), My Own Private Idaho (1991), Love & Basketball (2000), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Ace in the Hole (1951), 3 Women (1977), The Red Shoes (1948), Down by Law (1986), La Ciénaga (2001), Wanda (1970), House (1977), Sullivan’s Travels (1941), The Battle of Algiers (1966), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962), Persona (1966), In the Mood for Love (2000) Obviously, this is a very niche collector's set. For a lot of folks, this might not be the greatest investment when so many of these films have been out for so long, it's big commitment for something that may live as an eccentric shelf piece. I personally have more than half of these. And last the SRP of $800 - that's another huge consideration for collectors (even if that averages down to a respectable $20 a flick). At the moment this is only for sale on The Criterion Collection website shop, but we anticipate Amazon and other retailers to offer it up soon.Posted Thu Aug 8, 2024 at 10:54 AM PDT by:
