The Trailer Park: Old Wolves, New Tricks

This set of trailers for some potentially great upcoming movies leaves me feeling a little hesitant. The films all have potential, but the previews aren’t very convincing. I think that the success of these movies will definitely ride on the casts, directors and interest in the stories, rather than how well the trailers sell them.

‘Oldboy’

Seeing as how this is a remake of the awesome South Korean thriller by Park Chan-wook, I’m actually pretty excited to see this. Being a fan of Spike Lee also helps. However, the fact that Mark Protosevich penned the script makes me a bit leery. His previous work on ‘Poseidon‘ and ‘I Am Legend‘ has been less than satisfactory. Still, the trailer looks good, which tempts me to see it on the big screen. However, some familiar images that appear to be direct copies of the original film make me consider waiting for the Blu-ray instead.

‘The Wolf of Wall Street’

Despite being familiar with the real-life story and stock market scandal, the preview for this black comedy just isn’t doing it for me. The music is upbeat, the imagery is stylish and flashy, and the acting looks to be top-notch. Yet for some reason, the two minutes we spend on it seem a bit on the boring side. My desire to see the movie really comes mostly from my love for anything by Martin Scorsese. Seeing Leonardo DiCaprio star as Jordan Belfort actually builds more anticipation than the trailer itself.

‘Jobs’

Of today’s three trailers, this bio-pic has caught my attention the most. It may not be as flashy or exciting as the others, but something in the editing captures my imagination. Of course, telling the story of the life of Steve Jobs helps quite a bit. Even so, I’m still hesitant, partly due to relatively new director Joshua Michael Stern. Other than ‘Swing Vote‘, which I liked, I’m unfamiliar with his work and not sure what to expect. Then there’s Ashton Kutcher, who hasn’t done anything of real significance in nearly a decade and, in my estimation, has yet to prove himself a serious worthwhile actor. We’ll have to wait and see if he can pull this off.
