Monster Madness: Mountain King vs. Stay Puft – Chucky vs. Leprechaun

We had some really close match-ups over the weekend. Both went down to the wire. As of now, it looks like razor-thin victories will go to the Mummy and Cloverfield. In today’s Monster Madness, we’ll find out if trolls like marshmallows and what happens when a killer doll meets a killer leprechaun.

Part of the reason I liked the movie ‘Troll Hunter‘ so much was the imagination that went into creating the varied trolls in the movie. None, however, were as preeminently badass as the Mountain King Troll seen at the end of the movie. Now the question is, does this giant troll stand a chance against an enormous smiling marshmallow?

Mountain King Troll – Living in such a cold environment would make anyone angry. The Mountain King Troll is also enormous, so his ill temperament usually leads to him destroying anything in his path.

Strengths: Like many of the monsters in this tournament, he’s big and strong. He could squash just about anything just by stepping on it. Also, his anger is one of the driving forces behind his destructive nature. If you make him mad, watch out.

Weaknesses: Ultraviolet light. However, with a troll this size, it would take a lot of UV rays to turn him to stone. One wonders if Stay Puft could get hold of any concentrated UV anyway.

Stay Puft Marshmallow Man – Imagine being thrust into existence simply because someone thought of you during a battle with a demonic force that was going to use his next thought as a weapon against him. Considering his very short lifespan, Stay Puft was able to wreak some havoc as a giant sugar-infused monster.

Strengths: I’m not really sure that he has any other strengths other than being really, really big.

Weaknesses: Obviously, he’s quite adverse to Proton Packs. Also, I’d think that a horde of boy scouts jonesing for s’mores could take him down relatively easily. He just looks so tasty.

Two pint-sized horrors go up against one another in this match-up. This is one of my favorite head-to-heads in the entire tournament. Couldn’t you just picture these two awkwardly stabbing at each other as they each try to pull the scariest “I’m gonna get you” face that they can muster? This is a really hard battle for me to pick a winner.

Chucky – Who knew that a demonic talking doll would go on to make sequel after sequel? When I was younger, just seeing a cover for a ‘Child’s Play‘ movie at the local Blockbuster would give me the willies. I never looked at dolls the same way again after that.

Strengths: Chucky seems to be invincible in some way. Sure, he’s died plenty of times at the end of each movie, yet there’s always a way to bring him back. It’s hard to kill demonic possession.

Weaknesses: Chucky has been melted, sliced up and shot. However, each time he dies, he just comes back to life in another sequel.

Leprechaun – Here’s another bloodthirsty ankle biter who can seemingly kill grown people with ease. This horror movie always made me laugh, mostly because it starred Jennifer Aniston running away from a tiny Irish death.

Strengths: It always amazed me how Leprechaun and Chucky could take down full-grown victims. This seems like a pretty big strength.

Weaknesses: Four-leaf clovers and giant explosions.

Looks like Clover pulled out the win in the end, sad that Pyramid Head couldn’t do the same though. As for these match-ups, I have to go with Stay-Puft even though you’re probably right about his vulnerability, unfortunately we never really got to see how capable he was. And I give Chucky a slight edge over Leprechaun.

I went with Stay Puft under this theory: The troll would succeed in pummeling the marshmallow man into goo…but the marshmallow goo would get sticky all over the troll, immobilizing it until daybreak, whereupon Stay Puft’s warming goo could coalesce and re-form.

Gotta agree on this one. Even if you manage to torch Stay Puft, you have burning marshmellows and melting marshmellows, which, as you said, turns into a sticky goo. Of course, this brings up an interesting question – would this be a Stay Puft victory or a draw, as, if Stay Puft were a sticky pile of goo, that means that both would be destroyed.

As for Chucky vs Leprechaun, Chucky clearly has the advantage. While he does keep getting destroyed, he keeps coming back. That is certainly an advantage.

Well, a troll dies when it turns to rocks. As I recall, fire does not stop Stay Puft; and it’s my experience that mystical goo can usually re-form itself, given time. I think Stay Puft would be in trouble if a giant graham cracker got involved.

  3. I really want to vote for Stay Puft. However, it seems to me that he’s clearly vulnerable to fire, which will turn him into a useless pile of goo. Can the Mountain King Troll strike a torch? If so, game over.

On the other hand, Chucky over the Leprechaun is a clear victory.

Weren’t t the Mountain Kings the group of trolls in the cave? I could have swore that the last HUGE troll was something that started with a J.
