The Trailer Park: Two Remakes, One Original

As the post title makes clear, this week’s trailers feature two retreads and one fresh idea – the latter of which marks Chan-wook Park’s American debut. Interestingly, they all look good.

‘Carrie’

Although only a teaser trailer, the look of Kimberly Pierce’s remake has me intrigued. That’s probably mostly because it stars Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, since we really can’t make much else about it at this point. This latest retelling of Stephen King’s classic novel marks the third adaptation, along with two stage performances and a sequel. I have high hopes due to the two wonderful actresses, but I’ll reserve judgment at least until the next trailer.

‘Stoker’

I absolutely love the structure and style of this preview. The creepiness factor is very high, and the few glimpses or words we get make Chan-wook Park’s latest psychological thriller look unbelievably disturbing. The opening with Nicole Kidman saying something horrible to her daughter is chilling, and Mia Wasikowska is spine-tinglingly creepy. Sadly, this is one of several projects that Tony Scott had been working on before his death. Arguably of more interest, the film is also ‘Prison Break’ star Wentworth Miller’s first screenplay to be produced.

‘Maniac’

Let’s start by identifying this trailer as NSFW (not safe for work), and I really mean it! This is the latest splatter film from producer Alexandre Aja, with Franck Khalfoun directing, and is of the “New French Extremity” horror subgenre. Based on an original screenplay by Joe Spinell, this is a remake of William Lustig’s 1980 shocker, one that I have a particular fondness for. Elijah Wood plays the mentally disturbed, mannequin-collecting Frank Zito. I like the look of the movie based on this trailer, but I’m also a bit hesitant, as I always am of remakes.
