I’d Like to See Someone Try to Adapt This Into a Movie

I’d Like to See Someone Try to Adapt This Into a Movie

Technically, this doesn’t have anything to do with movies or home theater… yet. But it’s pretty cool, and today is a slow news day after a holiday, so I feel like sharing it. In these days when print publishing is facing enormous threat of obsolescence from the likes of e-readers, iPads and so forth, some authors still have a strong attachment to the traditional medium of books on paper. In his previous novels, Jonathan Safran Foer has often played with fonts and page layouts to interact with the ways a reader follows his storytelling. In his new book, he takes these ideas about twenty steps further. Seriously, this thing is crazy!

Dolby Rolls Out the Red Carpet

Dolby Rolls Out the Red Carpet

Hot on the heels of our appearances at Blu-Con at the beginning of this month, Mike Palmer here at High-Def Digest and I found ourselves on the move again. This time, we were both invited to visit Dolby headquarters in San Francisco for a conference that the company called the “Fidelity Forum.” Mike is planning to write up some detailed coverage of the event that will run on the site’s main page. In the meantime, I’ll just offer a brief summary of the day and hit the highlights.

Mid-Week Poll: Do You Watch Movies on a Portable Device?

It seems that some people enjoy watching movies on a phone or portable device, while others – especially home theater purists – refuse to watch movies on such a small screen. Where do you stand on this issue?

I Just Plain Don’t Want an All-In-One Device

Do you dream of having a Pip-Boy strapped to your wrist detailing your vital statistics, streaming communications, and – Why not? – playing video and audio files to your heart’s content? Mobile Viewing: Best Android Apps for Watching Movies?

Mobile Viewing: Best Android Apps for Watching Movies?

Many home theater snobs are opposed to the idea of ever watching a movie on a phone or portable device. Not me. Also, ripping my old DVD collection gives me an excuse to do something with those standard-def discs now that I can’t bring myself to watch them on my HD big screen anymore. A 4″ screen is just about the right size for DVD video.

Mobile Viewing: Take Your Whole Theater with You

Mobile Viewing: Take Your Whole Theater with You

As the guy from ‘RoboCop’ might say, “I’d buy that for a dollar!” Some crafty devil has made a miniature theater for an iPhone out of a shoebox. It has seats and curtains, and even a tiny usher. Do-It-Yourself kits are available for sale, if interested.

I know that many home theater snobs are opposed to the idea of ever watching a movie on a phone or portable device. I don’t have a problem with it. I have a subway commute every day, and I enjoy using that time to watch movies on my phone or iPod. Better that than staring at the scary people around me on the train. I wonder what kind of looks I’d get for shoving my face in a shoebox the whole ride. It might just be worth it.

The iPad: Hands-On Coverage and 20 Great Apps

The iPad: Hands-On Coverage and 20 Great Apps

When I was standing in a line of 200 people for the iPad a few weekends ago in Manhattan Beach, I was wondering why I was there.  I already have a Dell Laptop, an Asus Netbook and the iPhone 3GS, so my mobile needs were already taken care of.  At least, that’s what I thought until I stripped the shiny plastic off my new iPad and fired it up.
