Now Playing: The Shaky Marriage of Cliché and Creativity

Now Playing: The Shaky Marriage of Cliché and Creativity

I don’t have a problem with romance flicks in general, except when they feel like mash-ups of every other romantic drama out there. The concept of ‘The Vow’ has a lot of potential, but it’s bogged down by an unhealthy amount of recycled content.

Now Playing: Familiar ‘Safe House’ Excels with Great Action and Strong Leads

Now Playing: Familiar ‘Safe House’ Excels with Great Action and Strong Leads

If ‘Journey 2′ is the recommended mindless family flick this week, ‘Safe House’ is the recommended mindless adult flick of the week. Filled with intense, almost non-stop action, it will at least keep you entertained.

Now Playing: Second ‘Journey’ Better Than First, But That’s Not Saying Much

Now Playing: Second ‘Journey’ Better Than First, But That’s Not Saying Much

There are literally three things I remember about ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth‘: First, two members of the cast stuck out in my mind because I remember thinking, “Poor Brendan Frasier has fallen a long way” and “This Josh Hutcherson kid sure is a terrible little actor.” Secondly, I remember watching those two running away from a T-Rex. And third, I remember that it was one of the first films to use the new digital 3D technology, but it was used for a lot of cheap effects that tried to make items pop out of the screen. ‘Journey 2′ doesn’t feature Brendan Frasier, and Josh Hutcherson has improved quite a bit, but the movie still misuses 3D and only has a handful of scenes that you’ll remember.

Weekend Movies: A Variety of Mindless Flicks

Weekend Movies: A Variety of Mindless Flicks

All of the movies taking the big screen this weekend are on the border of mediocrity. None of them is fatally terrible nor particularly great, but every audience has something to mild to see.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Chronicle’ and ‘Woman in Black’ Win Big

Weekend Box Office: ‘Chronicle’ and ‘Woman in Black’ Win Big

Super Bowl weekend doesn’t usually result in big box office earnings, but this year proved otherwise. The top five movies pulled in an estimated $95.9 million, up 31% from the same period last year. Even more surprising is the movie that took the #1 spot. Continue Reading

Now Playing: A Whale of a Tale

Now Playing: A Whale of a Tale

While watching ‘Big Miracle’, thoughts will continually flood into your mind about how contrived, by-the-book and formulaic this story of a multinational effort to free three whales trapped in the arctic ice of northern Alaska is. Yet as cheesy and made-up as the whole thing appears, when actual footage of the real-life people and events are shown during the closing credits, you’ll realize that most of the movie is indeed factual – including the really lame stuff. This makes for a feel-good family film much better than its recent oceanic counterpart, ‘Dolphin Tale’.

Now Playing: The Best “Found Footage” Film Since ‘Cloverfield’

Now Playing: The Best “Found Footage” Film Since ‘Cloverfield’

I typically dislike the “found footage” genre. It’s one of the weakest forms of cinematic entertainment – not to mention one of the cheapest, since the filmmakers don’t have to polish the look of their movie and can get away with casting no-name actors. ‘Chronicle’ doesn’t quite use the gimmick in the newest of fashions and it’s filled with unrecognizable actors, but it’s a whole lot better than other recent entries in this genre such as ‘The Devil Inside’ or ‘Paranormal Activity’. Now Playing: Another Worthless PG-13 Horror Movie

Now Playing: Another Worthless PG-13 Horror Movie

As a ‘Harry Potter’ fan, I really looked forward to seeing Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-’Potter’ role. After all, who doesn’t love a good, creepy horror movie? It’s a shame that ‘The Woman in Black’ turned out to be such a cheap-shot, lame ghost story. Sure, it will make you jump out of your seat plenty enough, but there’s more to a good scary movie than that.

Weekend Movies: It’ll Take More Than a ‘Miracle’ to Get Audiences Out This Weekend

Weekend Movies: It’ll Take More Than a ‘Miracle’ to Get Audiences Out This Weekend

Although the worst movie month of the year is over, the first weekend of February still feels like it belongs back in January. This weekend’s releases consist of one bad movie, one fluffy movie, and one slightly above par. Once again, this might be a great weekend to catch up on those Oscar nominated films you’ve missed.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Grey’ Makes Green

Weekend Box Office: ‘Grey’ Makes Green

This, the last weekend of January, turned out to be quite surprising. If you had told me in advance that an R-rated movie about a man punching-out a pack of wolves would be #1 at the box office, and that Katherine Heigl would outgross a Sam Worthington heist thriller, I wouldn’t have believed you.
