Could There BE Any More Discs This Week? HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Sept. 23, 2024Poof. Just like that, the last week of the month of September, and Autumn (Fall) is here in the Northern hemisphere, and oh yeah, there are a lot of titles to wade through this week. Welcome to Volume 5 Episode 17 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of September 22nd - September 28th, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- Import Monday begins with Love, Death & Apocalypse: Three Films by Álex de la Iglesia from Arrow UK. Domestic Tuesday has so many choices this week, some of us will rank them when making our decisions. New Releases go first, of course. A few weeks ago we probably got tempted by, or bought Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, this week if you somehow did not own that and all the previous movies, you can not get Max Max: Five Film Collection. From Decal/Neon, 2024 crime/thriller Longlegs. Am I seeing a lot of red? In a short-notice window, Universal brings us the third sequel, referring to Despicable Me 4. With all the fanfare and money this franchise has made, no doubt expect a part 5 in the future. And the final new release this week was literally officially announced towards the end of last week and it is another (third) sequel, Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Also available as a Limited Edition SteelBook. Catalog titles begin with Sony and Body Double, considered an erotic crime thriller. Not something we see very often, TV on 4K disc, especially something not produced in the past couple of years. This week we get Friends: The Complete Series from Warner Bros, all 86+ hours worth of sit-com TV! Next on the list, a pair of releases from Criterion Collection. First, Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, categorized in the romcom category. And the 1998 comedy Happiness with Jane Adams, Jon Lovitz and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Paramount brings us the adventure fantasy Stardust to 4K SteelBook. It seems like only yesterday when HD-DVD and Blu-ray were competing and this came out on HD-DVD. Indie label Blue Underground is on track to release action comedy The Million Eyes of Sumuru this week. Shout Factory makes an appearance this week with Village Of The Damned (1995). Vinegar Syndrome has our regular monthly visit, new Limited Edition site exclusives, and standard editions available via Amazon and other merchants. For Limited Edition, Delirium: Photo of Gioia and Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf. And for Standard Editions, Devil Times Five and Last Embrace. Available Thursday as an import from Germany, Downfall, a history/war film from 2004. Next week, not the pattern we have been seeing a lot the past few months, it is quite a lot less to sort through. The month does seem pretty consistent week to week if you exclude October 1st. Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases include the region B import of Love, Death & Apocalypse: Three Films by Álex de la Iglesia, region A/region-all releases of Longlegs, Despicable Me 4, which is also available as a 4-movie collection, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which is also available as a 4-movie collection, Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, Happiness and The Ladykillers. The rest of the blu-ray category this week is pretty damned big! The trick though is a lot of it is indie labels and BD-R MOD releases. Import Monday has a handful of titles that may or may not be Region B locked: The Outcasts (UK Import) Michael Powell: Early Works (UK Import) I Am Waiting (UK Import) Unlawful Entry (UK Import) Love, Death & Apocalypse: Three Films by Álex de la Iglesia (Arrow Limited Edition) (UK Import) When Tomorrow Comes - Indicator Series (Limited Edition UK Import) The Lady is Willing - Indicator Series (Limited Edition UK Import) You and Me - Indicator Series (Limited Edition UK Import) You'll Never Get Rich - Indicator Series (Limited Edition UK Import) Death Game (UK Import) Domestic Tuesday has so many directions I could go. How about we explore TV on disc first with The Stand (2020) - Walmart Exclusive SteelBook, Young Sheldon: The Complete Sixth Season, Young Sheldon: The Complete Seventh Season and Young Sheldon: The Complete Series. The Warner Archive Collection's September batch streets this week. Titles include Bathing Beauty (1944), Conflict (1945), I Remember Mama (1948), Jonny's Golden Quest / Jonny Quest vs. the Cyber-Insects (1992-1995), Journey Into Fear (1943) and A Prairie Home Companion (2006). The Exorcism (2023) with Russell Crowe is available from Vertical Entertainment. (Note: Most of their releases use lossy audio, and this one has DD 5.1). Anime highlights include The Eminence in Shadow (Season 2) Complete Collection, GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka - Complete Collection, Kite: Integral Version, Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island - Movie, Monster Musume: Everyday Life With Monster Girls - Complete Collection, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation - Season 2 Part 1 and Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage - Season 2. The prequel to Shaolin Soccer, comedy/sport film The Champions comes to us via Eureka Entertainment. Notable announcements from last week: Sort of like the last week, there are a bunch of onesie twosie announcements from lots of different labels. Galaxy Quest will be coming to 4K and 4K SteelBook on December 3rd. Multiple Kino Lorber releases have had their details announced, new titles added, and several titles pushed back. CrunchyRoll and Sentai Filmworks have revealed their December slates. Check our release calendar for full lists. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Aaron Sorkin's 'The West Wing: The Complete Series' Is Elected to Blu-ray October 1stAlright physical media fans, who is ready for the ultimate walk-n-talk? Aaron Sorkin's Emmy-winning drama, The West Wing is coming to Blu-ray on October 1st. Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, all 156 episodes (that's around 6617 minutes) will arrive on disc. Remember that time when you could sit back, take a breath, and actually feel good about your elected officials? No I don't mean the Clinton years or the innocuous early days of the Bush administration. I mean when you could turn on NBC and catch the latest episode of Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing. Well, now you can enjoy all seven seasons of the Bartlit Administration and the numerous classic Walk-n-Talks in 1080p! All 156 episodes of the show will be coming to 28 Blu-ray discs this October. We don't have full specs on aspect ratios and audio format, but we do expect them to mirror the show's current streaming presentation. We also don't have a full list of extra features, but from the details expect most of the DVD content to carry over. I'm personally not thrilled with the choice of cases, individual seasons in standard Blu-ray cases would be much nicer, regardless it'll be great to have the full set in 1080p on disc. Eureka Unleashes Martial Arts Fury with 'Super Spies and Secret Lies' & 'The Sword' on Blu-ray November 19th!Three "undercover classics" from the Shaw Brothers will be coming in a limited edition Blu-ray boxed set from Eureka Entertainment on November 19. A limited edition Blu-ray of The Sword will also be available on the same date. The films included in the boxed set are The Golden Buddha, Angel with the Iron Fists and The Singing Thief. The release will be limited to 2000 copies (per territory) and will exclusively feature an O-card slipcase, and a collector’s booklet. In The Golden Buddha, businessman Paul (Paul Chang Chung, Police Story) finds himself in the crosshairs of the Skeleton Gang after he picks up the wrong briefcase on a flight to Singapore – one containing a small golden Buddha that might just play a part in a vast criminal conspiracy. In Angel with the Iron Fists, a mysterious woman (Lily Ho, Lady with a Sword) arrives in Hong Kong carrying a cache of stolen diamonds and quickly becomes embroiled with the infamous Devil Girl’s Gang. Finally, in The Singing Thief, a master cat burglar (Jimmy Lin Chong, Tropicana Interlude) makes the decision to go straight and pursue a new career as a singer – that is, at least, until he becomes a suspect in a series of jewel heists. Directed by studio regulars Lo Wei (The Big Boss) and Chang Cheh (The One-Armed Swordsman), The Golden Buddha, Angel with the Iron Fists and The Singing Thief filter a craze for films centered on super-spies and master criminals through the inimitable style of the Shaw Brothers Studio. All three films are presented on Blu-ray for the first time from HD masters supplied by Celestial Pictures. However, his retirement has done nothing to dampen his reputation; a young warrior, Li Mak-jan (Cheng), wishes to challenge the master in order to test his own sword-fighting skill. But as Li searches for the reclusive Hua Qian Shu so that he might face him in combat, he finds himself entangled with old lovers and new rivals. Soon, it becomes apparent that the old master's sword really might be cursed – and will, perhaps, bring nothing but tragedy to those who seek to wield it.After a period of dormancy, wuxia films resurged in the 1980s as the likes of Duel to the Death, Bastard Swordsman and Tsui Hark's Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain rejected the realist approach adopted by kung fu cinema in the previous decade. Eureka Classics is proud to present Patrick Tam's The Sword – one of the earliest and best pictures to emerge from this wuxia revival – for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK from a brand new 2K restoration. The Criterion Collection Unwraps Their Packed December 4K UHD & Blu-ray SlateNot that it's ever cheap to be a physical media collector during the holidays, but Criterion isn't doing us any favors. Big hits from Sammo Hung, the Coen Brothers, Fellini, and Wim Wenders all join the collection. Criterion offers up an eclectic new slate to their carefully curated collection of films. Now, a couple of these aren't too surprising, 8½ and Paris Texas are already on Blu-ray so we're getting welcome (if expected) upgrades. The biggest news is No Country for Old Men - the Coen Brothers' Oscar-winning thriller from the Cormac McCarthy classic novel is very good news. It was a big hitter on Blu-ray in its day, but a 4K Dolby Vision upgrade supervised by Roger Deakins is very exciting! Completing the eclectic list is Samo Hung's slick action classic Eastern Corridors - sadly only on Blu-ray but still should be a good disc. Here's what we're getting for the final month of 2024 No Country for Old Men - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray 2007 • 122 minutes • Color • 5.1 surround • 2.39:1 aspect ratio A deadly game of chance and destiny plays out against the stark backdrop of early-1980s West Texas in Joel and Ethan Coen’s powerful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel. When he happens upon more than two million dollars from a drug deal turned desert massacre, a retired welder and Vietnam veteran (Josh Brolin) sets into motion a wave of senseless, inexorable violence as he’s stalked across the plains by a soul-weary sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) and a psychopathic hit man (Javier Bardem). Winner of four Academy Awards—including Best Picture, and Best Supporting Actor for the indelibly disturbing Bardem—this darkly deadpan borderlands noir keeps both the tension and the existential unease mounting through each cruelly ironic twist of fate. DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital master, supervised and approved by director of photography Roger Deakins, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack In the 4K UHD edition: One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features New conversation between filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen and author Megan Abbott New conversation between Deakins and associate producer David Diliberto, also featuring Abbott Archival interviews with actors Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones, and Kelly Macdonald Behind-the-scenes documentary by Brolin Three documentaries about the making of the film featuring on-set footage and interviews with members of the cast and crew English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by author Francine Prose and a 2007 piece on the film by author Larry McMurtry Blu-ray Edition Also Coming 8½ - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray 1963 • 138 minutes • Black & White • Monaural • In Italian with English subtitles • 1.85:1 aspect ratio Marcello Mastroianni plays Guido Anselmi, a director whose new project is collapsing around him, along with his life. One of the greatest films about film ever made, Federico Fellini’s 8½ turns one man’s artistic crisis into a grand epic of the cinema. An early working title for 8½ was The Beautiful Confusion, and Fellini’s masterpiece is exactly that: a shimmering dream, a circus, and a magic act. Also featured is Fellini’s rarely-seen first film for television, Fellini: A Director’s Notebook (1969). Produced by Peter Goldfarb, this “imagined documentary” of Fellini on Fellini is a kaleidoscope of unfinished projects, all of which provide a fascinating and candid window into the director’s unique creative process. 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features Introduction by filmmaker Terry Gilliam Audio commentary featuring film critics Gideon Bachmann and Antonio Monda Fellini: A Director’s Notebook, a short film by Federico Fellini The Last Sequence, a documentary on Fellini’s lost alternate ending for 8½ Nino Rota: Between Cinema and Concert, a documentary about Fellini’s longtime composer Interviews with actor Sandra Milo, filmmaker Lina Wertmüller, and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro Rare photographs from Bachmann’s collection Gallery of behind-the-scenes and production photos Trailer PLUS: An essay by film critic Stephanie Zacharek Paris, Texas - The Criterion Collection 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray 1984 • 145 minutes • Color • 5.1 surround • 1.66:1 aspect ratio New German Cinema pioneer Wim Wenders brings his keen eye for landscape to the American Southwest in Paris, Texas, a profoundly moving character study written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Sam Shepard. Paris, Texas follows the mysterious, nearly mute drifter Travis (a magnificent Harry Dean Stanton, whose face is a landscape all its own) as he tries to reconnect with his young son, living with his brother (Dean Stockwell) in Los Angeles, and his missing wife (Nastassja Kinski). From this simple setup, Wenders and Shepard produce a powerful statement on codes of masculinity and the myth of the American family, as well as an exquisite visual exploration of a vast, crumbling world of canyons and neon. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Wim Wenders, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features Audio commentary featuring Wenders Archival interviews with Wenders; cinematographer Robby Müller; composer Ry Cooder; actors Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper, Peter Falk, and Hanns Zischler; novelist Patricia Highsmith; and filmmaker Samuel Fuller Interviews with filmmakers Allison Anders and Claire Denis Deleted scenes and Super 8 home movies Gallery of Wenders’ location-scouting photos Behind-the-scenes photos by Robin Holland Trailer English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay by film critic Nick Roddick; interviews with Stanton, writer Sam Shepard, and actors Nastassja Kinski and Dean Stockwell; and excerpts from Wenders’ book of photos Written in the West Eastern Condors - The Criterion Collection Blu-ray 1987 • 98 minutes • Color • Monaural • In Cantonese with English subtitles • 2.39:1 aspect ratio Legendary actor-director Sammo Hung delivers a bazooka blast of pure adrenaline in this exemplar of Hong Kong action cinema at its most entertaining. Drawing inspiration from Hollywood war films like The Dirty Dozen, Eastern Condors follows a ragtag band of Asian American prisoners dropped into Vietnam on a secret suicide mission to prevent a cache of weapons from falling into the hands of the Viet Cong, who are more than ready for a fight. Propelled by a dynamic ensemble cast that includes the ever-charismatic Yuen Biao as a black-market trader and a superhuman Yuen Wah as a giggling martial-arts monster, this rip-roaring spectacle offers a nonstop barrage of turbocharged set pieces that defy death, logic, and gravity itself. BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES 2K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack New audio commentary featuring film critic Tony Rayns 2K digital restoration of the English-dubbed “export cut” of the film Meet the Filmmakers, a new interview with director Sammo Hung Interviews from 2001 with Hung and actor Yuen Wah Eastern Condors Live!, an onstage performance from the 1987 Miss Hong Kong Pageant Teaser and trailers New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by film critic Sean Gilman These aren't up for pre-order on Amazon or Walmart yet, but if your order your discs direct from Criterion you can order them now!Posted Mon Sep 16, 2024 at 10:59 AM PDT by: -
Bringing Out The Discs - HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Sept. 16, 2024Saw a funny video the other day, if you live in Australia you know it is magpie swooping season. Good times (at least for us watching!) Remember for them, it is almost Spring, not Autumn. As we enter the middle of the month, the disc market continues on strong with several great releases. Nope, no rest for us die-hard collectors. You know who you are. Welcome to Volume 5 Episode 16 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of September 15th - September 21st, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- There are no imports to mention this week, however there is one title that could be considered a new release, that would be Reacher: Season Two, which is from Paramount Television. Everything else this week would be considered catalog releases and that is A-OK. Continuing with Paramount, spine number 47 of the Paramount Presents line, Bringing Out The Dead comes out this week. Scorsese, Cage, do I need to say more? Arrow Video is next on the docket with The Chronicles of Riddick, Friday the 13th (2009) and Torso, the latter also is available as an Arrow Store Exclusive Edition. From Shout! Factory this week, Doomsday. Criterion Collection has The Long Good Friday this week. And lastly, Universal Pictures releases Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection, which is another version of the many editions we have already seen. For Thursday releases, first, an upgrade over last week's Blu-ray domestic release, Capelight Pictures brings us Late Night With The Devil. As 4K upgrades go, it is not likely we will get a domestic release of this, so, buy it if that is what you are wanting. Announced literally on Mondaym a 4K mediabook for Mississippi Burning, also from Capelight. Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases include Reacher: Season Two, The Chronicles of Riddick and The Long Good Friday. TV on disc this week includes The Brokenwood Mysteries: Series 10 and The Crown: The Complete Final Season (The Complete Series of The Crown will release on October 15). Caligula: The Ultimate Cut debuts to Blu-ray this week, the 4K has been pushed back a few weeks. Anime highlights include The Great Cleric - The Complete Season, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Set 9 - Stone Ocean Part 2, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie - Scarlet Bond and Ya Boy Kongming!: Complete Collection (Premium Box Set). There would have been quite a few Kino Lorber releases this week, they are burned by the delay bug yet again. But what you can look forward to this week are Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema XX and Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema XXI. Disc replication is now done by fewer companies, so delays are pretty normal, especially for smaller labels. One more checkmark off your Robin Williams list with Man of the Year this week. Believe it or not, there are no Australian imports towards the end of the week. Monday has got a bunch of UK imports though! Notable announcements from last week: Sony Pictures will be bringing us a Frank Capra 20-Film Collection on November 19th, some of them will be 4K. Many onesie twosie titles have been announced and we could get lost if we list them all. Kino Lorber has been the busiest with reveals. If you are getting the Columbia Pictures Classics Volume 5, you are getting the 2019 remake, and just announced is the 1994 edition of Little Women to 4K on November 19th. Each generation seems to have grown up with a blue TV dog in their life. Huckleberry Hound, Blues Clues, Bluey. BBC is offering Bluey Seasons 1 -3 as an Amazon Exclusive blu-ray on November 5th. More TV on blu-ray and 4K is great!! Still not OFFICIAL but it would appear that Godzilla: Minus One will have its USA release on November 19th. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? Synapse Films Delivers Mike Mendez's Killers and The Convent to Disc October 8thSynapse Films is getting ready to release a double dose of Mike Mendez films on Blu-ray with Killers and The Convent arriving on October 8. The Convent will also be available on 4K UHD Blu-ray. Killers - Blu-ray Convicted killers, the James brothers, Odessa (Dave Larsen) and Kyle (David Gunn), have escaped death row and found the perfect family to prey upon on a particularly dark and stormy night. What the brothers do not know is that the Ryan family has darker and more disturbing secrets than they could ever imagine. What begins as a home invasion turns for a fight for survival from this violently sinister family. From the opening moments set to Iron Butterfly’s iconic “In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida” to its blood-soaked finale, Mendez’s feature debut is a profanely dark, comedic look at America and violence in the tradition of Natural Born Killers.
