Shop HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Week of Nov. 5, 2024 - It's Your Civic DutyWe're starting the first week of November and a rather busy release week at that. We have seen so many months of slow starts and ginormous ends that this month is an anomaly indeed. Oh and don't forget to get out and vote. Welcome to Volume 5 Episode 23 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of November 3rd - November 9th, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- UK Import Monday has two interesting releases. One of those deluxe edition StudioCanal Vintage Classics releases first, The Third Man (1949): 75th Anniversary Edition. It's got swag, it's got extras. Sweet looking pack for those of us that like collecting these editions. Continuing with swag editions, 101 Films' version of The Sword and the Sorcerer. Yeah, Shout! Factory did a decent release in the US, but it was a bit more plain in the packaging department. On to Domestic Tuesday, with four New Releases. First up from Warner Bros., M. Night Shyamalan's Trap. Second on the new release docket, a remake of the original, The Crow. Also available as two different SteelBooks, a Walmart Exclusive and an Amazon Exclusive. Third on the list, Kevin Smith's The 4:30 Movie, which the 4K release is only available as an Amazon Exclusive SteelBook. We have seen this configuration in the past with Best Buy Exclusives. And the fourth title is of a category we do not see very often in the 4K New Release calendar, anime feature film One Piece Film Red - Movie. Shout Factory gets multiple delays of titles originally slated for this week, but they do have two SteelBooks, athough the titles themselves are not new to 4K. Those titles are John Carpenter's Escape From New York and Krampus: The Naughty Cut. The delay bug strikes again, wiping two of Kino Lorber's titles off this week's 4K release calendar. Maybe they should just automatically add 2 weeks to any future announcements, just to be safe as it seems to happen a lot. We do see two releases from them this week though, bumped from previous release dates, those would be Fright (1971) and Rules of Engagement. Criterion Collection this week offers 1954's Godzilla. Universal upgrades the 2019 comedy/romance Last Christmas to 4K. Well Go USA makes an appearance with You Gotta Believe, a sports/drama with Luke Wilson. Paramount has TWO movies this week. Starting with war drama We Were Soldiers with Mel Gibson, then the 70th Anniversary Edition classic film White Christmas with Bing Crosby. You've probably heard of this line of special edition releases, and they have been mostly overseas releases. This week though LionsGate offers us a Titans of Cult edition of John Wick, as an Amazon Exclusive. It also features a Dolby Vision grade for the first time too. And last but not least, a somewhat double-dip at that, Warner Bros/MGM offers us The Wizard of Oz as a SteelBook/fat-pack. This package has been done with so many releases of in the UK. We could hope we would get more of these up front, not as double-dips. It's a handsome looking set. On Wednesday, Turbine Medien Group Germany releases FOUR Hellraiser: Judgment skus: Hellraiser: Judgment - Turbine Medien 4K UHD SteelBook Slipcover D Hellraiser: Judgment - Turbine Medien 4K UHD SteelBook Slipcover C Hellraiser: Judgment - Turbine Medien 4K UHD SteelBook Slipcover B Hellraiser: Judgment - Turbine Medien 4K UHD SteelBook Slipcover A Friday, via Amazon US, Imprint Films' Limited Edition of Suspiria (2018) can be yours for the right price. This week we also report that Kill Bill: Volume 1 and 2 will be coming to 4K on January 17th. 4K Release Calendar 2K/BD Release Calendar Which titles are you buying this week? What's Up With That? Sony Celebrates 35 Years of Nothing with Seinfeld on 4K UHD & Blu-ray December 17th - but there's a catch!Who would have imagined a show about nothing featuring some of the worst characters imaginable lasting ten seasons let alone remaining the cultural phenomenon it is today? Concluding their incredible 100th Anniversary of Columbia Pictures, they're tipping their hat to the 35th Anniversary of Seinfeld with 4K UHD and Blu-ray disc releases. So this news got brewing early this morning when we received a ton of messages from fans concerning the 4K listing on Amazon. Before I even had my first of my daily dozen cups of Columbia's best export, I was fielding questions about whether I knew this or knew that, yadda, yadda, blah, blah-blah, blah. Now with incredible grace, Sony has finally given us complete details for their 4K UHD and Blu-ray sets dated to drop December 17th. With great relief, I am pleased to report that Seinfeld: The Complete Series - 4K UHD will be delivered pressed on 24 discs presented in its original 1.33:1 broadcast aspect ratio (THANK YOU SANTA!) with HDR10, and DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio! Seinfeld: The Complete Series - 4K UHD Now here's where things get stranger... When it comes to the 1080p counterpart, Seinfeld: The Complete Series - Blu-ray will be presented in the horribly cropped 1.78:1 versions we've seen on streaming spread over 24 discs and offering DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. Seinfeld: The Complete Series - Blu-ray Why is it the 4K gets the proper aspect ratio and the Blu-ray gets the ugly cropped version? What's up with that? Truthfully I don't know beyond the speculation that the 1080p masters were ready to go and they wouldn't have to reauthor anything in the lower resolution after the new 4K scans. The other eye line I can see is that Sony views 4K UHD as the niche preservationist format that it is and is catering to please the people willing to payout about $100 more for the set than standard Blu-ray. Mind you that's just a guess. Beyond aspect ratio differences, both sets look to have the same extra features - which weren't detailed in the PR so I have to assume they're the same archival materials assembled for the DVDs. So, grab your fork, knife, and favorite candy bar and get those pre-orders in! All Treats, No Tricks - HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Oct. 29, 2024How did ya do last week? Did you have more will power than I did and keep it under a hundred bucks? Some of those releases could have been released a different week, agreed? As we enter our last week of October and approach November, there is still not much of a reprieve for volume of releases. It's like a one-two punch! Oh and hey, HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Welcome to Volume 5 Episode 22 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of October 27th - November 2nd, as well as a look at announcements from last week. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases- UK Import Monday begins with Second Sight and their release of Late Night with the Devil. This one comes in one of their well known Limited Edition fat-packs and a Standard Edition as well. I took one for the team and ordered the Limited Edition 4K, so expect a US announcement any time now to replace 1 of the 2 editions you got on blu-ray. StudioCanal releases two Cult Classics titles, previously as SteelBooks, this week as standard case releases, Orca and Red Sun. Domestic Tuesday offer a lot, just no New Releases. Where to begin is often times a challenge but I usually go somewhat alphabetically. Two titles from Paramount this week with A to Z, Addams Family Values and Zodiac. Kino Lorber continues to be plagued with delayed releases, but what we can confirm as coming out this week is Baby Blood (Kino Cult #19). From Warner Bros this week, the 1966 animated classic Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. Shout! Factory is up next with a pair of 'Collector's Edition' releases, Drag Me To Hell and Shocker. Not sure if what I am seeing is true, but it is quite possible that both Arrow Video's releases of Trick 'r Treat are Sold Out. There is the Standard Release and the Arrow Store Exclusive release. This one enjoys quite the cult following so it's possible they've already sold through their run. Standard edition Vinegar Syndrome releases this week (via Amazon) include Delirium: Photo of Gioia and Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf. Turbine Medien has the German release of Peter Jackson's The Frighteners as a 4K SteelBook with a street date of Tuesday. Blu-ray releases- Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases? Nope, not this week. But we already got em in the past. Monday UK imports... there are a few interesting ones. Have a look see: Freud's Last Session (UK Import) Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984) (UK Import) Paddington Bear: The Complete Collection (1975-1986) (UK Import Limited Pop Up Edition) Paddington Bear: The Complete Collection (1975-1986) (UK Import) J-Horror Rising - Arrow Video Blu-ray Limited Edition Columbia Horror - Indicator Series Limited Edition (Region B UK Import) El Vampiro: Two Bloodsucking Tales from Mexico - Indicator Series Limited Edition (UK Import) Daiei Gothic: Japanese Ghost Stories - Limited Edition (UK Import) Dogra Magra - Limited Edition (UK Import) A Quiet Place in the Country (UK Import Limited Edition) Domestic releases Tuesday looks a little bit daunting, but just like most months towards the last week, those include Vinegar Syndrome's site exclusive releases. Don't get me wrong, it's still a pretty busy calendar without those titles. And I do encourage you to shop their stuff too. Amidst the wave of neo-noir thrillers that swept American cinema in the 1990s, few films made as much impact as The Usual Suspects, which revolutionized the genre, won two Academy Awards® and is still regarded as one of the greatest crime films ever made. After a brutal massacre on a cargo ship off the coast of Los Angeles leaves 27 men dead, Special Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) interrogates one of the only two survivors, small-time con artist Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey). During the interview, Kint tells Kujan of how he was recruited by the fearsome crime lord Keyser Söze to commit a series of daring heists with four other crooked misfits: Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), Mike McManus (Stephen Baldwin), Fred Fenster (Benicio del Toro) and Todd Hockey (Kevin Pollak). But as Kint's account of the events leading up to the massacre becomes more convoluted, Kujan becomes increasingly skeptical and determined to discover the identity of the elusive Keyser Söze.With an unforgettably twisty and tightly written Oscar®-winning script by Christopher McQuarrie, The Usual Suspects is an unmissable entry in the canon of American indie cinema.Special Features and Technical Specs: 4K RESTORATION from the original negative approved by cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel DOLBY VISION/HDR PRESENTATION Original lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 and 2.0 Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing Audio commentary with director Bryan Singer and writer Christopher McQuarrie Audio commentary with editor and composer John Ottman The Devil in the Details, an archival interview with Newton Thomas Sigel Archival interview with John Ottman Round Up: Deposing the Usual Suspects, a two-part featurette delving into the creation and production of The Usual Suspects with clips, interviews with key figures, and footage from the making of the film Keyser Söze (Lie or Legend?), an archival featurette Heisting Cannes with The Usual Suspects, archival footage from the film's world premiere at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival Introducing The Usual Suspects, an original EPK featurette Deleted scenes with introduction by John Ottman Gag reel Interview outtakes with Chazz Palminteri, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollak, Benicio del Toro, and Bryan Singer International trailer U.S. trailer with introduction by John Ottman TV spots Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Tommy Pocket Collector's booklet featuring new writing by Barry Forshaw Double-sided fold-out poster featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Tommy Pocket Incubus (1966) - 4K UHD Arrow Limited Edition Incubus (1966) - Arrow Limited Edition Blu-ray also available It is often said that films about the Devil are cursed with bad luck, but Leslie Stevens' Incubus might be the most cursed of them all. By the time it premiered in 1966, two of its stars had tragically taken their own lives; the eccentric director's insistence on filming in the obscure Esperanto language ensured it failed to receive any distribution; and it was nearly lost forever when the original elements were believed lost in a fire. Decades passed until it was finally saved and unveiled to the public in all its unholy glory!Wounded in battle, soldier Marc (William Shatner, just prior to being cast in Star Trek) ventures to the remote village of Nomen Tuum to find a well where the waters are said to be blessed with healing powers. Japanese New Wave auteur and longtime director of the Ultraman series Akio Jissoji (This Transient Life, Mandala) harnesses his distinctive stylistic sheen in his story of a mad mirror maker, "Mirror Hell". "Caterpillar" sees the singular vision of cult director Hisayasu Sato (The Bedroom, Naked Blood) at its most grotesque, in his portrait of a wounded war veteran who returns from the frontline as little more than a bloody torso, helpless to defend himself against the increasingly perverted caprices of an embittered wife. Finally, a famous actor is subjected to the obsessive attentions of her limo driver in "Crawling Bugs", the directorial debut of internationally acclaimed manga artist Atsushi Kaneko (Bambi and Her Pink Gun).Produced by the same team behind Ichi the Killer and Uzumaki, and with a cast featuring some of Japan's top stars, including Tadanobu Asano (Maboroshi, Silence) and Ryuhei Matsuda (Blue Spring, Gohatto), Rampo Noir is a stylistic tour-de-force that vividly evokes the "erotic grotesque" worlds created by Japan's pioneering proponent of horror and mystery fiction.Special Features and Technical Specs: Original lossless Japanese stereo audio Optional newly translated English subtitles Brand new audio commentary by Japanese film experts Jasper Sharp and Alexander Zahlten Another World, a new interview with Suguru Takeuchi, director of "Mars's Canal" A Moving Transformation, a new interview with Hisayasu Sato, director of "Caterpillar" Butterfly Queen, a new interview with Atsushi Kaneko, manga artist and director of "Crawling Bugs" Hall of Mirrors, a new interview with cinematographer Masao Nakabori about working with Akio Jissoji and "Mirror Hell" The Butterfly Effect, a new interview with Akiko Ashizawa, the cinematographer of "Caterpillar" Looking in the Mirror, a new interview with actor Yumi Yoshiyuki about "Mirror Hell" Archive stage greeting footage with the cast and directors from the Japanese premiere of Rampo Noir Crossing the Lens, a feature-length making-of documentary by Tatsuya Fukushima from 2006 Image gallery Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Luke Insect Illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Eugene Thacker and Seth Jacobowitz All of these titles are now listed in the Arrow Video shop and should be available for preorder at other retailers shortly.Posted Sun Oct 27, 2024 at 09:37 AM PDT by: -
