Samsung Exits 4K Blu-ray & HD Blu-ray Player Market in US[teaser]No future Blu-ray player models are expected from the company in the US.[/teaser] According to reports by Forbes and CNET, Samsung has exited the 4K Blu-ray and HD Blu-ray player market in the US. A new high-end 4K model was rumored for release later this year, but following no announcements at CES 2019, it's now been confirmed that the company has no plans to produce any new models in the US going forward. With that said, it's possible that the company could continue producing players in other regions. While no specific reason has been given for the decision, Forbes speculates that the move has been made in response to the relatively niche nature of the 4K Blu-ray player space, increased market share from competitors like Sony and Panasonic, and Samsung's lack of Dolby Vision support. Though two 2018 Samsung 4K Blu-ray player models were announced at last year's CES, it does not actually appear that they were ever released in the US. This makes the company's 2017 lineup, led by the UBD-M9500, as its final run of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players. The news of Samsung's exit from the 4K Blu-ray player market comes just as the first wave of HDR10+ capable 4K Blu-ray discs are being released from 20th Century Fox. Samsung is one of the primary backers of the new dynamic metadata HDR format, and is the only manufacturer in the US to currently support the tech through its TVs. Though a firmware update has been released to support HDR10+ playback via the company's 2017 4K Blu-ray player lineup, Samsung's absence from the disc hardware market going forward could prove to be a drawback for the format. Outside of Samsung, Oppo Digital announced its own exit from the 4K Blu-ray player market last year. Meanwhile, Sony and Panasonic revealed a few new 2019 4K Blu-ray player models at CES last month. LG, however, has not detailed any new 2019 models yet. Sources: Forbes, CNETPosted Sat Feb 16, 2019 at 09:50 AM PST by: -
Coming Soon to Streaming: CATCH-22, TRIPLE FRONTIER, and More[teaser]A new Hulu adaptation of the classic Joseph Heller novel headlines this week's crop of streaming trailers.[/teaser] Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video have all released new previews and info for several of their upcoming series and films. Here's a full rundown of titles scheduled to arrive on each service: Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1 (Hulu, Now Streaming) - This is the story of Air Jordan 1, the shoe that tapped a cultural nerve deep inside a generation, unlocked the voice of so many voiceless and transcended sports to become a global phenomenon. Beyond the shoe’s iconic image and deeper than the legend of its namesake – Michael Jordan – Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1 explores AJ1's role in giving birth to sneaker culture, re-shaping the game of basketball and the very identity of the NBA. It revolutionized the business of the professional athlete as a brand and radically disrupted a generation to define our modern global culture on and off the court. Through a riveting journey of powerful voices that also include Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, actor Anthony Anderson, DJ and record producer DJ Khaled across all aspects of culture from then and now, the film chronicles the shoe's explosive impact on history and our modern world. Shrill (Hulu, March 15) - From Executive Producers Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks comes Shrill, a comedy series starring Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live) as Annie, a fat young woman who wants to change her life — but not her body. Annie is trying to start her career while juggling bad boyfriends, a sick parent, and a perfectionist boss. The Act (Hulu, March 20) - A seasonal anthology series that tells startling, stranger-than-fiction true crime stories. The first season follows Gypsy Blanchard, a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother. Her quest for independence opens a Pandora’s box of secrets, one that ultimately leads to murder. Catch-22 (Hulu, May 17) - Christopher Abbott is Yossarian, a bombardier, whose frantic obsession every time he goes up on a mission is “to come down alive”. His odds of success at such a simple aim keep getting worse, because Colonel Cathcart (Kyle Chandler) keeps raising the number of missions the men have to fly. More than the retreating Germans, the real enemy for Yossarian and his rag-tag bunch of friends is the bureaucracy of the military, inverting logic at every turn. The pinnacle of this is Catch-22, a military by-law which states that if you fly your missions, you’re crazy, and don’t have to fly them; all you have to do is ask. But if you ask not to, then you’re sane, and so you have to fly them. George Clooney stars as the barking mad, parade-obsessed Scheisskopf. Hugh Laurie is the mellow, slightly checked-out Major de Coverley. Clooney directs the six-episode series, along with Grant Heslov and Ellen Kuras. Chef's Table: Season 6 (Netflix, February 22) - The Sixth Season of the critically acclaimed series brings you four new groundbreaking stories of resilience, culture and culinary excellence. Featured Chefs will include Asma Khan (India + UK), Dario Cecchini (Italy), Sean Brock (South Carolina), and Mashama Bailey (Georgia). Juanita (Netflix, March 8) - Fed up with her deadbeat grown kids and marginal urban existence, Juanita takes a Greyhound bus to Paper Moon, Montana where she reinvents herself and finds her mojo. Starring Alfre Woodard, Adam Beach, and Ashlie Atkinson. Directed by Clark Johnson. Triple Frontier (Netflix, March 13) - A group of former Special Forces operatives (Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal) reunite to plan a heist in a sparsely populated multi-border zone of South America. For the first time in their prestigious careers these unsung heroes undertake this dangerous mission for self instead of country. But when events take an unexpected turn and threaten to spiral out of control, their skills, their loyalties and their morals are pushed to a breaking point in an epic battle for survival. Directed by Academy Award nominee J.C. Chandor (Margin Call, All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year) and co-written by Chandor and Academy Award winner Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty). Love Death + Robots (Netflix, March 15) - Sentient dairy products, werewolf soldiers, robots gone wild, garbage monsters, cyborg bounty hunters, alien spiders and blood-thirsty demons from hell - all converge in eighteen NSFW animated stories. Presented by Tim Miller & David Fincher. Catastrophe Season 4 (Amazon Prime Video, March 15) - In the fourth season of the Emmy-nominated comedy, Rob and Sharon’s relationship is pushed to the limit. Rob is sentenced to community service after his drunk driving accident while Sharon learns how to trust him again. This leads to exploring new life changes including career, religion, and health. Their love and humor have survived the ups and downs, but will it be enough to keep them afloat? Hanna Season 1 (Amazon Prime Video, March 29) - Follows the journey of an extraordinary young girl raised in the forest, as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is. -A current Netflix subscription starts at $13 per month for HD streaming and $16 per month for Ultra HD streaming. - A current Amazon Prime subscription costs $119 per year or $13 per month. Likewise, Prime Instant Video is available as a standalone service for $9 per month. - A current Hulu subscription starts at $6 per month with commercials. In addition, ad-free playback is available for $12 per month and Live TV bundle is available for $45. Coming Soon to Blu-ray: Criterion May 2019 Titles[teaser]David Lynch's Blue Velvet, Michael Haneke's Funny Games, and more are all in the works for Blu-ray.[/teaser] In an early announcement to retailers, Criterion is preparing Blue Velvet, One Sings, the Other Doesn’t, Let the Sunshine In, House of Games, Funny Games (1997), and The Heiress for Blu-ray throughout the month of May. The Heiress (May 7) - Directed with a keen sense of ambiguity by William Wyler, this film based on a hit stage adaptation of Henry James’s Washington Square pivots on a question of motive. When shy, fragile Catherine Sloper (Olivia de Havilland, in a heartbreaking, Oscar-winning turn), the daughter of a wealthy New York doctor, begins to receive calls from the handsome spendthrift Morris Townsend (Montgomery Clift), she becomes possessed by the promise of romance. Are his smoldering professions of love sincere, as she believes they are? Or is Catherine’s calculating father (Ralph Richardson) correct in judging Morris a venal fortune seeker? A graceful drawing-room drama boasting Academy Award–winning costume design by Edith Head, The Heiress is also a piercing character study riven by emotional uncertainty and lacerating cruelty, in a triumph of classic Hollywood filmmaking at its most psychologically nuanced. New, restored 4K digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray New conversation between screenwriter Jay Cocks and film critic Farran Smith Nehme New program about the film’s costumes featuring costume collector and historian Larry McQueen The Costume Designer, a restored 1950 short film featuring costume designer Edith Head Appearance by actor Olivia de Havilland on a 1979 episode of The Paul Ryan Show Excerpts from a 1973 tribute to director William Wyler on The Merv Griffin Show, featuring Wyler, de Havilland, and actors Bette Davis and Walter Pidgeon Wyler’s acceptance speech from the American Film Institute’s 1976 Salute to William Wyler Interview with actor Ralph Richardson filmed in 1981 for the documentary Directed by William Wyler Trailer PLUS: An essay by critic Pamela Hutchinson Order the Blu-ray Funny Games (1997 (May 14) - Michael Haneke’s most notorious provocation, Funny Games spares no detail in its depiction of the agony of a bourgeois family held captive at their vacation home by a pair of white-gloved young men. In a series of escalating “games,” the sadistic duo subject their victims to unspeakable physical and psychological torture over the course of a night. A home-invasion thriller in which the genre’s threat of bloodshed is made stomach-churningly real, the film ratchets up shocks even as its executioners interrupt the action to address the audience, drawing queasy attention to the way that cinema milks pleasure from pain and stokes our appetite for atrocity. With this controversial treatise on violence and entertainment, Haneke issued a summation of his cinematic philosophy, implicating his audience in a spectacle of unbearable cruelty. New 2K digital restoration, supervised by director Michael Haneke, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray New interviews with Haneke and actor Arno Frisch New interview with film historian Alexander Horwath Press conference from the 1997 Cannes Film Festival featuring Haneke and actors Susanne Lothar and Ulrich Mühe Trailer New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by critic Bilge Ebiri Order the Blu-ray House of Games (May 14) - The Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright and screenwriter David Mamet sat in the director’s chair for the first time for this sly, merciless thriller. Lindsay Crouse stars as a best-selling author and therapist who wants to help a client by making restitution for the money he owes to a gambler. After she meets the attractive cardsharp (Joe Mantegna), her own compulsions take hold as he lures her into his world of high-stakes deception. Packed with razor-sharp dialogue delivered with even-keeled precision by a cast of Mamet regulars, House of Games is as psychologically acute as it is full of twists and turns, a rich character study told with the cold calculation of a career con artist targeting his next mark. High-definition digital transfer, supervised by director of photography Juan Ruiz Anchía, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray Audio commentary from 2007 featuring director David Mamet and consultant and actor Ricky Jay Interviews with actors Lindsay Crouse and Joe Mantegna from 2007 David Mamet on “House of Games,” a short documentary shot on location during the film’s preparation and production Detail from a storyboard of a short con not used in the film Trailer PLUS: An essay by critic Kent Jones and excerpts from Mamet’s introduction to the published screenplay Order the Blu-ray Let the Sunshine In (May 21) - Two luminaries of French cinema, Claire Denis and Juliette Binoche, unite for the first time in this piercing look at the elusive nature of true love, and the extent to which we are willing to betray ourselves in its pursuit. In a richly layered performance, Binoche plays Isabelle, a successful painter in Paris whose apparent independence belies what she desires most: real romantic fulfillment. Isabelle reveals deep wells of yearning, vulnerability, and resilience as she tumbles into relationships with all the wrong men. Shot in burnished tones by Denis’s longtime collaborator Agnès Godard and featuring a mischievous appearance by Gérard Depardieu, Let the Sunshine In finds bleak humor in a cutting truth: we are all, no matter our age, fools for love. 4K digital master, approved by cinematographer Agnès Godard, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray New interviews with director Claire Denis and actor Juliette Binoche Voilà l’enchaînement (2014), a short film directed by Denis and adapted from a text by author Christine Angot, featuring actors Norah Krief and Alex Descas Trailer New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by critic Stephanie Zacharek Order the Blu-ray One Sings, the Other Doesn’t (May 28) - In the early 1960s in Paris, two young women become friends. Pomme is an aspiring singer. Suzanne is a pregnant country girl unable to support a third child. Pomme lends Suzanne the money for an illegal abortion, but a sudden tragedy soon separates them. Over a decade later, they reunite at a demonstration and pledge to keep in touch via postcard, as each of their lives is irrevocably changed by the women’s liberation movement. A buoyant hymn to sisterly solidarity rooted in the hard-won victories of a generation of women, One Sings, the Other Doesn’t is one of Agnès Varda’s warmest and most politically trenchant films, a feminist musical for the ages. New 2K digital restoration, supervised by director Agnès Varda and cinematographer Charlie Van Damme, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray Women Are Naturally Creative, a 1977 documentary directed by Katja Raganelli, featuring an interview with Varda shot during the making of the film, plus on-set interviews with actors Valérie Mairesse and Thérèse Liotard Réponse de femmes, a 1975 short film by Varda, on the question “What is a woman?” Plaisir d’amour en Iran, a 1976 short film by Varda, starring Mairesse and Ali Raffi Trailer New English subtitle translation PLUS: An essay by critic Amy Taubin and excerpts from the film’s original press book Order the Blu-ray Blue Velvet (May 28) - Home from college, Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) makes an unsettling discovery: a severed human ear, lying in a field. In the mystery that follows, by turns terrifying and darkly funny, David Lynch burrows deep beneath the picturesque surfaces of small-town life. Driven to investigate, Jeffrey finds himself drawing closer to his fellow amateur sleuth, Sandy Williams (Laura Dern), as well as their prime suspect, lounge singer Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini)—and facing the fury of Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper), a psychopath who will stop at nothing to keep Dorothy in his grasp. With intense performances and hauntingly powerful scenes and images, Blue Velvet is an unforgettable vision of innocence lost, and one of the most influential American films of the past few decades. New 4K digital restoration, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray, both supervised by director David Lynch Alternate original stereo soundtrack “Blue Velvet” Revisited, a feature-length meditation on the making of the film by Peter Braatz, filmed on-set during the production The Lost Footage, fifty-one minutes of deleted scenes and alternate takes assembled by Lynch Mysteries of Love, a seventy-minute documentary from 2002 on the making of the film Trailer More! Apple Reportedly Set to Reveal New Streaming Service in March[teaser]Another streaming service is on the way.[/teaser] According to reports by Variety and Bloomberg, Apple is set to officially announce its new streaming video platform at a press event scheduled for March 25. With that said, the service itself is not likely to launch until the summer or fall. Though full details on the platform are still forthcoming, Apple's subscription video service will offer a collection of exclusive original series and movies, including content from filmmakers and talent like JJ Abrams, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Octavia Spencer, Jason Momoa, Jane Krakowski, and Hailee Steinfeld. Several of those stars and creators are expected to attend the March event, where Apple is likely to debut the first footage from its upcoming streaming titles. And beyond original programming, the streaming app will also offer integrated access to add-on subscriptions from other platforms for an extra fee -- similar to the Amazon Channels library available through Prime Video. Showtime, Starz, and other offerings from CBS and Viacom have all been named as likely inclusions, and HBO is reportedly in talks as well. Meanwhile, outside of Apple's new entertainment streaming platform, the company is also planning to reveal a separate news subscription service at the same March press event. According to Bloomberg, the news service will be integrated into the Apple News app, allowing users to pay a monthly fee for a bundle of different news publications and magazines. Official details and a launch window for Apple's upcoming streaming platform, original programming, and news service are expected to be formally announced on March 25. Amazon Teases LORD OF THE RINGS Series with New Map of Middle-Earth[teaser]"I wisely started with a map" -- J.R.R. Tolkien.[/teaser] In anticipation for the streaming platform's upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel series, Amazon has released an interactive map of Middle-earth via its newly launched Lord of the Rings Twitter page. Though the map does not include any location names or other specific details, users are free to zoom and scroll around the terrain. And as pointed out by Twitter user @tolkienthot, the map apparently depicts Middle-earth during its post-War of Wrath period since it does not include Beleriand. This points to the show taking place in the Second or Third Age. You can check out Amazon's original tweet embedded below or CLICK HERE to explore the interactive map yourself. Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, pic.twitter.com/unJj1Bpde1 — The Lord of the Rings on Prime (@LOTRonPrime) February 15, 2019 While plot details for the new series have not been announced yet, the upcoming show will be spearheaded by writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay. Amazon has also reportedly been in talks with director Peter Jackson about his potential involvement with the series, but the current status of those talks is unknown. Jackson previously directed the big screen Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies for New Line Cinema. Amazon's $250 million agreement with the Tolkien estate, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema covers the small screen rights to the Lord of the Rings franchise for a five-season commitment. Likewise, the deal also includes the potential for a spin-off series. With that said, in order to be in compliance with the contract, Amazon has to get production rolling on the project within two years. And it's looking like the whole endeavor could end up costing more than Smaug's treasure. All in, the budget estimate for the proposed five-season run is over $1 billion. An exact release date for the new Lord of the Rings series has not been announced yet, but the show will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. A current Amazon Prime subscription costs $119 per year or $13 per month. Likewise, Prime Instant Video is available as a standalone service for $9 per month.
