Entertainment Spending Up Five Percent - Blu-ray Sales Soar[teaser]DVD spending is down significantly, but Blu-ray helped pick up the industry as a whole - if that's not great news for the format, we don't know what is. [/teaser] The Digital Entertainment Group's latest survey indicates that high definition packaged media is on the rise in a big way. And yes, when they say "high definition packaged media" they clearly mean Blu-ray. Unless there are still HD DVDs floating around out there, but we're just going to go ahead and make the assumption. Blu-ray disc sales rose by 58 percent this year, with a 60 percent increase in catalog titles like 'Citizen Kane,' 'The Big Lebowski' and, of course, 'Star Wars.' That's great news, but giant sales numbers for titles like this doesn't necessarily mean that the format as a whole is on the rise. We need something more solid, and we got it. Blu-ray player sales increased by 52 percent over last year. Certainly there are some upgrades in there, but the majority of that seems to be first-time Blu-ray owners, marking a huge shift in mainstream consumer adoption. The DEG puts the number of Blu-ray enabled homes at a whopping 33.5 million. So how much did Blu-ray help the overall increase in entertainment spending? A lot. Blu-ray was up 58 percent, electronic sellthrough was up 13 percent and VOD increased by five percent. DVD sales are way down again, rental revenue is down again and brick and mortar stores are hurting. Only one format is truly thriving, and that's Blu-ray. Sony Restructures its TV Business, Splitting it into Three[teaser]The company hopes that by splitting up the divisions, they'll be able to encourage more accountability and plug some of the leaks. [/teaser] It's no secret that Sony's been struggling quite a bit when it comes to the TV business. They're not in a good place and they seem absolutely unable to take on competitors like Samsung and Vizio. A change in structure seems to be the necessary move. Sony is taking some big actions to not only pinpoint the issues but fix them. Starting November 1st the company will split the TV business into three different divisions, one for LCDs, one for outsourced products and one for high-end next-gen TVs. This should allow each division to focus more clearly on what they need to do and help Sony to find the problems in their business models and fix them. Another big move that Sony will be making is to sell off its 50 percent share in an LCD venture to Samsung, which they expect to do by the end of the year. ABC/Disney Sign New Deals to Bring More Content to Amazon and Netflix[teaser]New content includes 'Felicity,' 'Greek,' more from Marvel, and 'Lost.'[/teaser] The folks at ABC/Disney are all about streaming, and have signed a deal with Netflix and a deal with Amazon on the same day that gives even more content to the pair of companies. The Amazon Prime deal promises episodes from 'Grey's Antatomy,' 'Lost,' the extremely underrated 'X-Men: Evolution' and a few others. In all, 800 new episodes are ready to rock on Amazon. It's hard to tell whether the Netflix deal is bigger or if the press release just lists more titles, but in addition to mentioning everything 'Amazon' did, Netflix has mentioned plenty of new Disney programming like 'The Suite Life on Deck,' 'Hannah Montana' and 'Phineas & Ferb.' No matter how you look at it, it's a good day to subscribe to a streaming service. Source: Home Entertainment MagazinePosted Tue Nov 1, 2011 at 07:00 AM PDT by: -
