Only Half of Smart TVs are Connected to the Internet[teaser]According to a recent study, only 60% of those with connected sets use them for streaming. [/teaser] The NPD group conducted a poll recently detailing the use of smart TV features and found that a surprising amount of people aren't even touching them. Half of smart TV owners don't even have their sets connected to the internet, meaning they have a whole feature set that they aren't even looking at. Of the 50% of people that actually have their sets connected, 60% use them to watch streaming content while only 10% use their sets for other online activities like casual games, Facebook, reading ebooks and video calling – a surprising number considering how hard companies pushed Skype a few years back. The big question of course is why. It's unclear from the data whether these folks are getting their content somewhere else or simply ignoring connected features. Set-top boxes and HTPCs were not accounted for in the study. Source: Home Media MagazinePosted Fri Dec 28, 2012 at 11:00 AM PST by: -
Westinghouse Will Debut 50, 55, 65 and 110 Inch UHDTVs[teaser]All of these new sets are due out in the first quarter of 2013. [/teaser] Westinghouse TVs tend to be less about quality and more about economy, but it looks like they're making an effort to attract the high-end crowd. The company is making not only the 110 inch UHDTV we already knew about, but 50, 55 and 65 inch sets as well, all sized to fit the average living room. They're also sized to fit through your door, unlike their big brother. "Our new UHDTV lineup, and the value that it offers to consumers, will change expectations across the entire TV marketplace," says Westinghouse VP Ray Rourke. "We believe that consumers will be amazed by the experience they can expect from these displays and delighted with the affordability." There are two big things that we're waiting to find out about these sets and the first, of course, is how good they look. If Westinghouse pulled out the stops on these sets, they could be contenders for some that want to get into 4K. Price is the other detail we need. A low priced 4K set could start getting people interested, even if it's not the top of the line. Source: Electronic HousePosted Fri Dec 28, 2012 at 09:00 AM PST by: -

'Argo' Announced and Detailed for Blu-ray[teaser]One of the best films of 2012 will be available on Blu-ray in February. [/teaser] In an early announcement to retailers, Warner/Viz Media is readying 'Argo' for Blu-ray on February 19. Based on real events, the dramatic thriller "Argo" chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis, focusing on the little-known role that the CIA and Hollywood played—information that was not declassified until many years after the event. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, the Canadian and American governments ask the CIA to intervene. The CIA turns to their top "exfiltration" specialist, Tony Mendez, to come up with a plan to get the six Americans safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies. The Blu-ray/DVD/Ultraviolet combo pack will feature 1080p video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and supplements include: Feature Length Picture in Picture: Eye Witness Account; Audio Commentary with Director Ben Affleck; Rescued from Tehran: We Were There; Argo: Absolute Authenticity; Argo: The CIA & Hollywood Connection; and Escape From Iran: The Hollywood Option. Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $35.99.
