Attendees at this year's San Diego Comic-Con (July 24-27) are going to get a premier look at the new 'Skylanders Trap Team' figurines featured in the game's 'Dark Edition.' Activision's mega-franchise, inspiration for both 'Disney Infinity' and Nintendo's amiibo platform, is adding a few new twists to the formula this time around. Though the aged gaming crowd might not be interested, their children are essentially morphing the industry. Here's what's new.
Those are traps, a sort of reverse toys-to-life mechanism. The physical objects interact with the game world, much like the popular figurines, but these ones are meant to "trap" villains inside so kids can carry them around and use them elsewhere. They might not have the appeal of a tiny dragon, so we'll see if these things are around in a year. Nevertheless, they're included in the 'Skylanders Trap Team: Dark Edition' when it comes out Oct. 5 for the Xbox One, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and Wii. Yes, it's a blanket-release Activision game. Also included in the Dark Edition are three new Skylander models, black and silver editions of old favorites.
The 'Dark Edition' will go for $100. Parents, get those holiday accounts ready.
