Nearly Four Minutes of Pure 'Fortnite' Gameplay

Alpha test opening up in the fall.

Since revealing its Unreal Engine 4 showcase 'Fortnite' a couple of years a go, Epic Games has been pretty coy on the base-defense/scavenger game. That changed today, as the developer is ramping up efforts to sign up alpha testers with the purest gameplay we've seen so far.

As you can see, the game follows a simlar loop as 'Minecraft' and 'Don't Starve,' asking a cooperative troup of players to scrounge around for materials and build up their fort by day, then defend it from a maniacal force by night. The gameplay swaps dramatically at the halfway mark in the video, rivaling 'Sunset Overdrive' in cartoony weaponized zaniness

Epic is seeking out testers for the game's alpha right now, which you can sign up for here. It's set to start with waves of invites sometime in "early fall." Right now, the game is being developed as a free-to-play, PC-exclusive title, though Epic is open to more platforms at a later date.

Rest assured, even if you don't get into the alpha, Epic is planning on "throwing the doors open to everyone" sometime next year, according to the game's FAQ, which assumes an open beta likely to roll into the full release.
