Ah yes, what it feels like to go broke. 65, D&D, Violet Evergarden, Criterion, Arrow Video all beckoning. A relatively busy 4K Tuesday and a pretty large blu-ray slate too. Thieves with honor that are not Robin Hood, hmmmmm.
Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 52 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of May 28th - June 3rd, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
New releases first. We have moved the Cocaine Bear 4K UK import to 'Postponed' as it still seems unavailable to order, despite having a Monday release date. So, on to domestic Tuesday releases.
From Sony Pictures, 65 with Adam Driver. The premise gives me a bit of a Planet of the Apes vibe, but having never seen it, I'm probably wrong.
Next, from Paramount, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, available as a standard edition and as a SteelBook edition. This film is not your father's D&D film, but each have their own merits.
Closing out new releases, a genre that doesn't frequent the 4K charts, Violet Evergarden: The Movie, which is available as a standard edition and a limited edition.
Pair of horror/thriller release from Scream Factory with The Haunting and Wes Craven's The People Under The Stairs.
From Arrow Video, The Last Starfighter debuts to 4K disc. Memories of playing the video game on the Atari computer come out for this one.
Classic Film-Noir The Night of the Hunter comes to us via Kino Lorber.
'Paramount Presents' release The Nutty Professor (1963) also dons a 4K disc this week. Oh that Jerry Lewis!
Severin Films also plays the 4K game this week with Drowning by Numbers.
Thelma & Louise gets the Criterion Collection treatment this week.
If you purchase direct from their site, Vinegar Syndrome's releases of A Blade in the Dark and Showgirls come out this week. If you prefer to wait for a different merchant, it's probably going to be two months.
In the double-dip category, Sony Pictures follows their standard playbook and upgrades Cliffhanger from HDR10 to Dolby Vision, with a SteelBook instead of a regular case. And Paramount releases another mega-set, Transformers Limited Edition 6-Movie Collection [SteelBook], no doubt to tie in with the latest upcoming Tranformers Beast Wars film.
Just for reference, next week has a bunch of double-dipping, but we do get another Criterion Collection release and the anticipated Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Collectors of Kino Lorber's Film-Noir box sets should be looking for Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema XIV this week.
One word: AVATAR - all other news is very small by comparision. Avatar is finally getting a 4K release and Avatar: The Way of Water is getting 4K, blu-ray and 3D blu-ray releases on June 20th. Don't forget all the retailer exclusives as well. Check out the news story here!
Universal will be releasing Les Misérables (2012) and Battlestar Galactica: The Movie to 4K disc July 11. Jaws 2 will be available on July 4th, if you want the SteelBook/giftset this time though, you have to import it.
Rio Bravo and East of Eden will both be available on 4K disc from Warner Bros on July 18.
Arrow Video's August titles include Unman, Wittering and Zigo, New Fist of Fury, The Last House on the Left 4K and Weird Science 4K. The UK will also see Time Bandits on 4K, but the Criterion release is coming June 13th. The UK release has a little bit of swag if that is more appealing to you.

Warner Brothers/Discovery has just launched Max (formerly HBO Max), an upgraded streaming service with loads of more 4K content including over 1000 films and episodes in 4K HDR (with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos available for certain devices) on May 23rd.
The service provides something for everyone - from HBO, Max Originals, WB movies (such as all eight Harry Potter films, Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy), DC Universe, documentaries, family-friendly content and more.
Max has introduced a new Ultimate Ad-Free tier for $19.99 per month ($199.99 a year) allowing four concurrent streams, 100 offline downloads, and as previously mentioned, close to 8x more films and episodes in 4K HDR, as well as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for certain content.
The 4K library is quite extensive, including yet-to-be-released films on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray such as classics like East of Eden and Rio Bravo, plus Avatar: The Way of the Water will also be available for streaming on June 7. All Warner Brothers films releasing this year will be available in 4K HDR after their theatrical release windows.
Here is the 4K listing of what is available (subject to change):
“We understand the value of offering our users a cinematic playback experience and to that end, we’ve implemented more advanced technology workflows that allow us to release more 4K content in a faster, more efficient way,” said Sudheer Sirivara, Global Technology Platform, Warner Bros. Discovery. “Max will offer more than 1,000 films and episodes in 4K at launch, and we’ll be adding more every month as we move forward.”
If you have previously subscribed to HBO Max, no worries. The Max app will either update itself or prompt subscribers to do so and previous plans, profiles, avatars, settings, "Continue Watching", and "My List" will be ported over unchanged. Subscribers to HBO Max will also be able to keep their current plans for six months.
However, it does appear that Max is currently not available in some regions, as I am in Canada and the link at the top of this article notified me that that is indeed the case. Hopefully that gets worked out soon.

James Cameron's sci-fi fantasy adventures Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water are finally coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs on June 20th. After following the advanced Streeming-only release structure similar to last year's mega-hit Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water will finally come to disc with new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, AND Blu-ray 3D - with retailer exclusives to boot! There's a lot to dig into for each of these releases, but at the start - it's nice to see some effort from Disney in this regard.

Now that is A LOT of Avatar to digest! So on top of the remastered original Avatar getting its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut, the sequel charges onto disc with multiple editions and retailer exclusives. Of the retailer exclusives, I'd be into that Best Buy SteelBook if it was actually accurate to the movie with Jake sporting his machine gun and NOT a stupid spear, so I'm giving Walmart the edge on the exclusives. Target once again shows their cards for not really caring about Physical Media with what is basically the standard 4K package... with a decal you can stick on your phone, tablet, or water bottle apparently! Whoohooo! (sarcasm)
Now for the best and most important details - the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray will finally see Disney/20th Century Studios release a BD-100 disc. Our press assets didn't list HDR grade, but I'm assuming they'd simply opt for HDR10 only. Atmos will be included along with an extra Blu-ray disc set for Bonus Features. The standard Blu-ray will only offer DTS-HD MA 5.1 but wildly enough the Blu-ray 3D disc will include DTS-HD 7.1 audio - it's not Atmos, but hey, it's better than the standard Blu-ray! Sadly there doesn't appear to be a 4K UHD + 3D Blu-ray combo pack available, at least here in the states. Other territories like Japan might offer that, they've been the one carrying the Disney 3D torch the last few years with their combo releases, so we'll keep our eyes out for that.
These aren't yet up for pre-order yet - but we expect them to start popping soon and when they wdo we'll update our listings so you can secure those orders ASAP.

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 51 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of May 21st - May 27th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
The week begins with Import Monday and Arrow Video's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Limited Edition). If I were to take one for the team and order it, it would most certainly be a guarantee that Criterion Collection would announce the domestic 4K of this within 5 minutes of my shipping notice. I just have that kind of effect on the home video market.
Domestic Tuesday New Releases are dominated by Warner Bros and they start with Creed III, which is available as a standard edition and as a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook.
The sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods has three options to ponder, the standard edition, a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook with a pretty bad-ass cover art, and a Walmart Exclusive that has some pretty tight imagery as well. Still missing from the 4K exclusives field as you have probably noticed is Target, they apparently have decided to take a step backwards and support the previous format.
Catalog titles: From Scream Factory, Brotherhood Of The Wolf.
Double-dips of sort, Crank gets a new SteelBook @ Best Buy and The Running Man gets a standard case release.
Next week looks like it's going to sting just a little bit, there are 16 skus domestically including the latest D&D movie, Adam Driver in '65,' some anime, and a few catalog titles get a 4K upgrade.
As we do every week, let's get the fresh blu-ray counterparts for any of the above titles listed first. Creed III gets a single release as well as a 3-film collection, almost an echo, Shazam! Fury of the Gods gets a single release, a Target Exclusive blu-ray edition that I would have considered if it was a 4K, and a 2-film collection is also an option.
The rest of the category is a bit slow though. I guess it's to save a bit of dough in preparation for next week.

TV on disc this week has one title, Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The Complete Series.
Honorable mention: Fans of the original film should recognize it, V/H/S/99 comes out this week via RLJ/Shudder Originals.
Although there were a handful of announcements, they have been onesie twosie sort of announcements, and may not have a wide appeal, so we will keep this section brief this week.

The end of Tom Cruise's long-running franchise is inching closer with the latest trailer for Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One
While the trailer doesn't offer a whole lot of plot details, it gives fans highlights of some of the exciting stunts and action sequences we'll see on the big screen. Normally I'd be worried about this kind of trailer showing too much of the film, but if Rogue Nation and Fallout proved, there's a lot more excitement than the few seconds we get in these trailers.
In Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan's past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission - not even the lives of those he cares about most.

August's Criterion Collection titles include Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (4K Ultra HD Blu-ray), as well as Blu-ray editions of Wayne Wang's Dim Sum: A Little Bit of Heart, Bo Widerberg's New Swedish Cinema - a boxed set of four poetic and political films, and finally Cauleen Smith's Drylongso.
Starting off the month on August 8 is a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray of Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams.
Unfolding in a series of eight mythic vignettes, this late work by Akira Kurosawa was inspired by the beloved director’s own nighttime visions, along with stories from Japanese folklore. In a visually sumptuous journey through the master’s imagination, tales of childlike wonder give way to apocalyptic apparitions: a young boy stumbles on a fox wedding in a forest; a soldier confronts the ghosts of the war dead; a power-plant meltdown smothers a seaside landscape in radioactive fumes. Interspersed with reflections on the redemptive power of creation, including a richly textured tribute to Vincent van Gogh (who is played by Martin Scorsese), Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams is both a showcase for its maker’s artistry at its most unbridled and a deeply personal lament for a world at the mercy of human ignorance.

Offering another fresh perspective on San Francisco’s Chinese American community, Wang takes a bittersweet look at the generational pas de deux between an aging immigrant widow and her devoted daughter, torn between filial duty and her own desires. Soulfully performed by an ensemble including real-life mother and daughter Kim and Laureen Chew and Victor Wong, the Yasujiro Ozu–inspired Dim Sum: A Little Bit of Heart is as lovingly made as the home-cooked cuisine it celebrates.

A period piece that forgoes nostalgia in favor of a stark examination of working-class struggle, Bo Widerberg’s second feature unfolds in 1936 in the director’s hometown of Malmö. It’s there, in the poor district of Raven’s End, that young Anders (Widerberg’s regular collaborator Tommy Berggren) chases his dream of becoming a writer while growing increasingly disillusioned with the dead-end world that surrounds him: an alcoholic father, a toiling mother, and the ominous specter of Nazism. Delivering a bracing jolt of kitchen-sink realism to Swedish cinema, Widerberg paints an unsparing portrait of youthful idealism bumping up against economic despair.

Bo Widerberg reached new heights of visual lyricism with this sublime retelling of a real-life nineteenth-century romantic tragedy. Bound by their all-consuming desire, a young circus tightrope walker (Pia Degermark, winner of the Cannes Best Actress prize) and a lieutenant (Tommy Berggren) with a wife and children forsake everything to be together and escape to the countryside—only to see their lovers’ idyll gradually give way to poverty and desperation. With its painterly, sun-dappled images and indelible use of Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 21, this 1960s art-house sensation is the most ravishing expression of Widerberg’s recurring theme of the tension between individual freedom and social responsibility.

One of Bo Widerberg’s most explicitly political works imbues the true story of a 1931 labor strike with a powerful contemporary resonance. In the industrial district of Ådalen, in the north of Sweden, a peaceful demonstration takes a tragic turn, leading to a historic general strike. Amid these events, the teenage Kjell (Peter Schildt) experiences sacrifice and strife, love and loss, and the consequences of this shocking violence. Working once again with Elvira Madigan cinematographer Jörgen Persson—who captures shimmering, light-filled images in graceful widescreen—Widerberg entwines a stirring portrait of resistance with an intimate coming-of-age journey for a vision of history that feels vibrantly, urgently alive. |
And finally on August 29 is the Blu-ray debut of Cauleen Smith's Drylongso.
A rediscovered treasure of 1990s DIY filmmaking, Cauleen Smith’s Drylongso embeds an incisive look at racial injustice within a lovingly handmade buddy movie/murder mystery/romance. Alarmed by the rate at which the young Black men around her are dying, brash Oakland art student Pica (Toby Smith) attempts to preserve their existence in Polaroid snapshots, along the way forging a friendship with a woman in an abusive relationship (April Barnett) and experiencing love, heartbreak, and the everyday threat of violence. Capturing the vibrant community spirit of Oakland in the nineties, Smith crafts both a rare cinematic celebration of Black female creativity and a moving elegy for a generation of lost African American men.
