What? Did you think that once April was over your movie budget would get some time off to recover?
From a fresh new take on The World's Greatest Detective to a cursed man with a hook for a hand to two adventures with the Man With No Name - May is another stacked month for 4K Ultra HD collectors. Not that I'm complaining that all of these great hits are coming to the format, I'm just asking do they all have to come out all at once? Everyone from Warner Bros to Sony to Kino Orber Studio Classics is throwing some heavy hitters out there into the world this month. Thankfully we get a little breathing room at the start of the month, but things quickly pick up and it becomes reals. Do people still say reals? Or am I just old?
Anyway... let's dig in
Thankfully the first week of the month starts off mostly on the quiet side with Pixar bringing their latest of their best films to 4K (after an unfortunately Disney+ only premier). After that, Sony starts to fix a serious wrong about a lack of Joe Carnahan films on 4K.
If those editions aren't your liking - there's a Target Exclusive and a Walmart Exclusive
So this is where the slate picks up a lot of steam. We're getting another semi-watchable-but-still-missed-the-boat video game movie with solo releases of a particular dinosaur franchise capped off with a box set AND single title editions from the master of suspense. A little old, a little new, there's a lot to dig through
Also available will be solo releases of:
In the pile of no new but finally getting solo releases - all of the previously released Jurassic Park trilogy films and the first Jurassic World film are getting solo releases outside of the old 25th Anniversary Collection set. We haven't heard anything to suggest there will be anything new regarding video transfers, audio tracks, or bonus features. We imagine something like that would happen when Jurassic World: Dominion is on its way out of theaters. There's also a new Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom edition coming, but again that's likely just a repackage to thematically fit the new cover design for the other films.
This third week of may feels big on fan favorites, cult classics, and one of the greatest westerns ever filmed. Between Paramount and Scream Factory, a lot of my extra spending $$$ burns up this week.
It'd be one thing if we only had to work with one of the greatest recent comic book movies made in the last decade to deal with, but there are some heavy, heavy hitters running this month with big knockout blows from Scream Factory, Showtime, Arrow, and Magnet all bringing some slick flicks to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. If that wasn't enough you have some more solo Jack Ryan 4Ks breaking out from Paramount's big box set from a couple of years ago.
This final week of May is pretty much the best of the best of the best all hitting 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. You get one of the best gangster movies ever made. You get two of the best westerns ever made. One of the absolute best thrillers ever made. One of the best historical musicals ever made. And you're also getting both entries in one of the best recent horror/comedy franchises all on 4K. May was already an exhausting month but this final frame is going to burn holes in the wallet.
And that is everything we've got coming our way domestically for May 2022. This is going to be an exhausting month for sure and we're going to crank through these for reviews as fast as we can. We're also going to try and cover some of the foreign import releases as they come in as well - both Turbine's Candyman Mediabook and Arrow's release of Candyman are on our hit lists. Turbine also now has a new 4K of Pitch Black we hope to cover ASAP. It's always dodgy with the imports because we have to wait for things to ship and clear customs and that can take much longer than desired - but that'll just mean we can focus on this HUGE list of upcoming titles.
To that point - thank you for all of your Pre-orders. They really do go a long way towards keeping our little game going. Thanks again and until next month - happy collecting!
There is a positive vibe happening right now for physical media. Brick & Mortar stores seem to continue their downsizing of their video departments and I doubt any amount of complaining to their corporate offices will do anything. However, the current pre-order page on Amazon.com for 4K and blu-ray actually encompasses about 20 pages of titles. That number has been as low as 12 over the Winter months so it's a sign the studios still support our little obsession.
Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 50 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
There are just two actual titles available this week on 4K disc. New release first...
Disney Pixar's Turning Red, a story of a 13-year old that turns into a giant red panda when she gets excited. This title is available as a standard edition release, a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook, a Walmart Exclusive 'Enamal Pin' edition and a Target Exclusive Art Edition.
The second 4K entry this week is a catalog title, Smokin' Aces, and this one is available as a standard edition and as a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. No word on the sequel getting a new release but if this one sells well, it's highly possible.
Semi-slow week for the blu-ray category this week. Getting the blu-ray counterpart out of the way first, bring us a standard edition of Turning Red. If you want an exclusive for this format, you need to visit Disney Movie Club.
From Universal, 2022 Liam Neeson action/thriller Blacklight. And, added at the very last second, a crime/drama title, The Outfit.
From Warner Bros, DC Animated title Constantine: The House of Mystery.
If you did not buy the Paramount release of Audrey Hepburn Collection a few month's back because you didn't want to double-dip on most of the titles, you can now get Paris When It Sizzles as a standalone. For a new release title, action/thriller Tom Clancy's Without Remorse gets a blu-ray release this week.
As we wait for Jurassic World: Dominion to hit theaters, what better time to grab Dinosaur World from Shout! Factory.
Anime Highlights include just two titles this week, 2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team - The Complete Season and OBSOLETE - Complete Collection.
From Kino Lorber, Francis the Talking Mule (7 Film Collection) awaits your video rack!
Honorable Mention: If you enjoy Hallmark movies, now is your chance to get one on blu-ray. Maybe they're testing the waters again to see how sales go, The Wedding Veil should be available Tuesday.
The April batch of Imprint Films releases should be available on Friday, here's the listing:
>The Wicker Man - Imprint Films Limited Editi
Warner Archive collection has three Judy Garland musicals coming in June. Titles include The Clock, For Me and My Gal and Ziegfeld Girl. Other names you may have heard of are Gene Kelly, James Stewart and Lana Turner.
Lionsgate has revealed to retailers that Everything Everywhere All at Once will be coming to 4K, blu-ray on June 14th. Additionally, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent will be getting a 4K, blu-ray and Target exclusive blu-ray sometime around the same time as well.
Arrow Video's July slate has been revealed. Titles include Giallo Essentials V3 Black Edition, Hell High, Hell High (Raging Fury Slip), The Sacred Spirit and Tenebrae 4K. Tenebrae 4K is a UK only title, but for the U.S, Synapse Films is offering very similar releases, a standard retail box and a retailer exclusive box that is available at Diabolikdvd.
GKIDS has revealed they will be releasing a 4K collector's edition for the 2021 animated film Belle. Although we are not affected by it in the U.S., hope they do no region lock this release too, it's just blasphemous for a 4K release.
Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?
Hope you have 20 Menthol Kools ready for that shine job - Riddick's first adventure gets a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Ultimate Edition from Turbine Media Group
German boutique label Turbine Media Group gives Vin Diesel's star-making outing Pitch Black a new 3-Disc Ultimate Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release. Not only will you get the film presented in 4K with Dolby Vision HDR (and HDR10), Turbine is sweetening the deal with a brand new exclusive Atmos audio mix! If their work on Twister or The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is any indication, that Atmos track should be a beast.
Not to stop with a new audio mix, the set comes with two extra Blu-ray discs loaded with archival bonus features from previous releases (including the animated Dark Fury) but the set will also come with new exclusive cast and crew interviews. If that's not enough you also get a bunch of slick swag including reprint lobby cards, ID, patch, and posters. To cap it off there's also a 180-page booklet included - in German. Now normally I'd be a little bummed about the booklet appearing only in German, but I've had some pretty good luck lately with the Google Text Translate app on my phone - not an ideal solution but it actually works pretty well!
And here's a full breakdown of the bonus features coming out way.
Both sets are up for pre-order right now. Just follow the links at the top of each listing page to go right over to Turbine's shop. If you can't read German, don't worry, your browser's translate function should take care of everything! We hope to cover this release as soon as it comes in.
Aaand for the final week of April, prepare yourself for wallet fatigue because it is quite a busy week! The Summer Blockbuster season is just a few weeks away. What are you looking forward to this year?
Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 49 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
Starting with the new release of the week, LionsGate offers Moonfall as a standard edition and as a Best Buy Exclusive (slipcover style) SteelBook. Most of these steels have had decent cover art, I don't know exactly what to make of this one though, I am leaning towards NO.
On to catalog titles, from Arrow Video, Terry Gilliam sci-fi/thriller 12 Monkeys. [Edit] - Word from Arrow Video is that if it is a 'Special Edition' that it might not have a slip cover. I can say that mine came in today and it does have a slip cover.
From Warner Bros. look for Singin' in the Rain. Looks like they left us in the cold again on the deluxe edition, you gotta import that one from the UK.
The next Criterion Collection is For All Mankind, a thrilling documentary that chronicles the Apollo program.
Vinegar Syndrome has got a lot of titles to offer this week. First, individual releases for Scanner Cop and Scanner Cop 2. Those titles were previously released as a double feature on their own site.
These next titles were all available previously available directly from Vinegar Syndrome on March 29th. You may still purchase them if you follow the links, the wider release via our Amazon links likely have different cover art and no slipcovers. The titles are (alphabetically) Dracula Sucks, Madman, Schizoid / X-Ray (Double Feature) and Stiff Competition.
Getting the counterpart of what's listed in the 4K section listed here first, LionsGate offers Moonfall on blu-ray, with yet another cover art.
LionsGate also offers the 2021 romance film Expired this week.
Criterion Collection has two releases this week, first a foreign drama titled Eyimofe (This Is My Desire). The other title is a jazz music treat titled 'Round Midnight.
Paramount continues to churn out catalog titles to fill the voids in our collections, this week look for The Beautician and the Beast, also He Said, She Said, plus King David (1985), Orange County, Thief of Hearts and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!.
Anime highlights include Dragon Goes House-Hunting, a double dip of KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!: The Complete First Season + OVA, but as a SteelBook this go round, Lupin the 3rd: Episode 0 - First Contact, Mrs. Pepperpot - Complete Series, Show By Rock!! Stars!! - Season Four, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Season 2 and Wonder Egg Priority, available as a standard release and as a Limited Edition.
Kino Lorber has got more Charles Bronson action, this time look for Breakout. If you have been waiting for the next chapter on their Dark Side of Cinema releases, wait no more, Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema VI (Singapore / Johnny Stool Pigeon / The Raging Tide) streets Tuesday.
Arrow Video release the box set of Twisting the Knife: Four Films by Claude Chabrol.
Honorable Mention: The next batch of indicator series to be released are this week and include One For the Road and Stanley Long's Adventures: A Seventies Sex Comedy Threesome.
Criterion Collection has announced their July titles, they are Raging Bull (4K/Blu-ray), Okja (4K/Blu-ray), Devil In A Blue Dress (4K/Blu-ray), Summertime, The Virgin Suicides (4K) and Drive My Car. Read the news story here. All I can say is OUCH, going to be an expensive month for me!
Going forward, FUNimation titles are to be branded as CrunchyRoll as they have merged distribution and shops. Their July titles have been revealed and include Moriarty the Patriot - Part 1, Hortensia SAGA - The Complete Season, Scar on the Praeter - The Complete Season, Kingdom - Season 3 Part 1, The Quintessential Quintuplets - Season 2, The Duke of Death and His Maid - Season 1, The World Ends with You - The Animation, One Piece: Season Eleven - Voyage Nine, Taisho Otome Fairy Tale - The Complete Season and Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club - Season 1. If they read this, I hope they make Seasons 1 & 2 available for Kingdom on blu-ray. As it is now, they're DVD only in the U.S.
Warner Bros. will be releasing Giant (1956) of 4K disc on June 21st.
Not sure how our readers are doing, but yours truly has been on this list as far as preordering Kino Lorber titles from Amazon. Just got the dreaded "Delivery estimate" email for In the Heat of the Night 4K as May 17th. That's basically a month late. I've had similar issues with other Kino titles as well with delays of 2 to 4 weeks. This of course is driving up prices as well when 3rd party sellers snatch the opportunity. Wonder if they are setting delivery dates too aggressively?
Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?
Save some shelf space, The Criterion Collection is bringing a terrific mix of fan favorites, classics, and one of the best films ever made!
Is it just me or is it ever since The Criterion Collection finally got on the books with 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray their slate of new releases seems more aggressive and exciting? The July 2022 slate is pretty damn aggressive bringing some great titles to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray covering the full spectrum from one of the best films ever made to human dramas to a modern fairytale to a slick modern noir thriller. On that note, let's get onto the nitty-gritty of this new slate of titles:
These aren't up for pre-order yet - but as soon as they are, we'll update our listings ASAP. It really helps this aggressive slate of titles is dropping in time for the standard July Criterion sale at Barns & Nobel - that'll really help save a few bucks! Which ones are you picking up?
This July Not Every God Has Plan!
If you need a break from doing your taxes or trying to find a way to suitably spend that return check (hopefully no one owes anything this year), take a break and enjoy the first teaser trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder! The film picks up where Avengers: End Game left off with everyone's favorite Asgardian Thor (Chris Hemsworth) running off into space with Starlord (Chris Pratt) and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy. In this brief teaser trailer, we get to see Thor get back into Super Hero Shape as he moves onto an existential quest to figure out what to do with himself. Oh yeah, and we get a nice tease of Natalie Portman at the end that I won't spoil here. The film also stars Christian Bale as the villain Gorr the God Butcher with Taika Waititi returning to co-write and direct. Barring any sort of pandemic related release hiccup - Thor: Love and Thunder will arrive in theaters July 8th, 2022.
With the Easter weekend, this week is what you can call a slow week for new releases. What started out as a religious holiday has evolved into a commercial to sell stuff, candy, stuffed animals, egg hunts, gift baskets and other 'fun' events. I always look forward to a traditional 'boiled dinner' myself and Reese' peanut butter eggs. Admit it, Christmas has turned into decorating the house, a tree and gift giving.
Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 48 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
If you don't mind importing, Arrow Video releases Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer on Monday. No word at this time if this well ever get a U.S. release.
There are zero new releases this week. But there's a few catalog releases to ponder.
From LionsGate, the 2011 film The Cabin in the Woods gets a spiffy slipcover edition SteelBook at Best Buy. A side note is that these editions also include a digital code that unlocks the 4K stream. Maybe when we entered our codes years ago LionsGate wasn't offering the 4K stream, and unlike some of the others, they did not automatically upgrade you.
From Sony Pictures, a SteelBook release that includes Heavy Metal / Heavy Metal 2000. Keep in mind that Heavy Metal 2000 is an HD blu-ray, not a 4K, but that's OK. Most of us will be buying this for the original movie any way!
And last but not least, Kino Lorber gives us In the Heat of the Night in 4K. This thriller stars the late Sidney Poitier and set new boundaries when it was filmed. Be aware that this film is in 4K but the color grading is SDR, but this is still no doubt the best this film has ever looked!
Blu-ray releases-
There are no blu-ray counterparts of the abovementioned titles. So let's get right down to what is worth checking out.
From Universal Pictures, 2021 drama/musical/romance Cyrano. And in what I think is a first, Gravitas Ventures has partnered with Universal to release The King's Daughter, which is listed as an adventure/family film.
From Criterion Collection, two titles this week. First a comedy/musical titled The Girl Can't Help It. And second, a drama from Italy titled Miracle in Milan.
It probably feels like 'forever' since the last Jackass movie, but hey, Paramount has you covered with Jackass Forever.
Arrow Video brings us Rogue Cops and Racketeers: Two Crime Thrillers from Enzo G. Castellari.
A thriller from Vertical Entertainment titled The Desperate Hour starring Naomi Watts arrives this week.
Obligatory appearance from LionsGate this week delivers The Exorcism of God, a recent horror/thriller and The Humans, a drama from 2021.
Anime highlights include Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki - The Complete Season, Gekidol - The Complete Season, The God of High School - Season 1, LBX Girls - The Complete Season, Needless: Complete Collection, Only Yesterday [SteelBook], The Tale of The Princess Kaguya [SteelBook] and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Season Two Part 01.
From Scream Factory comes the 1962 adventure/horror Night Creatures starring Peter Cushing. If you love the new cover art, you will have to settle for the standard release (with slipcover) as the direct copy from Scream! Factory's shop that comes with a poster is sold out!
Honorable Mention: Kino Lorber has a couple of W.C. Fields titles this week. They are Man on the Flying Trapeze, You Can't Cheat an Honest Man and You're Telling Me!.
As mentioned last week, The Batman is coming in May, May 24th to be exact. Looks like the Walmart Exclusive is the one that I am most excited for so far.
Turning Red is also coming on May 3rd, it too has the usual assortment of retailer exclusives as well. Don't even ask, just like all other Disney releases, Dolby Vision is NOT on the disc, and it is doubtful they will use a BD100 disc (if needed). Hope Disney is reading this, your 4K customer base would really like to give your releases an A+ but these two business decisions are what holds you back.
Paramount is adding more catalog titles for June/July. In addition to First Wives Club as a Paramount Presents release, titles thus far include Rough Cut, Boomerang, The Hunted and Harlem Nights. No doubt more will be added as the days go by. One more piece of Paramount news, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is getting a new 4K SteelBook. These new steels thus far are, in my opinion, what they should have released in the first place. I'm not a fan of the cover art of the Best Buy exclusive set but still begrudgingly bought it.
88 Films will be releasing Dragons Forever on blu-ray and 4K disc. The action film stars Jackie Chan. Also on regular blu-ray, Flying Guillotine 2 and Martial Club.
Kino Lorber will be releasing a new 4K disc for The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974). If you have never seen original version, it is a well made movie.
In case you missed the news, a lot of titles previously released by Twilight Time have been getting releases by a company named Sandpiper Films. On the docket so far and in the near future are Eye of the Needle, Salvador, Tom Sawyer (1973), Under Fire, Nicholas Nickleby, Posse, American Pimp, Hawaii, The Cutting Edge: Chasing the Dream, Bound For Glory, Baby Boom, Salsa, The Man in the Moon and It's My Party.
Universal has a couple of TV shows coming to disc, Hacks: Season One, La Brea: Season One and The Sinner: The Complete Series. The TV series Ray Donovan gets a movie on 4K disc and blu-ray on May 24th.
Mill Creek is releasing SeaQuest DSV The Complete Series on July 19th(ish). Previously you had to import this show, the one from Koch Media in Germany is a nice looking set but is likely region locked.
Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?
The biggest film of 2022 (so far) and one of the best comic book movies ever made, The Batman comes home to Digital April 18th and 4K UHD and Blu-ray Disc May 24th, 2022
Just this morning we posted on social about how The Batman was now available for pre-order from Best Buy due to hit store shelves May 24th. Now Warner Bros. makes it official. Premier digital retailers like iTunes and Vudu should see The Batman arrive for purchase on April 18th - the same day it arrives on HBO Max. As usual, Disc Collectors will have to sit tight a few more weeks until May 24th to get their hands on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray copies. The cool thing is you'll have some options with some exciting store exclusives for picking this one up! Personally, after three visits to IMAX, I'm just glad to see this coming home sooner rather than later!
Now here's where things get interesting. Walmart is showing a listing for a pretty snazzy deluxe Gift Set option with three discs. All artwork we've seen for other editions and the official press release indicate a 2-Disc release and nothing in Walmart's listing tells us what is on that third disc yet. We've made inquiries so hopefully, we'll find out soon what is on that third disc that's clearly labeled "bonus features"
There is also a listing for a Target Exclusive Blu-ray - but it looks like the standard artwork and there's nothing to indicate what the exclusive is. When we find out we'll create a listing and add that to this roster of releases.
Right now we don't quite have full specs for the 4K Ultra HD - we know that it will have Atmos Audio (as will the Blu-ray) but we have not heard back yet about HDR grade so count on base HDR10 for now. As soon as we know more we'll update our listings and this article. Until then, you can check out Warner Bros. full press release below.

SYNOPSIS
More than a year of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear
into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With
only a few trusted allies—Alfred (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright)—amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic
clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he
encounters such characters as Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz), Oz, aka The Penguin (Colin Farrell),
Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka The Riddler (Paul Dano). As the
evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear,
Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power
and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

The Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray will be available in stores on May 3. Check out our theatrical review here..
In Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red, confident, dorky 13-year-old Mei must balance being a dutiful daughter with the chaos of adolescence. Her slightly overbearing mom is never far from her daughter. And, as if changes to Mei’s interests, relationships and body aren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited, she “poofs” into a giant red panda!

Film Synopsis
In Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red, confident, dorky 13-year-old Mei must balance being a dutiful daughter with the chaos of adolescence. Her slightly overbearing mom is never far from her daughter. And, as if changes to Mei’s interests, relationships and body aren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited, she “poofs” into a giant red panda!
