New to VUDU: Week of September 11th, 2011

It’s a big week for comic book movies on VUDU. The streaming service adds two of this summer’s biggest superhero hits to the rental stream, along with at least one interesting (non-comic book) indie picture.

The following titles enter the VUDU stream this week:

  • ‘Barney: Big World Adventure Movie’ (9/13)
  • ‘Blades of Blood’ (9/13)
  • ‘Hesher’ (9/13)
  • ‘Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown’ (9/13)
  • ‘Thor’ (9/13)
  • ‘X-Men: First Class’ (9/16)

That’s a pretty small selection of titles being newly added. Obviously, the two that stand out are ‘Thor‘ and ‘X-Men: First Class‘. If you didn’t see either of these in theaters, and don’t want to spend the money on Blu-ray purchases, VUDU’s “HDX” option is the best way to rent them at near-Blu-ray quality.

Also notable is ‘Hesher‘, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a greasy loner who somehow gets tangled up in a depressed young boy’s life. Natalie Portman and Rainn Wilson also appear. Here’s the trailer:

Josh’s Random VUDU Pick:

Last week, I promised to get off the Coen brothers theme with my random VUDU catalog recommendations. So, this week I’m scanning through the archive and highlighting ‘Cube‘, Vincenzo Natali’s bizarro cult sci-fi thriller about a group of strangers trapped in a deadly maze. It’s not available on Blu-ray (in the U.S., at least), but you can stream it in 1080p HDX quality from VUDU. Give it a rental.

All dates provided refer specifically to rental availability. Check VUDU for sell-through availability, if interested. Be sure to also check for VUDU’s $0.99 Movie of the Day offers, which are announced each day on the company’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
