There’s not a lot of movement in the Netflix stream this week. While we gain practically nothing, we also only lose two movies worth talking about. Wouldn’t it be nice if this happened more often? It’d sure give us less reason to babysit our queues!
Leaving the Stream
- ‘Slacker’ (1/21): I watched ‘Slacker‘ and I just didn’t care for it. The movie has been called out by many as a classic and a must watch, so I’ll let one of them say something instead. “Watching ‘Slacker’ is like drifting in and out of all the best conversations at a party,” says my dear friend Molly Laich, who generally knows a thing or two about movies. She’s wrong on ‘Jumanji’, though. ‘Jumanji ‘is great.
- ‘Dead Calm’ (1/24): The plot is neat: A couple find themselves on a boat with a psychopath. But ‘Dead Calm‘ is one of those movies that I’d watch just for the cast. I find Nicole Kidman to be a fine actress and Sam Neill is, of course, excellent. Billy Zane doesn’t always pick the best movies, but he did a boat movie in 1997 that turned out pretty well, so I’d be happy to see him on one again.
Entering the Stream
- ‘Sliders’: I have no idea if ‘Sliders‘ holds up or not, but I’m so very willing to give it a try. If you never saw the show, imagine a sort of ‘Doctor Who’ meets ‘Quantum Leap’, but with Jerry O’Connell and John Rhys-Davies. Bits of Season 1 are unavailable, but Seasons 2 through 5 are complete. Also, maybe it’s just me, but my memory is hazy about TV shows and movies from when I was young. I remember a lot of the cast wrong. So for some reason, up until a year or two ago, I thought that Michael Ian Black starred in this show. I can’t say it would have been better if he had, but it sure would have been funnier!
