Have I complained enough about the current season of ‘Fringe’? OK, fine. As much as I dislike the year’s storyline, even I have to admit when the show gives us a good episode, as was the case this past Friday.

You know what I think about when watching this final season of ‘Fringe’? I think about how amazing it is that the characters’ iPhones continue to work even in the distant dystopian future, and how convenient it is that none of the omniscient Observer overlords can track the characters by their cell phone usage. I think about how the current storyline radically contradicts the show’s previous four years of mythology about the Observers. I think about how frustrating it is that, even though everything that’s happening in this season might be considered an alternate universe that our characters could theoretically escape from, the series has slammed shut the door on any more talk of alternate universes and won’t even acknowledge that as a possibility. Yeah, in other words, I’m still not digging it.

Even if I don’t particularly care for the direction that this final season of ‘Fringe’ is taking, I’m certainly not going to drop the series now, five years in and so close to its conclusion. This puts me I a position where I’m forced to accept and evaluate each episode for what it is, regardless of its placement and relevance to the mess that the show’s greater mythology has become. To that end, Friday’s episode was… OK, I guess.

‘Fringe’ returned for its fifth (and final) season this past Friday. I suppose that I ought to be more excited about this than I am. Unfortunately, considering how poorly Season 4 ended, and considering the path that this season has already decided to take, I think that I’m ready for the show to just be over with already so that I can move on with my life.

‘House’ retired earlier this year. I guess that means that Fox needs a new medical drama to fill the Monday night time slot. Oh hey, look at this; here comes ‘The Mob Doctor’. You know how much people like doctor shows, right? And you know how much people also like crime shows? What if – and let me know if you can follow me here – what if you could make a series that was both a doctor show and a crime show? That’d be, like, totally mind-blowing! Wouldn’t it?

Now on Thursdays, ‘Glee’ returned for a fourth season last week, and I’m sure that a lot of people out there are asking why it bothered. After last year’s lackluster, sometimes downright terrible season, not to mention that flop 3D concert film, the show felt more than ever like a flash-in-the-pan that had already burned out. Yet, with half the characters finally graduated from high school, Season 4 actually promises a shake-up that could restore some freshness to the series. Does the premiere episode deliver?

To be fair, this one had the least involvement from Lynch, was little seen at the time, and has been almost entirely forgotten since. One consequence of my traveling last week is that I’m way behind on my TV watching. In fact, my DVR overran while I was away and deleted some of my oldest recordings. (Guess I’ll never find out what happened in the last half-season of ‘Revenge’ now. Oh well…) Now that I’m back, it’s time to do some catching up. ‘Fringe’ aired the first half of its two-part season finale on Friday. Admittedly, it’s probably not fair for me to judge the episode until I can see how all of its plot points play out in the second part. However, at this moment, it sure feels like a gigantic, unwieldy mess, and perhaps one of the most frustrating episodes that the show has ever aired. Considering that this is ‘Fringe’ we’re talking about, that’s saying a lot.
