‘True Blood’ 3.07 Recap: “I’m So Happy I Could Bleed”

‘True Blood’ 3.07 Recap: “I’m So Happy I Could Bleed”

‘True Blood’ has really been on a tear this season. The show has considerably amped up its action, gothic melodrama, and gruesome bloody gore. Last week’s episode was a particular standout that cranked out a huge number of major plot developments. In a lot of ways, the same can be said for this week’s ep, ‘Hitting the Ground,’ which delivers several important revelations that dramatically affect the series mythology. It even features no less than three notable character deaths. And yet, somehow, I feel like the episode doesn’t quite live up to the teaser we saw at the end of the previous episode. Still, there’s a lot noteworthy going on here. (Spoilers to follow.)

HD Recap: “You Urinated on America’s Pastime”

I realize that ‘Hung’ isn’t a show for all tastes. (For example, Drew here at the blog doesn’t care much for it.) It’s rarely the type of comedy that leaves you howling with laughter. However, I really feel like the characters have grown on me and are settling in nicely. And once you’re down with the characters, an episode like this week’s (called ‘Sing It Again Ray, or Home Plate’) has some really funny stuff going on. (Some profanity after the break.)

HD Recap: “It’s Gonna Be a Long Day for Uncle Jesse”

Is it even possible? A new episode of ‘Entourage’ that has a pretty fair number of solid laughs? I can hardly believe it. I’ve gotten so used to the show just sort of being there, something I continue to watch out of obligation because it once used to be great, a long time ago. While I wouldn’t say that ‘Tequila Sunrise’ signals a new renaissance in hilarity for the series, the episode is certainly a bit livelier than most this season. A lot of that has to do with a guest appearance from John Stamos, gamely spoofing himself. Can we make him a regular? Please?

‘True Blood’ 3.06 Recap: “Killin’ Vampires and Savin’ Your Ass!”

‘True Blood’ 3.06 Recap: “Killin’ Vampires and Savin’ Your Ass!”

Whoo-whee! This week’s is a really big episode of ‘True Blood’, written by series creator Alan Ball himself. Despite its laconic title, ‘I Got a Right to Sing the Blues’ gets right to the action, crams in a ton of important plot developments, and moves like a shot the whole time. It also reaffirms this season’s commitment to being as over-the-top bloody and gruesome as possible. In other words, it’s pretty awesome. (Spoilers and more profanity after the break.)

HD Recap: Some Krazy Glue Will Fix That Good as New

HD Recap: Some Krazy Glue Will Fix That Good as New

Is ‘Entourage’ having another down season, or am I just burned out on the show? I’m honestly not sure that I can objectively tell. When I look at any individual episode, I can’t necessarily pick out much specific that I think is done badly. Most episodes still have a funny moment or two. And yet, there’s just no fire there anymore. The show feels like it’s treading water creatively, and has outlived its usefulness. This week’s episode, ‘Dramedy’, doesn’t do much to rectify that.

HD Recap: One Ho, Two Pimps

This week’s episode of ‘Hung’ finally allows the characters to acknowledge something that we the audience have been thinking all along – that Ray’s kids don’t look anything even remotely like him. No answer is given for this, but at least the question is officially out there on the characters’ minds. A lot of viewers complain that they don’t look like Jessica (Anne Heche) either, but I think they’re at least a reasonably plausible cross between her and Ronnie (Eddie Jemison). Why the show hasn’t just made that a plot point by now is still a mystery, unfortunately. Anyway, that all happens at the beginning of the episode. The rest of ‘Mind Bullets, or Bang Bang Bang Bang M.F.’ is primarily focused on Tanya and her rivalry with Lenore, which leads to one of the funniest moments in the series so far.

‘True Blood’ 3.05 Recap: “This Is Sexy Good News”

‘True Blood’ 3.05 Recap: “This Is Sexy Good News”

At its best, ‘True Blood’ provides a kicky mix of pulp melodrama, horror, and black comedy. Some episodes lean more towards one of those aspects than the others. This week’s episode, ‘Trouble’, brings on the funny in a big way. It has a fair amount of overt comedy, especially in the Jason Stackhouse storyline, and also a lot of just plain weird stuff going on. But don’t worry; it certainly doesn’t skimp on the brooding drama or bloody mayhem either.

HD Recap: “I Have Class. I’m Extremely F*ing Classy!”

I don’t think I realized this last season, before I started recapping, but the writers of ‘Hung’ appear to be big fans of the double-title. Looking over the episode list since the show’s beginning, most episodes have two titles. Does this mean they’re overflowing with great ideas, or just indecisive? You be the judge. This week’s two-fer is ‘Tuscon is the Gateway to D., or This is Not Sexy’. The “D” stands for… well, you can figure that out for yourself.

HD Recap: Hustle & Flowbee

‘Entourage’ has always been one of those shows about nothing. The point of watching is to hang around with the characters for a bit, not to follow some intricate plot. I get that. Even so, seven seasons in, I feel like I need more than a character getting a haircut to keep me engaged. Is that just me? Still, episode ‘Buzzed’ has a few solid laughs and is generally more interesting and entertaining than last week’s premiere.

‘True Blood’ 3.04 Recap: “It’s a Were- Thing. We Run Hot.”

‘True Blood’ 3.04 Recap: “It’s a Were- Thing. We Run Hot.”

To our female readers out there (And yes, I know that we have some – Hi, Junie!), if you aren’t already familiar with it, allow me to introduce you to the concept of “fan service.” The term derives from anime circles, and generally refers to an attempt by show producers to appeal to the base urges of their core audience (typically teenage boys) by featuring gratuitous sexualized images of important characters in various states of undress for no particular narrative reason. I bring this up because this week’s episode of ‘True Blood’, called ’9 Crimes’, opens with a big honkin’ sample of fan service aimed directly at the ladies watching.
