Titans will clash… on Blu-ray! Well, not really. There’s actually only one major day-and-date release this week, and it’s kind of a stinker. But there are a bunch of catalog titles coming out, and maybe we’ll find something interesting in there. Let’s take a look.
Let’s all take a moment of silence for the loss of one of the absolute coolest things that Xbox Live had going for it. ’1 vs. 100′ was a massive multiplayer game show that featured prizes, a live host, and some fun interactivity to boot. And now it’s gone. If you never played ’1 vs. 100,’ you may have seen the TV show of the same name. The basic idea was to create the absolute biggest game show ever, using a total of 101 contestants. As the name implies, the game pits one contestant against a group of 100.
Attention all ‘Lost’ fans. I’m sure that, by now, you’ve all heard that the upcoming Season 6 Blu-ray (and DVD for that matter) box sets will include a brand new extra scene that takes place sometime after the events of the series finale. Well, now ABC has released a publicity still from that footage. Spoiler Alert: There’s a desk lamp in it! OMG! Microsoft officially announced the price for Kinect, and it’s not going to take anyone by surprise. Yep, it’s $150. The bigger announcement is a huge upgrade for the Xbox 360 Arcade.
Yikes. It’s a dry week folks. But even this absolutely awful week has at least one standout title. If you’re really into Little League baseball, you can call it two.
What does it say about the week’s new Blu-ray release slate that the biggest movie on the list acknowledges right in the title that it’s about a bunch of losers? It doesn’t bode well, I’ll tell you that. Follow us after the break for a look at what’s new in stores today.
When I was a child of say 5 or 6 years-old, my mom found me throwing one of my G.I. Joe action figures into the ceiling fan. It wasn’t malicious or anything. I just wanted to see how far he’d fly. But as she explained, “That’s not how you play with toys.” I lost the privilege of playing with that particular toy for the rest of the day, and was only given it back when I showed that I knew the right way to play. We need to do the exact same thing with zombies and the videogame industry. They’re out of hand and it’s downright ridiculous. Some folks out there clearly don’t know how to play with their toys and need to have them taken away.
What are you doing with your weekend? A group of six Dutch gamers are using their time to go for a new world record in endurance gaming. The group, or at least one member of the group, is planning to eclipse the current 40-hour world record for constant playing. Sure, you might think to yourself, “These guys have way too much time on their hands,” but what world record are you breaking this weekend? One of the very cool things about the event is that you can watch it live. You should too, because it’s bound to be entertaining.
Remember ‘Minority Report‘? After that movie came out, tech developers seemed to lose track of everything that wasn’t a fancy hands-on interface. This started out simply enough, with an increase in the amount of touchscreen phones hitting the market. But the new range of motion control products takes it too far.
Yeah, I’ll come right out and say it – I don’t watch sports. Okay, I dabbled in basketball for a while, but that’s it. I’ve never cared for football, I find baseball excruciating and I just plain don’t get the appeal of watching hockey. Even the World Cup tournament didn’t get me excited. Watching other people play sports has never been for me. And yet I love sports games. Or at least I used to. Back in the days of ‘Tecmo Super Bowl,’ I loved them all. ‘Blades of Steel’ was my favorite, and I don’t think I’d ever watched hockey in my life when I got that game. Those games were easy to understand and just plain fun to play. I’ve still got a group of four that gets together on occasion for some ‘Tecmo Super Bowl’ action. We start up a season and play it right through. But that’s about where it ends for me, because modern sports games are far too complex.
