Weekend Movies: Muchas Comedias!

Weekend Movies: Muchas Comedias!

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a weekend with so many comedies either opening or expanding all at once. Perhaps since ‘Hunger Games’ is the only major title next week, the studios are using this weekend to counter-program an opposing genre.

Weekend Box Office: Hollywood Stays Green, Not Red

Weekend Box Office: Hollywood Stays Green, Not Red

Despite some stiff competition, ‘The Lorax’ held off every other opener with a second #1 weekend at $39.1 million, which brings its ten-day total to $121.9 million. Too bad Dr. Seuss isn’t around to see everyone making boatloads of money off him.

Now Playing: De Niro’s Best Work in Years

Now Playing: De Niro’s Best Work in Years

Even though we never once seen him pick up a pen, Robert De Niro’s possibly crazy character in ‘Being Flynn’ is always talking about a book he’s writing – not just any book, but a masterpiece. As I sat watching the movie, I realized that ‘Being Flynn’ functions on the same high level as a book. I haven’t read the memoir upon which the movie is based, ‘Another Bullshit Night in Suck City’, but if the storytelling is at all like the film, then it’s got “masterpiece” written all over it. Weekend Movies: A Summer Blockbuster Arrives Early

Weekend Movies: A Summer Blockbuster Arrives Early

Big and expensive blockbusters opening in March scare me. You never know if you’re going to get something awesome like ‘300‘ or a wretched waste of time like ‘Watchmen‘. (Yes, it’s by coincidence that both are Zack Snyder movies.) This weekend, Disney’s $250 million popcorn flick is about to be put to the test. Oh, and Eddie Murphy has another stupid comedy out too.

Now Playing: A Realistic Adult Romantic Comedy

Now Playing: A Realistic Adult Romantic Comedy

If you go into ‘Friends with Kids’ expecting to see a comedy in the vein of ‘Bridesmaids‘ (which is what the ads make it out to be), you’ll probably be disappointed. ‘Friends with Kids’ is actually a dramatic romantic comedy (or a “drom-com,” if you will) grounded in reality, not some fairytale perfectly wrapped with a pink ribbon like the majority of the chick flicks out there.

Now Playing: Disney’s Mixed Bag of Interplanetary Goodies

Now Playing: Disney’s Mixed Bag of Interplanetary Goodies

It’s difficult to explain how awesome ‘John Carter’ is, but it’s even harder to get others amped up to see the movie. I blame the marketing. No trailer or television spot does anything positive for the film. There’s nothing enticing in the advertising campaign, which makes the movie look like a CG-laden cook cutter space Western, or worse, a remake of ‘Attack of the Clones’. But I promise that if you make the leap of faith and give the movie a shot, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Weekend Box Office: Eco-Friendly ‘Lorax’ Cleans Up

Weekend Box Office: Eco-Friendly ‘Lorax’ Cleans Up

If anyone had told me in advance that a heavy-handed animated flick about deforestation and evil greedy corporations would open to more than $70 million, I would have called them a fool. There’s no way that such a movie could do that well, or so I thought.

Now Playing: The Worst Found-Footage Movie of All Time

Now Playing: The Worst Found-Footage Movie of All Time

By now, I’ve made my opinions on the found-footage genre more than clear. As much as I loathe these movies, I haven’t hated one as much as ‘Project X’ until now, and I doubt that any future release will ever top this as the worst found-footage movie of all time.

Now Playing: A Cartoon That Actually Validates One of Fox News’ Wild Claims

Now Playing: A Cartoon That Actually Validates One of Fox News’ Wild Claims

On my Facebook profile page, in the section that asks for political preferences, mine says, “Who cares? What movie is opening this weekend?” When it comes time to vote, that’s when I pay attention to politics… but that’s it. Working full-time in entertainment, I don’t have time to follow every slanted news story out there. However, the two things occasionally cross paths and I have to pay attention. Such is the case with ‘The Lorax’. Lou Dobbs has called the film anti-industrial Leftist propaganda. I don’t care about the Leftist aspect of his comment, but the anti-industry bit is 100% spot-on.

Weekend Movies: Two of the Worst Films of Their Genres

Weekend Movies: Two of the Worst Films of Their Genres

Both of this week’s big openers fail at doing what they’re meant to do. The animated family flick is chock full of less-than-entertaining content and the R-rated comedy isn’t funny in the slightest. Mark this up as another weekend to catch up on the Oscar winners.
