Poll: What Did You Think of ‘The Avengers’?

Poll: What Did You Think of ‘The Avengers’?

Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ has, officially, had the biggest opening weekend of all time. Odds are, if you had any interest in seeing the movie, you probably did so already. So, tell us what you thought of it in our poll.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Avengers’ Crush Opening Weekend Record

Weekend Box Office: ‘Avengers’ Crush Opening Weekend Record

There was no doubt that Marvel’s superhero team-up movie would open very strong, but I don’t think that anyone predicted it to shatter the previous $169 million opening weekend record set by ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2‘ by more than $30 million. Sure, the movie has been performing very well overseas for the last two weeks, but a $200 million opening still seemed unimaginable.

Weekend Movies: ‘The Avengers’ and a Bunch of Little Movies That Aren’t ‘The Avengers’

Weekend Movies: ‘The Avengers’ and a Bunch of Little Movies That Aren’t ‘The Avengers’

I’ve heard many people, geeks and non-geeks alike, compare this weekend to being a child on Christmas Eve. Because of the insanely huge hype behind this weekend’s single nationwide opener, only five small indie movies dare open against it.

Now Playing: Marvel’s Most Fun Movie Yet

Now Playing: Marvel’s Most Fun Movie Yet

I’m not a comic book geek and I really don’t know anything about the Avengers beyond what’s been brought to the big screen so far. With that in mind, know that I am absolutely in love with ‘The Avengers’. It’s not perfect, but it’s a perfect summer blockbuster, one that raises the bar so high that I really only see one other movie matching or surpassing it by fall. Based on the reaction by the geek audience I watched the movie with, I assume that (geek or not) everyone will love this movie.

Weekend Box Office: International Audiences “Assemble,” Domestic Fall Flat

Weekend Box Office: International Audiences “Assemble,” Domestic Fall Flat

What a sad weekend for the domestic box office. The domestic reports are embarrassing compared to the international reports, which praise the overseas opening success of ‘The Avengers’. In only 39 markets (which don’t even include major players China, Russia or Japan), ‘The Avengers’ brought in an amazing $178.4 million, sinking ‘Battleship’ in all markets where the two went head-to-head. What happened stateside? Not much. The movie predicted to finish in the #1 spot with $22.5 million actually finished in fifth with only $11.1 million.

Now Playing: Another Fantastic Segel/Stoller Collaboration

Now Playing: Another Fantastic Segel/Stoller Collaboration

Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller are maturing and it really shows in their latest flick, ‘The Five-Year Engagement’. Picking up right where the average rom-com would end – after the struggling couple ends up together – their new film shows what happens between the proposal and the wedding, and depicts all of the crap that a couple must wade through before getting to the “happily ever after.”

Now Playing: The Facts in the Case of J. Cusack

Now Playing: The Facts in the Case of J. Cusack

While Edgar Allan Poe may be a well-known American poet and author, I’ll be the first to admit that a movie about him doesn’t sound all that appealing. But if the screenplay has sensationalized his life, moving him from author to character in one of his own blood-drenched stories, then it might be worth watching. Make it a murder mystery blend of ‘Se7en‘ and ‘Sherlock Holmes‘, add John Cusack and ‘V for Vendetta‘ director James McTeigue, and it’s something worth checking out.

Weekend Movies: Biding Time Until ‘The Avengers’

Weekend Movies: Biding Time Until ‘The Avengers’

Although I enjoyed two of the major movies opening this week, I’ve got to be honest that next weekend’s release of ‘The Avengers’ is causing so much anticipation that (almost) nothing could get me excited for what’s hitting the big screen today.

Weekend Box Office: From Chimpan-A to Steve Harvey

Weekend Box Office: From Chimpan-A to Steve Harvey

Although ‘The Hunger Games’ finally got muscled out of the #1 spot on, this, its fifth weekend of release, the film managed to only drop another 31%. Coming in at third, ‘The Hunger Games’ has now made $356 million domestically.

Now Playing: A Nature Doc Worth Going Bananas For

Now Playing: A Nature Doc Worth Going Bananas For

DisneyNature’s releases have been hit-and-miss for me. I couldn’t make the press screening of ‘Earth‘, so imagine how pissed I was when I paid to see it and realized that it was nothing more than an extended episode of the first hour of ‘Planet Earth‘, which I already owned. The following year, I was disappointed by ‘Oceans‘ because it showed cool images but featured a voice-over that revealed nothing about what was on screen. ‘African Cats‘ wasn’t anything special either, but ‘Chimpanzee’ has finally won me over.
