Weekend Box Office: ‘Jackass 3D’ Punches the Box Office in the Crotch

Weekend Box Office: ‘Jackass 3D’ Punches the Box Office in the Crotch

Huh. Maybe this is America’s anti-intellectual tendency rearing its head. After two weekends of David Fincher’s rapid-fire, whip-smart ‘Social Network’ reigning over the box office, the jackasses have now made their mark. ‘Jackass 3D,’ the third entry in the venerable franchise in which Johnny Knoxville and a bunch of other human crash test dummies degrade themselves to varying degrees of potential danger, won this week. And it won big. B-I-G. To learn just how big (and to see how other movies fared this weekend), read on!

Apparently, Every Movie Does Need to Be 3-D Now

Apparently, Every Movie Does Need to Be 3-D Now

Do you remember how I was saying just last week that Warner Bros. had cancelled plans to convert the upcoming ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1′ into 3-D for its theatrical release this November? I applauded the decision, because I’m bothered by the current trend toward foisting 3-D onto movies never intended for the format. Well, I should have guessed what would happen next. That’s right, now Warner has announced that it’s converting the earlier ‘Harry Potter’ movies to 3-D. Isn’t that just great?

Weekend Movies: Three Dimensions of Dumb-Assery

Weekend Movies: Three Dimensions of Dumb-Assery

The weekend’s big ticket movie choices basically boil down to two options: the three-dimensional silliness of Johnny Knoxville and company’s ‘Jackass 3D’ or the geriatric spy thriller ‘RED.’ That, or you could hunker down someplace that’s playing Oliver Assayas’ 5 ½ hour-long terrorist biography ‘Carlos.’ (It should be noted that you can see ‘Carlos’ in a truncated 2 ½ hour edition, but that’s frowned upon – by me.) There are some other things out there too, but none are all that inspiring. Read on for full details.

Who Needs ‘Star Wars’ in 3-D?

Who Needs ‘Star Wars’ in 3-D?

By now, I’m sure that everyone has heard the news that George Lucas intends to convert all six of his ‘Star Wars’ movies to 3-D and re-release them to theaters one per year, staring in 2011. Is anyone actually excited for this? Certainly not me. I’m much more amused by this decidedly 2-D recreation of the original trilogy in paper animation. Seriously, check this out. (Embedded video has been fixed. Sorry about that.)

Mid-Week Poll: Are You Interested in 3-D?

Mid-Week Poll: Are You Interested in 3-D?

3-D is certainly the hottest topic in cinema and home theater these days. Nonetheless, it’s also one of the most divisive. Some people love it, while others can’t stand it. Where do you fall?

Turns Out Not Every Movie Needs to Be 3-D After All

Turns Out Not Every Movie Needs to Be 3-D After All

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. made the rather bold announcement that the studio intended to present all of its future “tentpole” movies in 3-D. While some of these films would be native 3-D productions, a good number would be converted to 3-D in post-production. Shortly after this announcement, the studio’s ‘Clash of the Titans‘ remake premiered to widespread criticism about the quality of its 3-D conversion. Now, in another setback, Warner has announced that plans for a 3-D release of the next ‘Harry Potter’ sequel have been scrapped.

Weekend Box Office: Guess Some People Sat Through ‘Resident Evil’

Weekend Box Office: Guess Some People Sat Through ‘Resident Evil’

I may have walked out of ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife,’ but that doesn’t mean everybody did. It was the only major studio movie this weekend and it locked down 2,000 of the country’s 3,203 3-D screens. That’s more about math than any sort of groundswell of popular opinion. I’m betting that Sony went out of the way to get all those screens because the studio knew that this was going to be a one-weekend warrior, without much in the way of staying power. Although, with the largest opening for the franchise ever ($28 million domestically and performing well overseas), we probably haven’t seen the last ‘Resident Evil’ entry. The franchise will be as undead as the zombies that populate it.

Now Playing: Why I Walked Out of ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’

Now Playing: Why I Walked Out of ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’

So this isn’t technically a review, because I didn’t watch the whole movie. I’ll say that I watched about forty minutes of the new, oh-no-zombies-all-over-the-place sci-fi/horror yarn ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ before bailing. It was a late showing on Friday night, I was not in the mood, and I knew there was a whole stack of unread issues of ‘Scalped’ waiting for me at home. That said, I wanted to explain myself, to tell you all why, in such a short amount of time, I was so reviled that I kicked off my 3-D glasses in disgust and stomped out of the theater. Actually, that’s not true, I gingerly placed my 3-D glasses in the recycling bins provided. But the disgust part is legit.

Weekend Movies: ‘Resident’ In

Weekend Movies: ‘Resident’ In

So this is the lull between the blockbuster summer and the more prestigious fall. Whew. Times are tough. There is basically only one major new release this week, and it’s one that almost all of us could do without. (I didn’t get a chance to see it early because I had other things to do and, oh yeah, it looks terrible.) There aren’t even that many intriguing independents to seek out. Instead, you’ll just have to resign yourself to either not going to the movies, or maybe seeing ‘Inception‘ one last time before the home video release. That works too.

5 Reasons Why ‘Piranha 3D’ Sank

5 Reasons Why ‘Piranha 3D’ Sank

By now it’s clear: I thought ‘Piranha 3D‘ was pretty great. And I’m pretty sure it’s not the heat stroke talking. I saw the movie twice this weekend, and both times the theater (the largest one at my local bijou) was at least half-empty, if not more. I tried to figure out why exactly this movie, which should be delighting audiences from coast to coast, didn’t connect with audiences. It barely made any money at the box office, and I heard some scuttlebutt last night that it might not have even made enough to stick that #5 placing. So, in the interest of scientific exploration and aimless speculation, I present to you five reasons why people aren’t jumping in for ‘Piranha 3D.’ To quote ‘Lost’ co-creator Damon Lindelof’s recent Tweet: “Am I seeing Piranha 3D tonight? Yes. Will I need to see it again immediately afterwards to determine whether it was a dream? Again, yes.”
