Stake your claim in an untamed universe.
The first big patch for 'No Man's Sky' is here, and developer Hello Games broke down all of the major additions to the game in a new video introducing the so-called Foundation Update.
Perhaps the most substantive change is the addition of base-building. Players will be able to claim a planet as their home and begin constructing their own base on their new turf. Players can customize their base using a fluid-looking interface shown off in the video, easily adding hallways and new rooms. In their base, players can store resources, grow crops, and recruit aliens to serve as specialists for farming, engineering, weapons, and science. Players can teleport to and from their base using teleporters at space stations.
Players with full pockets can also purchase expensive freighters that can be summoned from anywhere. These freighters seem to operate like mobile bases and can be customized in much the same way.
The Foundation Update also separates the game into three different game modes. The Normal game mode is what players have been playing up to this point. Creative mode takes some of the danger out of the game to encourage players to explore and build more, while Survival mode does the opposite, turning the game into a struggle for players who want a challenge.
A collection of quality-of-life changes are included in the update, many of which focus on the game's lack of inventory space, a source of many community complaints. In addition to being able to teleport goods to their freighters, players will be able to stack five instances of the same item in one inventory slot, increasing the effective space in their digital backpack.
The Foundation Update also adds new resources and technologies, graphical updates, and plenty of small fixes. A full list of changes can be found on the developer's website. You can also check out the Foundation Update video below.
