Even brand new players can play him for free.
On Monday, 'Street Fighter V' (review here), received its most significant update to date, and as a result, I was able to get sucked into the Training mode. While I think it could use a few more tweaks, the Training mode is no joke. It's also pretty tough for imprecise player like myself. Of course, Challenges is just one of Monday's changes, which in all are just the first half of the March update. The second half hits today and with it comes the first DLC character, Alex, and the shop, which means lots of new costumes.
One thing that won't debut is the real money-based Zenny, which means that Alex and costumes need to be bought with Fight Money. Fortunately, for anyone who doesn't have the Fight Money for Alex, he can be played for free on a trial basis, and that trial will last until the Zenny shop launches.
Also, Capcom is giving all players Ryu and Chun-Li's story mode costumes for free. (Be sure to download them this week.)
As for season pass owners, they will be the only ones able to access premium costumes for now (pre-Zenny). Likewise, season pass owners will also be getting a new, free stage at some point "in the near future."
From Capcom, here's a breakdown of the two day March Update features:
