Former Wii U exclusive getting new platforms.
Back in 2012, 'ZombiU' debuted alongside the Wii U, and the permadeath, zombie-filled fight for London struck a chord with gamers. Unfortunately, long, frequent loading screens, and progress-breaking bugs held the game back from becoming a true Wii U standout.
On August 18th, and updated an re-tooled version, dubbed 'ZOMBI' will be released digitally for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. This version features some important technical improvements and changes, but the key is how the team has managed to make the game without the second screen.
There will still be permadeath, and players will need to hunt down their former (now zombie) selves to recapture their inventories. Instead of looking at a second screen for getting out items, the map, and such, the game will be a HUD minimal experience that will be somewhat obscured when accessing items.
We knew from the beginning that maintaining the tension and feel of the original was one of the main challenges, as the way ZombiU was presented on Wii U cannot be reproduced. We maintain a minimal HUD as much as possible. It disappears when not required, giving the game a very lonely feeling. If you have surround sound, the awesome sound mix from the original still stands and greatly helps immersion. As much as possible, we’ve tried to keep those key elements.
Also, there has been a slight increase in the field of view, and players can increase and decrease it a little if they want to, but not so much that it takes away that claustrophobic feeling. Some work was also undertaken on the control mapping and response to improve the look and feel of the first-person movement.
We kept the central idea that you’re always vulnerable. Rummaging in the backpack still doesn’t pause the game. We’ve added a dedicated button to access the backpack, which lets players see their full inventory and assign shortcut keys.
