Nearly half of sales coming from the Americas.
Nintendo has announced that their Squid-based 4v4 online Wii U shooter, 'Splatoon' has surpassed 1 million copies sold. This number comes less than a month out from launch.
From Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America President and COO, "Ever since Splatoon launched on May 29 in the United States, we’ve seen thousands of people go online to have fun in this colorful, chaotic competition. This milestone puts us in a nice position as we prepare to launch 11 more exclusive Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games before the end of the year, plus amiibo, digital offerings and games from our third-party partners."
Included along with the sales mark is a regional breakdown provided by Nintendo's internal tracking. 476,000+ digital and physical copies were sold in the Americas, with 368,000+ being sold in Japan, 230,000+ being sold in Europe, and 20,000+ being sold in Australia and New Zealand.
Naturally, quick sales on the Wii U is always significant, but 'Splatoon' is a new IP, and it's a title that when first announced by Nintendo, lead to more head-scratching than preorders. Considering the shelf life on Nintendo produced titles, 'Splatoon' should be a in a good position to build off this initial success.
