It's going to take both systems, two SD cards, a PC, wi-fi internet, and a Phillips screwdriver.
This weeks, fans in North America will finally have their own New 3DS XL with which to cherish, especially for those that nabbed the 'The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3DS XL.' What may have been lost amid all the onrushing to order new systems and new AC adapters is just how does a current 3DS owner get all of their games and saves onto that New 3DS XL?
The answer? Well it's not as easy as most users would prefer. The most key requirement is that both the new and the old system are required for the transfer. Once the transfer is complete the old system will be reformatted, so yes, this is indeed a one-way trip. Likewise, it's important that users don't create new Nintendo IDs on the new systems. Also tricky for some will be getting their SD data onto the new system. Not only will they need a 0 size Phillips screwdriver to access the microSD slot, but the new card needs to be at least equal in size to the old card, which might be an issue since the New 3DS XL includes a 4GB microSD. The system data is transferred using both systems while SD to microSD transfers are done on the PC.
Fortunately, Nintendo has a step-by-step video of the transfer process, which should help users through what seems like an overly complicated process.
