Dates for AGDQ 2017 also announced.
As the last player crossed the finish line in an unscheduled four-player race of 'Super Mario 64,' Summer Games Done Quick 2016 came to a close, having raised a total of $1,298,239.44 for the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders.
More than 30,000 donations in total were received from viewers streaming the week-long speedrunning marathon. Well over 100 games were run in total, from classic 8-bit titles to modern-day hits. The bonus race of the classic Nintendo 64 platformer was an impromptu reward for surpassing the fundraising total of last year's SGDQ. If you missed a run you were looking forward to—or if you missed the event entirely and are interested to see what goes on in this biannual marathon—Games Done Quick is in the process uploading the runs onto its YouTube channel.
The next week of mad dashes and charity fundraising will be during Awesome Games Done Quick 2017, which the organization announced will be from January 8–15, 2017.
